I'm new to the morgan park area. I have fished all over the northland, but the river is new to me. Anyone willing to share some tips on the river area around spirit lake? I just need a rough idea where to start. Its close to home and would like to get out there. Thanks

Good Luck Fishing

Try off of Boyscout landing until you know the river much better. I wont send you anyplace around spirit lake if you dont know the river. Lots of iffy ice in different areas and some may not be sfae.

I went out off of the boyscout for a couple hours today. The Ice was pretty thick. I would say 9" or so. I didn't have any luck but I am pretty new to the river still. There were a few other portables out there too. Not sure if they got anything but I did hear some excitement once from their direction. Is any of the harbor area ice safe yet? I would like to try some different areas but only if I know they are reasonably safe.

I have fished that area many many times but if your not familier with the river in the winter I would stay away until later on when we have more ice. Many a people have dropped threw in that area. Even walking there are spots in that river bend that arent safe.

Besides theres much better fishing in the harbor off Park Point right now.

I was out of Boyscout last night and got skunted. I talked to a few others and it was the same for them. The night before there was some caught. So sounds like the river is really hit and miss right now and probally more towards the slower end. Anyone been up to boulder?

I've heard everyone and their cousin has been up at boulder with mixed results. Seems like everywhere about now is about the same.

was out on the bay this morning. pretty slow. the CG is still cutting ice so be careful if you go near the channel. i had 8 to 10 inches of ice.

Ya be very careful when that cutter is still working. It can break the ice all the way to shore. Believe me I learned the hard way a few years back. eek

Wheresthefish I have been out on the bay several times. I like to get away from the crowds so usually will either snowmobile or walk out from areas away from others. Once everyone starts driving wheelers, sleds and later vehicles you have to get away from the crowds. Especially in that shallow water all that noise drives them out of that area.

Be careful going out off park point next couple of days. With the cutter busting the channel this morning and the strong east winds it was starting to crack and bust up some by shore next to park point. There were spots that were a foot to two feet wide that we had to cross to get off.

haha yeah that ice was rumbling this morning. Pretty cool to watch tho. After the cutter went thru this morning like OR said, there were a few cracks 4 to 5 inches wide near shore.

I went out tonight around spirit island. I had trouble finding deep water. I was in 3- 4 feet most the time. I did finally find 6 1/2 feet so I dropped anchor. It was so windy tonight. Well gl luck to everyone this Christmas season.

Merry Christmas Everyone

I didn't catch anything, but I need to scout around more and find a good 10 foot hole. I think I was close, when I came home and looked at map I couldn't of been to far off. Anyway I got all winter to figure it out. That is what makes this sport so fun is the hunt in a new spot.

Merry Christmas Everyone,,,, Safe driving

Saw one portable house out in the harbor tonight. Set up shop about 3/4 of the way to the channel. Heard the ice was moving like waves yesterday though.

went out this evening and had 12 inches of good ice. no snow or slush at all which was nice to see. Just dont venture to the duluth side if the rowing club. there was open water there over the weekend, it is iced up now but i bet it is only a inch or two thick.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
