St. Louis River Fishing Reports

Ya it was you Grant. Call me Im headed out this afternoon maybe we can get 2 birds with 1 stone?

Tried a way out of the way spot tonight and it payed off big time. 18 fish with the biggest being 24". Caught almost every fish that came in. Only 2 on the deadstick tonight. Same old Lindy Rainbow flyer continues to work its magic. The glow orange buckshot worked after dark.

Please folks spread out. I had a spot I was fishing with a few buddies for a couple days. Last few times out someone has been fishing right on the spot. Thats fine but I know this person had to have seen me there, gps's the spot and now its the only place they fish. It dont take much effort to find spots away from others and you typically catch more fish away from others on "Fresh" spots like I did tonight. Ya you might shoot a blank every once in a while doing it but more often than not my best spots are found like this. Thats how we found the spot that so many folks are fishing now.

I have the next 2 days off so Ill be out the next 2 days fishing hard and checking out new spots. Maybe Ill see ya out there.

northlander-i completely agree. i love getting away from the cities out there and finding a spot that i can have all to myself. it is much more rewarding when you find a spot yourself by using maps and studying the breaks, humps, points, flats, and structure, rather then just parking right next to someone else and hoping they are on a good spot... a lot of fishermen are lazy these days, and have no problems just going out there with no research done and just shacking up right next to someone else.

Do you fish the spirit lake area of the river or is it only safe down by park point?

You can fish the Spirit Lake area yes but be careful there is a lot of current running in some areas up there.

we fished to the north of the access yesterday found a nice spot were the depth changed from 8' to 4' within 50 yards didn't get but one hit and i lost that one(drag loose).

Tried a spot near the one I fished last night. Biggest ones being 24 and 25". Still trying to hit 30" like Skipperskid did a while back. Congrats Tom!

Had a few real nice fish come in my cone but they werent slowing down for anything. Maybe sturgion.

When does the st. louis river's walleye season close? I'm guessing it's the same as MN regs?

it is not the same date as inland MN waters. it is actually one day later, March 1st

I have picked up on a trend guys. Yellow and Gold. Also fish only bite when they want to. Can you believe the nerve of these fish.

Yellow and gold are the color of the gobies or ruffies or whatever u wanna call them in which the walleyes fees on. It's the same thing on places like green bay where the walleyes feed on gobies gold is a good color.

Is anyone else out there just catching male walleyes right now. That is all I have caught the last week. Any input on this?

Yeah seems like some days all you get is thoes 17 to 19 inch males andthen the next week you will get some bigger females coming thru. Seems like the smaller males aren't affected by the wether as much and the females are more plentyful when we have more consistant weather. Just my thoughts.

Red, you can view a harbor navigational chart at http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/14975.shtml

but you can't copy them. Still, you'll get a good feel for where the humps and holes are located.

I also caught a sturgeon lastnight off parkpoint. First time....and man do them things fight!! WOW...it took me about 15 minutes to land it. It was about 3 1/2 ft long. Any ideas what a weight would be?

I have been reading posts for a while and been fishing the harbor for a couple of weeks. All the info has been really helpful. I need to find some structure to fish, I have been catching walleyes, but I have fish bigger in my home aquariums. Did catch a nice sturgeon a couple of weeks ago about 48 in.

There are some humps right off the boat landing out there in about 8 fow. Not a ton of structure but they do hold some fish.

This morning was fair with 8 fish caught. Tonight was a struggle on a new spot. 5 fish caught, saw a bunch but they werent active.

Thats what we had tonight too lots of fish graphed nothing hitting though, did catch one 45 inch sturgeon, my buddy was so excited as its the first fish he caught this winter, and he doesn't fish much what a thrill for him

MN DNR has a length/width/girth chart for estimating size. Do a search on their web page.

Is it safe to cross the channel from Barker's to Park Point yet either by wheeler or truck?

yes northlander andi did it the other day. its pretty rough where the ice cutter went thru the other day but we made it. There is no way a car could make it across. Im not sayin everywhere is safe to cross down there but you will see our tracks from where we went across and didnt fall in so at least that little section is good.

I will never say crossing the channel is "Safe" but I did do it once in my truck this week. Very bumpy so I wont do it again. A wheeler shouldnt have a problem but like I said I wont say its "Safe".

Some would say driving on the bay like we are is not safe.
