Try finding the crappies and setting the tip ups on the outside edge of the schools. The last northern I cut up had 5 crappies in his belly.

where on medicne is a solid gill spot? I've caught lots of crappies but have not had much to any luck with sunnies out there. Its so close to my house I'd rather go there then drive to Tonka any day.

Find some weeds in shallower water and you will do good.

I have had some schools of them come through and interrupt my crappie fishing occasionally too. But it seems that they are more unpredictable in the deeper water.

Belive it or not...we have been catching many nice gills in deep water. We have our permanent in 28 ft of water and we are catching both crappie and gills. If you have a flasher watch the schools come in and use something small. Get rid of your bobber and feel the gills nibble and set hook immediatly. I have been jigging a tiny ( very very small) white tear drop with 2 waxies and getting 3-4 nice gills every outing.(throwing back 10-15 smaller) The larger crappies are hitting a plain hook better than anything (5 ft off the bottom last night) Jig your crappie minnow and let it sit for 1-2 minutes, if you don't get a bite..REPEAT. I hope you have some fun and remember to pick up your garbage... I have filled at least two trash bags this past 2 weeks with cans, wrappers, waxie containers, etc...and chewed out some college aged guys last Saturday for treating Medicine lake like a land fill. They got smart with me until I stepped out of my truck and showed them my 6 ft 8in frame and they backed off. Good Luck! -Average Outdoorsman

Hey guys thanks for the info. I think tomorrow afternoon I might hit it up and try a few different spots for some gills. I havent used minnows all year yet but sounds like I might have to!

Average have you caught many crappie on jigs lately? I also agree with you on the trash out there. I picked up a BAG of garbage on my way off the lake one night. I mean they took the time to put their [PoorWordUsage] in a bag and then left it out there. Stupid.

That made me smile smile I have picked up trash at the landing every time I have gone out there. I have barely had to buy propane because of all half empty bottles I have picked up. I guess you could say its a hidden bonus?

Anyway, I have had my best luck with the crappies during the day with a hali and a waxie but it seems like at night they only want a minnow. I have had some pretty good luck deeper for the sunnies but its hit or miss. Some days I will get into them and some I won't. The crappies have been pretty steady though. When I move up shallow it seems like the sunnies are a little more consistent.

I will be out there tonight and see what the evening bite is like.

Boilerup, I had had great success tonight 7pm-10pm with a Frosty tipped with a small crappie minnow (through the head) or just the head. Once again they were about 4-5 feet off the bottom. slighhtly jig it and let it sit...drop it about 6 inches and let it sit..REPEAT. You should get a bite every 5-10 minutes. Pretty steady and fun! My buddy was still catching them on a plain hook, but I out fished him 2 to 1 tonight with my trebble hook on the yellow Frosty. Things seem to change daily out there. I will say this though.....I have been experimenting with the whole "bringing the fish up to fast" and I have found that when I bring them up slow they do swim away easier. My buddy always horses them up and he ends up bringing 3-4 for home every night due to the "air-sac". They just don't seem to every recover from that quick change in pressure. Good Luck and thanks for keeping our lakes clean everyone!

On Sunday I caught at least 4 of my crappies on a a jig with a crappie minnow and a bobber. Everything else came on a waxie and my spring bobber rod but it was fun to set the hook with the bobber under the water. Not real aggressive bites but a bit under the water and movin around the hole with the typical crappie "pops" down a couple of inches--missed a few times as well. Those minnow fish tend to be bigger so I'm always glad to see some action on that rod.

Interestingly, I've also caught a couple of real good bluegills suspended in the deep water the the crappies this year. Gets the adrenaline going when you get that extra fight out of one of them and you think you've caught a big crappie and just a slight disappointment when it turns out to be a gill.

Got out for awhile last night and caught probably thirty crappie. Two really nice keepers and a ton of the normal small guys. The big ones came jigging a tiny homemade jig and all the little ones on bigger baits like a small pimple and a jiggin rap. Very finicky bite. Brought five home so not a wash at all.

FMers: Heading out to Medicine in a few for some piking and sunnies until sunset. Forest green Ranger/topper, may or may not have a blue clam junior set up. Stop by and say hi if you'd like, will be out from Harty's moving around the south end and moving up the east side of the lake as it gets closer to dark.

KMR85 how did you do? I was at Hartys to pick up bait and was debating if I should go out on Medicine or not... ended up somewhere else, just curious if I made the right choice.

There were a lot of people out yesterday with the nice weather. I actually haven't set my fish house up in 2 or 3 weeks due to the warm weather. As for fishing, I didn't focus on gills too much cuz I got out later than I wanted. By the time 3pm rolled around I switched gears and picked up 3 little eyes and a bunch of perch.

Stepside ranger?

Were you out past the second village on the west side using a tip-up?

Correct, except for being on the west side.

Well, north side.

I Think I was right by you there on the end of that village in the Blue malibu

I was on the east side of the lake. I don't recall seeing a blue Malibu, but then again I was hole hopping and looking at the Marcum the whole time.

Thinking about going out on medicine for the first time with the future bro in law. We need to kill a few hours during the day and he lives pretty close so we are going to give it a try. Looking for any advice on the fish bite and lake travel. Can a guy get around decent with a pickup? Taking the portable with so we might be moving around a bit. It looks like sunnies and crappie are the primary targets out here. Is the daytime good for fishing or is a night bite? Thanks for any replies.

Have not been on the lake in a few days, due to my trip to Winnibigoshish. I did talk to my buddy and he was able to get to his house today with a chevy 4x4 truck. He said the bite was normal. Fish were 2-8 ft off the bottom. He was fishing in 30 fow and managed to bring in 11 crappies (small pimple with crappie minnows) in 2 hours of fishing this afternoon. Good luck!

There was a guy out plowing a road from the winter access on the southwest side of the lake toward the middle earlier tonight. I don't know where he was headed, but I'd bet it was one of the little towns that pops up over crappie holes.

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?
    • monstermoose78
Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
