Sure thing. I'm getting anxious and by all the testing holes out there others made that special trip to test the ice also.

Just got back from Bayport. Two words fellas, "GAME ON." Didn't have the tape measure with me this time but there is at least 4 inches maybe 5-6 in some spots. Looks like someone already has a permanent out there too! Saw a guy walking way out towards the King Plant and another fishing the big basin directly across from the Bayport landing. Monday or Wednesday morning may be the day for me. Friday for sure. But as always, BE CAREFUL!

Wow! the ice is forming fast. Going to try to get out tomorrow good excuse not to watch the game. Not that I need an excuse to fish.

Its even 4 inches down by me with an exception of open water over the sand flats out from the YMCA

Be careful out there all. After thinking about that open water the wind today and the sun and warmer temps might have weakened spots.

I was out in the middle today directly out from the mallilou dam. It was a solid 4 1/2 inches. Jiggin for some walleyes. Got 2 decent perch.

Hopefully you know that area can change in a hurry even in mid winter be careful and take precautions lot of current there and if something happens its along way back to get warm keep that in mind, PLEASE!

I'm not scolding just saying it is a risky area anytime of the year.

Are people catching fish near Bayport???

I'm heading down there to check things out and maybe fish. I'll be the guy with floatation devices around both my arms while I'm checking to see if the fish are stacked up in 2 to 3 feet of water.

Jdog, I accessed right of that dirt road by the dam. And I definitely was trying to be carefull. The ice was real good though no air bubbles just solid. I was ice chiseling like a mad man! Even though the current is strong there, I was pretty amazed the ice was still uniformally thick. I would think where the current is less the ice is probably thicker. I would give it a green light, just be carefull and use your chisels!

Jedimaster WELCOME to FM. Looks like we are having great ice this year. Look foward to more post from you. If you see a blue 8x8 Northlander fold up out there stop on by.

Thanks croixflats, I appreciate that and will do. Once the ice gets thick enough for driving, I usually like to work my way from the Sunnyside marina area back through Bayport. So hopefully we'll see you out there.

Hope everyone has a safe and fantastic '09 and'10 ice fishing season this year.

So, were the fish stacked up in 2 to 3 ft of water. And did you fire up that new Nils for a test run. I will tell you this when your out on the water you will find yourself being able to pick out the other brands of augers on how they sound, being loud and all, and how long they take to drill a hole and you will say to yourself those poor souls I should probably go over and help drill the holes for them. grin

Hi Curt

No I didn't fire up the new Nil's power auger....I fired up my new 6" Nil's hand auger I bought yesterday at Cabela's. Believe it or not...this thing drills holes in about two seconds. I can't wait till it drills holes in 6 to 8 seconds.

Fishing was good and bad. I smoked the channel cats and white bass. I caught more cats in two hours then I have in two winters of fishing on the Croix. Largest was 23", smallest 16". Probably averaged around 19" to 20". Lots of white bass big and small.

Most of the crappies were in the 5" to 7" range, largest 11" three in the 10 to 10 1/2" range and only a couple in the 9" range. Never caught one fish on my set line, even though I had several bites on it. SM

Kept the four largest crappies. What I really wanted was a few 15" to 17" walleyes or saugers for the pan. It's been a long time since I had fresh walleye fillets in the cast iron pan. Last year I caught only 3 or 4 during walleye season. Most of the walleyes I caught were after the season was closed.

same here as far as catching them last year. I did regain faith in the river this spring and summer with all of the walleye and saugers I caught. With that being said, don't give up, they are in there. At the same time, I will keep nice crappies anyday. Good job out there and keep us posted.

thats great to hear regarding the lake levels!!!!!!

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year

I don't think its 100% accurate, you are just relying on other average joes to report precipitation. But I think most numbers there are right in the ball park, especially when you see consistency among multiple reports in a general area.   It's probably more accurate than what the weather terrorists say on the news  which usually only reports metro areas. cocorahs is good for getting rural area reports you just might not have as many reports to go off of

Thanks Mike.  I've been looking at bags of it for years but never wanted to chance wasting good meat on it.  I have a gas and charcoal grills, but really love the flavor of charcoal over gas. Most of the time it's if we have time to use one or the other.

On the south end...   The big open water, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  The bays and tributaries of LOW such as Zippel Bay, Bostic Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  The lake is in good shape for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. The many bays and backwaters of the lake have been receiving attention from spring pike anglers.  Some pike have already entered the bays, spawned and gone back out to the lake, but there are still a pile of fish to be had.   The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Another great week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  The bite has been very good and lots of fish of all sizes are being boated.     Sturgeon are being caught from Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River all the way to Birchdale, about 42 miles.  There are many boat ramps along the river to make life easy.  Starting from the east going west...   -Nelson Park at Birchdale (About 30 miles east of Baudette) -Frontier (9 miles west of Birchdale) -Vidas (Near Clementson Rapids) -Timbermill Park (East Baudette) -Peace Park (International Drive, Baudette) -Wheeler's Point (mouth of Rainy River)  The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice free.  Resorts are gearing up for the fishing opener which is expected to be excellent.  The late ice bite was very good and the walleyes are in good numbers amongst the islands area of the NW Angle.

Charcoal Briquettes are great for low and slow cooking as they produce long-lasting heat. Lump Charcoal burns hotter and adds more flavour to your food; therefore is great for hot and fast cooking.
