Medicine Lake Fishing Reports

Was out on Medicine again to day for a few hours, set up in one of the deep holes, crappie were stacked on the flasher, was a little tougher getting them to bite again. Did manage to catch a few, nothing of any size really today but had a good time.

I agree with deadeye on the fish bite. I have my spots I frequent away from. The crowds and they aren't producing. I have a bunch of buddies coming up from Indiana this weekend and we will be hitting it hard. I guaranteed fish so medicine is always my go to lake. Advice for medicine is to get. Lake map and find 40' of water and you'll find fish. This was the advice given to me three years ago and it was good advice. Ps if you can't find the holes just look around. wink

I just checked the Harty's webcam & this is the last image of the day. Looks like someone caught a nice pike!

I noticed yesterday afternoon on Harty's web cam that there are a couple cones at the entrance to Medicine that were not there in the morning when I went on and off the lake. Anyone know what's going on? Is it just a deep puddle? I saw quite a few vehicles going on and off OK just by going one side or the other. I plan on going out with a friend on Monday morning.

To answer your question (given the forcasted temperatures): Yes, I think I am crazy!! It should be a good test for my CanvasCraft insulated portable though. I've been out when it was just a couple degrees below zero and I fished in shirtsleeves with the Portable Buddy set on high.

I got kicked off the lake today because of the wind. Had all the ice anchors in and then the roof kept popping in. Guess I can't complain too much cause I heard some of the gusts were well over 50mph. Shouldn't have even went out but hey, I tried LOL. Fish were there but it was just too much for a pop up. Next time I am taking the cinder block house out.

Any new reports out there? Tried sunday, 4 decent crappie during the day in deep water. Tried for walleye later with nothing. Wonder where they are?

How's the ice out there? Are there any areas of the lake that I should avoid driving? Never been out on Medicine.

There are some springs to watch out for, Stop in at Harty's bait shop and talk to Joe, he is a great guy and will help you out.

Does anybody know what the water clarity is like this year? I would like to come down and spear since my grandpa just lives by French park and has enjoyed watching me spear there before, reason I ask is one of the lakes by me that's normally crystal clear you can't see down 2 feet, I would hate to drive down all that way to find out the lake is dirty. I would assume there's plenty of ice to drive a 3/4 ton gas out, I've had it out on 14" this year.

Thanks

Dooley

My buddy and I are planning on trying to get some pike before the season closes. Anyone have any tips for medicine on that?

There's plenty of pike out there, try 8-12 ft near a steep break or suspended in deeper water. Hardy's bait is a good place to ask also. Also if u find the bait fish and small pannies the pike are there too, but you know that! GOOD LUCK, and let me know how you do.

Fished out on Medicine tonight for a few hours 25 fow, bite was a little slow, did end up catching a few larger than normal crappie 9-10 inches, normally only catch the 6-8 inchers, threw everything back. Overall was slow.

Ya, anything over 9 is great it seems out there. Heading there sunday, try some eyes then crappie. I do good in 35 ft. for crappie but few over 9 inches ever. You would think there would be more over 10, is there growth stunted or what? I'll report back to let ya know how we did.

I may get out there Sunday a.m. too. If so, I'll report also. BTW, crappie size hasn't changed much since I fished there in the mid-seventies. Back then I accessed the lake by the Mission Farm and drove almost to the other end of the lake to a deep hole.

Did a little more fishing on Medicine again this afternoon. Action was pretty good at first but slowed down later in the afternoon for me. Fished in 20-25 fow again, the suspended fish would not really bite for me today. Did catch quite a few crappie coming of the bottom though. A lot of the dinks 5-8 inches. Did manage a few 9.5-10 inchers though so that was a nice change.

I was out there tonight until 9pm, hoped to possibly catch a walleye through the ice this year, but no luck there. I tried throwing a fathead on a dead stick right on the bottom, and jigged with the other pole.

Marks all over the graph. Stopped in at Harty's asked where my best bet to get a last change walleye would be, was told 18-24' near a hump.

That's what I did, I setup in 20fow at about 3pm, Setup on a hump near the road. If you passed a black malibu parked off the side of the road going to the west access, that was me. Didn't want to risk getting stuck.

I started out catching perch off the bottom, pretty decent sized perch for the metro, not worth keeping though. The perch moved out and I started catching crappies suspended about 10ft and deeper. Lots of lookers, even ones that would dart off the bottom and just freeze before getting to the lure. I caught probably a dozen or so small ones, kept a nice 10" and a 8" that didn't swim away. The graph was still lit up when I left, but they were just looking.

Oh, cool!

Yep, I think I needed to be on the other side of the hump, but someone was already over there and I was over dressed for the temps out there.

I was throwing just about everything in my tackle box at them. Changing up lure size, type, color, finish (metallic/painted/glow), bait (Minnow/head/eurolarve)

Unfortunately, this is the case. It could be the runoff of fertilizers, picking and choosing for many years or people not allowing growth. Sucks, but I find myself going there anyway. I like a good plowed lake.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.

My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
