Nice buck Trigger!

I just scored him at 143 1/8 gross, 139 1/8 net. Pretty symmetrical buck. He will be going to the taxidermist. Thanks guys and gals for all the congrats.

OK, the story:

Took Friday off of work, it was getting to be crunch time. On Thursday my aunt and uncle took a drive around their farm and said that they saw a nice buck and doe bedded down in some of the long grass along the woods. I don't have a stand in that area but there is an old shack out there that basically has 3 out of 4 sides, but it would work as a makeshift blind in a pinch. Got out nice and early, hear a deer come through but its too dark. Sun comes up and I see a big bodied deer feeding in the field, grunt and he comes right in but its only a fork horn. About 8:30 it is way colder than I had planned on it being. I decide I have to get up and move around a bit, I am going to walk around to another stand and hopefully warm up on the way. On my way over I am walking a brushy fenceline when I see him on the otherside nose to the ground kind of just wandering. I try grunting him in, no dice. He either can't here me in the wind, or is completely ignoring me. I keep watching him and I see he is headed towards my other stand. I know exactly where he wants to cross the fence, its 30 yards from that other stand, which unfortunately I am 150 yards away from yet. I try and close the distance without getting busted and eventually lose sight of him. Longest 90 seconds of my life. Finally I see him 100 yards from me, and 30 yards from that stand. I put the cross hairs on him and fire, clean miss, but he runs up into the field about 80 yards, shoot again and see him stumble and run away. I have good blood and decide to wait an hour. Get my aunt and uncle and they come with and we make a bonehead mistake and kick it up. Can't get a good shot at him. We back out and I tell them that I am going to come back in 3 hours, with different gun with open sights. I go back and pick up the blood trail. Then I lose it. Stop, take a breath, slowly look for even the slightest spot of blood, finally pick it up again and he's bleeding pretty good. Make another mistake of keeping my eyes on the ground and not ahead of me. I see him as he's ready to bolt, 3 quick shots and he runs down the hill. I hit him again pretty good as he is now spraying blood, he ended up expiring at the bottom of a hill on the neighbors property with a final heart shot. I went and talked to the landowners and they were awesome. He and his wife came out with the 4 wheeler and helped load it and I had a great conversation with them. Great people to deal with. I'm grateful that I was able to recover it, it would have died from the first hit, which was just a little too far back, but it would have been a slow death. It was not a great display of marksmanship and I feel disappointed in myself for not waiting a little longer the first time going to look for him, but I honestly thought we would find him dead judging by the amount of bright red blood. But, he didn't go to waste and I met some nice people in the process.

I am taking my 4 year old son out tonight to see if we can't get a doe. Should be fun.

2011 Gun Deer

Posted

Well, getting off the beaten path continues to pay off smile

The deer population really seems to have taken a hit since last year where we hunt. I think the winter and wolves are taking their toll. Anyways, myself, my dad, and my uncle hunted Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of opening weekend and none of us even saw a deer, or even fresh sign. It was like they all disappeard. There were a few old scrapes, but no rubs in any areas I sat, or still hunted through. Tuesday was just my dad and I, and I finally saw a doe and a mid-sized 8 pointer from my stand. I could have had both, but decided to let them go. They were fun to watch, she didn't want anything to do with him, and he was just grunting away at her. Wednesday morning I went back to the same spot and sat until noon and decided I needed to change my location. I hate to go back to camp in the middle of the day, but decided to go back, eat lunch, and clean up a bit. After that I headed up to a new area and found a bit more buck sign. Threw up a stand where I could see a deer trail just inside of the woods, and also could see out into a swamp along the river we hunt. 45 minutes later this buck came through. I didn't get a good look at his rack, but could see his body was huge. I knew he was a mature deer and shot just before he went into a bunch of thick brush, dropping him in his tracks. 4 days later when we finally got out of the woods, he dressed out at 240 pounds! No wonder he was so hard to drag to the river myself! What a great hunt. 3rd year in a row we haven't seen a single other hunter. My dad went 8 days without seeing a single deer, but still loved the trip!

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

aw that date is fine and maybe someday we will have beer!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
