Well the wife and kids took off yesterday to go visit her relatives, since I like her side of the family about as much as getting kicked in the seeds. I decided to go fishing went out to a small Wright county lake that hasn't exactly been good to me my last couple trips on it (1 open water 1 ice) But I figured I would give er a rip anyway since I know some larger Crappies reside there. Got out to the lake a little late at about 4:30 Got all my gear in the sled and headed onto the lake, was greeted by about 6-8" of snow with 4-6" slush underneath, no wonder I was the only one out there. My legs burned and I thought I was gonna die after the 1/4 mile or so hike to my spot. Went to set up the qf3 and that was a no go, one of the top poles snapped as the hub came out, cripes I've only used the thing 4 times now! So I figured I have went this far I am not going back right away. The first hole I drilled turned out to be the only one I needed last night, as soon as I dropped the showdown down there was fished stacked from the 28' bottom all the way up to 19' or so. I dropped a 1/16 Forage minnow spoon down just to guage mood and after about 6 seconds down there I had my first fish a 7" or so crappie, thought well this should be good, but not exactly didn't get another fish for over an hour, they were always there just not willing to bite. I was alternating lures between the Northland bloodworm on a 1/48 oz head in pink, A 1/12oz JR's stop sign in pink squirrel, and the red forage minnow. The bloodworm and the UV Coated stop sign with a minnow head took most of my fish. Most fish would come in at the 20' mark and need to be worked up as high as 15' most of the time multiple fish would come up and look and if you couldn't seperate one out and get him to work a little for it you weren't going to get bit. The exception to this was the bigger fish I caught, 5 bigger than the average 8-10"ers slammed the JR's stop sign as soon as I started my lift from 20' there was no finessing these bigger slobs, one even required minor surgery to remove the jigging spoon from the roof of the mouth deep in. All totalled I ended the night with around 20 fish, 5 nice ones of around 12" and the rest anywhere from 7-10" all fish were released. It was kinda nice sitting on a bucket out side, listening to the yotes, watching falling stars, and just taking in the surroundings, Never once felt cold in my Carrharts, and even my feet stayed warm despite being in frozen water the whole time.

Thanks for the story --- glad your efforts paid off and you were able to enjoy a little fishing, even if it had to be the "old school" way on a bucket .. I'm sure you appreciated the time spent that much more.

Good for you, not giving up. I have drug my house that far and had stuff just not work out and stayed. I have seen a lot of folks just turn around and leave. And in the end you did ok out there. Again, good for you.

I chalked it up to a pretty good evening, never got cold, caught some fish, and got to enjoy a beautiful peaceful evening, listening to yotes and just relaxing in the cool air. Hopefully Eskimo and Joe's stand behind there product, which I have no doubt they will.

It did bring back many memories though, thats how we always used to do it, minus the power auger and the showdown I was reliving my youth and really enjoyed it!

If you're referencing a certain sporting goods store in the area and their reputation....I agree.

Great story, sounds like a blast, minus the equip malfunction. How do you like the showdown? In my opinion it out-fishes the flashers anyday.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
