Lake Sylvia-Twin Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been out to Sylvia yet? I am heading there tomorrow to pick up the snowmobile trailer and was just wondering if anybody has been fishing it yet.

Hit or miss on Sylvia in the winter? Strange. smile I can't wait to get out. I can't believe it is January and I have not fished it yet. Lets hope the fish will bite!

Fished the west lake all day yesterday. The bite was pretty slow during the day, but I was able to get a few nice crappies right before dark. I found the fish alot deeper than I normally do. It took alot of hole drilling to find them, but I had a good time.

I never made it out fishing this weekend. I was in bed with a nasty cold, but a few of my buddies made it out to Sylvia. They fished the west lake and had good luck with hammer handles. They said flags were flying left and right, but there was no size to them. They managed 1 crappie in 6 hours. Pretty slow fishing on the crappies.

New regulations for northern pike will go into effect in 2009: a 24-36 inch protected slot limit and three fish daily bag with only one over 36 inches allowed.

Like Noodlerod said, there are alot of Pike at the low end of the slot. Lots of 22-26 inchers. In 15 years of fishing this lake, I have gotten 2 over 36 inches. They are few and far apart.

It is to my understanding (via article in a popular outdoor news paper) that the same pike regs on Sylvia have not really done a thing for Mille Lacs to increase pike size ! Thats what leads me to believe the 2008 meetings about special regs proposed for Sylvia at the time was all about certian lake association members wanting to keep people off thier lake . In my OPINION If any reg should have went into affect it should have been the 5 crappie limit to keep some of the hogs from going into the spawning beds when the picking is so easy and taking livewell after livewell full of slabs but NO Mr. P D from the DNR said that doesent hurt the lake at all . Well look what it has done ( if you fish the lake religiously you know Exactly what I mean ) enough with my rant ! Sorry if Ive offended anyone not my intention just my opinion based on years of fishing Sylvia (east & west lake BNS) LOL sorry couldnt help myself BNS

noodle, comparing sylvia to mille lacs is like comparing a dandilion to an oak tree. They're trying to keep the nice size pike in mille lacs by putting in a slot. In lakes like Sylvia, they're trying to weed out the smaller pike so that the bigger pike can have a better chance to grow with less competetion for food.

I agree completely with noodlerod. Comparing lake sylvia to mille lacs may be a little farfetched, but what about the countless other lakes that have had this same regulation in effect for many years? Most of these lakes are still full of small pike. In all reality who wants to go out and catch a bunch of 15 inch pike? I have only fished lake sylvia 4 times all year, in 4 trips I have caught 23 slimeballs , and not a one was over 20 inches. I could care less if there were any pike in the lake. I haven't kept a pike in many years and am not gonna start anytime soon. as far as the crappies go, the best thing that could have happened was to lower the limit to 5. Noodlerod knows as well as I do, there are a certain few local guys who completely rape the crappies every year on late ice and after ice out.

I'll agree with your 1rst & 2nd sentance but your 3rd sentance tells me you obviously have no idea what your talking about . In the 2008 meetings on proposed new regs on Sylvia , Paul Detrich (spelling ?) who happens to be war eagles boss unless that has changed , explained something totally diff on why and what this reg on Sylvia would do for the lake ! He explained to make a long story short that it would make the over all population of pike larger thus evening out the population of all fish by getting rid (pike eating) the small fish thus making the lake come whole. not to ruffle your feathers but please check your facts first..

I second fishuhalik!

I think maybe its time for wareagle to add to this discussion!

You could add to the conversation too!

Look, I've been fishing Sylvia hard, both this year, and last year. And there has been a very noticable difference between the crappie production even from last year coming into this year. It has been on a steady decline for the past 3 or 4 years, both in size, and numbers. As it has been stated a couple times already, the DNR should have looked into doing something with the crappie limit, rather than trying to fix a problem with the pike. Most people don't give two s***'s about the pike on Sylvia anyway, and it's more of a problem that will need to correct on its own, not with the help of the DNR, being the Pike population is already as thick as hell.

So I agree with Noodle and Duckman. At least set a 5 fish limit for Spawn season, that's when they really get nailed in certain bays in the lake.

IMO drastic changes (up and down)in spring temps(during the crappie spawn)the last several years have resulted in relatively poor spawning conditions and subsequent poor year classes. I would say that we will be seeing poor panfish recruitment in general and notice it the next few years on many lakes.

Don't get me wrong, I am also in favor of a reduced limit on Sylvia, I just think there was interest from the DNR in reducing the crappie limit (wasn't that also a proposal at the meeting you were at)? It just didnt have enough support, correct me if I am wrong.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
