Really cool deer guys, is it November 3rd yet? Just kidding smalleyepike but I can see why you didn't miss, it was like shooting a steer smile If head mounting or whatever, you better reinforce the wall in your house !

Posted

no, I didn't green score him, his brow tines are seven inches, any guesses on his score?

Posted

I'd guess 130 to 135. Really depends on the mass. Very similar to my 10pt that scored 143.

Posted

145 gross. thats an impressive 8. awesome mass.

Before and after pics of my gun kill this season.

It was a pretty cool hunt. I was sitting all morning, and hadn't seen a single deer. Just busy watching squirrels. The wind was really howling into my face, and the leaf litter was soaked from rain the evening before. I decided to walk into the wind to see if I could catch a bedded deer on my way in for lunch. I was walking for maybe 100 yards when I had to cross a small gully. It took a little scramble, but I finally emerged on the upper lip on the opposite side. As soon as I stood up straight, I heard a deer crashing through the brush up the hill to the right. I looked up toward the sound and noticed it was a large doe, who stopped and looked back. I quickly scanned the area to see if any bucks were around her, being it was prime rut time. As I came back to focus on her, antlers wavered into my vision, I quickly bring my attention to close up, and here this buck stands up and looks up the hill at the doe, then does a long stretch to loosen up before following his love interest, completely oblivious to me standing 10 feet behind him! I quickly raised my gun and fired, whereupon he fell straight over backward, landing nearly at my feet with his antlers stuck into the steep hillside. What a rush! The slug entered just back of the foreleg, passed through both lungs, and was stopped just under the hide on the other side, after shattering the opposite shoulder. Of course all of the above transpired within about 3 seconds of me emerging from the gully. Close inspection revealed the two deer had been bedded within 5 feet of one another, but apparently the buck either was asleep or didn't see me from how he was positioned, while the doe reacted immediatly, storming up the hill.

Congratulations that is a very nice mature 8 pointer!

I think smalleye's buck grosses close to 150 easy. Carries its mass way out plus main beams are pretty long. G1s, 2s and 3s are long too. Great buck!

Congrats on a great buck! And maybe I'm way off base, but I don't think the trailcam pic is the same deer. Deer you killed looks waaaaay bigger. Maybe it's just the angle???

My 30 year-old Indy 500 (over 8,000 miles) has been having a mid-range bog for many years now.  It is worse on warm days and when the engine is warmer.  The sled runs fine up to about 1/4 throttle, then runs extremely rich up to 3/4 throttle.  The spark plugs are dark brown (better brown than down?) but not saturated.  8 years ago I moved the clips on the jet needles from the 3rd to the 2nd groove to lean the mixture and it helped for a while.   Should I move the clips to the top groove (temporary solution)? Could the jet needles, needle jets, and/or the main jets be warn and need replacement?   Don't think I will have time to tear the carbs apart this season for a rebuild so I may just band-aid the problem.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

I still have hope. Put me down for my dad's birthday in April 26. Come on warm weather.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

aw that date is fine and maybe someday we will have beer!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
