Sugar Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

RR,

Thanks for the reply. The original destination last week was Maple but there were ten boats surrounding the landing and another 3 or 4 waiting to get in. Somebody was having a tourney, so we tried some new water.

Was out in the north bay today. 6 inches of good ice but slush on top of it. Drilled a hole and water came up out of the hole. It was hard work pulling a portable through all of the snow.

Ahh yes. Don't think I'll be gettin to my spot anytime soon with snow/slush we got. I walk it until we can drive, so a no-go for a while for me. If a guy can sled out the NE side, and hit the long narrow bar in the mid-lake, sit on the very NE end of it on top. About 15-16 feet, and a killer bite for the eyes when the water darkens. With all the snow cover, water is a little darker and prime time may be starting there as soon as the sun hits the lower angle, maybe an hour or 2 before the usual prime time. Great walleye spot though. I won't be there till later this year, but wish I could get there now.

What are the ice conditions like on Sugar? Snow, slush, rutted, or firm, how's it looking? I want to get out there but only have 2WD.

I was out there today. You shouldn't have any problems getting stuck. Very solid on top. About 15" of ice. I didn't fish I was looking for a place to put my perm. Decided to go to Maple. If you get out to fish sugar I would like to hear a recap.

We are going to head out on Wed. Never fished it so we are going to be very mobile. If you have any luck let me know.

We managed a couple walleyes in the morning Sunday. How did you do FishSystem?

Ended up fishing eyes on Clearwater S.E. Cold snap sure tightened them up some.

How was the travel out there? Did you use the north or south access?

I still haven't made it that way, I like a well-beaten path to get around with my 2WD.

North access. Decent trail going out, should be ok with 2WD. We hoofed it since I'm not too familiar with the ice conditions on the main lake throughout the winter.

Was out tonight, caught walleyes in 20'. Lots to look at out there. There was not much of a trail, only a couple tracks to follow. 18" of good ice. Im moving the perm there in the morning.

Anyone having any luck on Sugar lately?

I got out late one night south of the point this week and didnt mark a fish.

Is there much for houses/traffic on Sugar right now? Or is it pretty slow?

I drove by about a week ago, and there were 1/2 dozen to a dozen houses/portables out there. They were scattered pretty well throughout the lake.

Anybody having any luck? Depth? I was hoping to go out and try it, but don't really know the lake that well. Any info would be appreciated. wink

I wanted to hit Sugar for a Walleye bite, but since that officially closed 14 hours ago I guess I'll wait until next year.

Fished Sugar from 4:30 to 8:00 straight out from the North landing in front of the rushes in 13' of water. Caught one perch and didnt mark a fish the rest of the time. We were around a few other houses but didnt get a chance to see how they did.

Maybe things will pick up as we get further into March.

Good Luck.

Just my 2c but in the ten years of fishing it I've found sugar to be a good musky lake and thats it. Much better lakes in the area for the other fish a guy wants to chase.

Fished out there yesterday late afternoon/evening. Lost one 3lb or so northern in the hole to a snapped line and caught one blue gill. Fish were everywhere on the flasher but getting them to bite was another matter. Very tight lips.

Perhaps an AM bite? Drove by around 6:30 Sunday morning and there were a few trucks out there. Haven't fished that area in a few years but have done okay in the past... usually late ice. It's been feast or famine out there for me.

I been fishing out of the north access and have been doing really well with nice bluegills and med. size crappie. Key in on the weed beds in 8 feet or less and move a lot. Been upswing a regular tear drop with a pink Gulp waxie. The water has been clear enough to site fish if you like that. I've been using a camera a lot lots of fun.

Thinking about going out Sunday. Any tips on northerns? Are there muskies in Sugar?

Big Muskies in Sugar. Fish the humps with weeds on them.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
