Very nice crappie bite on Grand right now, caught and released 20+ fish from 3:00PM today until tonight (kept 5 in the 12 inch range). White glow jig with a waxie worked well during the daylight and a live minnow was best after dark. Good Luck.

15" in most places found 10" out from the access saturday measured with a tape. Fourty feet over had more probly close to that 15" mark. Be careful

Berens, did you move around a lot while on the fish, or just stick to one hole? Also, were the crappies suspended quite noticably off the bottom? Thinking about headin out friday afternoon....

Was out yesterday after four the bottom four feet had fish suspended all through it. Fish were very tight lipped would hardly follow the bait at times and when they did bite it was very subtle.

A purple or blue jig and the smallest minnows (or just a head) that I can find have been working better for me lately. I like to move around with the vexilar, find a suspended fish or two and drop it in on them. They seem to shoot right up and wack it if they are gonna take it. If I sit and jig them in it's been hard to get a hook in 'em.

For the most part I don't even fish a hole that doesn't have fish in it when I drop the vex.

Just got home from my first time out here. Ended up catching and keeping 6 crappies. 9 1/2 - 11 3/4in. Bite was slow and like what Berens said when they wanted the bait they hit it. Problem was finding the ones that would bite. Used minnow and red hook deadstick (one fish) rest on red glow buckshot spoon with minnow head. Was fishing 29fow. Also seen something at 15 feet at one time so i reeled up my buckshot spoon tipped with a minnnow and about a 24" northern slammed it on my ultra light rod. Fun getting it up to the hole. I Put him back. Here's a couple pics.

Got out after 2pm today. 15 sunnies, kept a little over half for a meal. 4 crappies 9-10 inches. 1 pike 3lbs. Was a lot of fun!

Taking the boy out early in the morning for some tip-up action and maybe try to get him his first walleye. I'm wondering if the ice is still driveable. I have a small crew cab 2WD. Also, I haven't been on Grand for a while. Are the northerns and walleyes in about the same areas you find them in the Summer? Thanks for any help!

      I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

      Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

      I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.

      Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
