"Dewey from wadena is the man in charge of getting this dandy on the wall! He does EXCELLENT work".

Beautiful deer. Dewey will do justice to your mount. Show us his work when you get it back. He has done several fish for me and I personally have not seen better. Great artist. BC

I concur Big Country, I'd consider Dewey a friend of mine, known him for over 30 years, went to school with him and he does excellent work. A little tricky to find where he lives/works, there's a little minimum maintenance road that is just West of Wadena that comes out behind the motel/trackside bar that is at the 10 and 75 intersection, he's basically located on the north side of the min. maint. road. Another way to put it is he's located just NE behind Wensman Seed off HWY 10.

North Dakota does not have an early muzzleloader season. In fact, ND doesn't have a muzzleloader season for non-residents.

South Dakota I don't think has a muzzleloader season until December, and I think its residents only for antlered deer.

So, if it was a dakota deer, all I can think of is Indian Reservation or High Fence?

could be a special city hunt maybe i dont know. Personally i hate looking at the new south dakota fish and game site it doesnt have the kind of info it did before.

Mrklean,

I second that about the new SD web site. I do not like it and it is confusing. I am trying to get my application in for MZ hunting and it is not good.

unless i am looking at the wrong place but it doesn't even show you the season dates any place on there

The SD Season dates are listed under Hunting / Big Game/ (Link at the bottom) "Application forms, Season Dates and Deadlines are available here". This will list out the big game information and dates. Its a new site and I am just getting familiar with it as well. But there doesn't appear to be a season open now except youth, unless a reservation has one.

I am waiting for JohnnyB to respond-Kind of interesting...

Sorry guys, I haven’t logged in for awhile... The buck was taken on a res, and as I stated earlier; both states have opportunities for early season hunts... I don’t know anything about high-fence hunts; personally I wouldn’t find those very appealing.

This particular hunt I have been doing for several years now. It’s not for the indolent hunter that’s for sure; we put on between 10 and 15-miles per day, walking the creek bottoms and ravines chasing deer around. It’s truly a blast, but by no means is it an easy hunt!

Have you seen this buck and story?

that buck is huge! i have not heard about it. good luck.

Holy Moly! What is the story?

Posted

yea i saw that on a different website its from Canada i think.

How do you get in on hunts on reservations? Are they like special draws or something

Usually, with reservation hunts you just have to go with an outfitter and/or be willing to pay the price of the tags if they allow non-band members to hunt.

I'd be interested to know what reservation Johnny B hunted on and what the arrangements were for the hunt. There are certainly some nice parts of the dakota's (hunting wise) that are reservation land.

The story that I got with the monster muley was that it was arrowed in Canada. No location details beyond that. Long story short, it was in the same flax field five consecutive days with a reasonably easy stalk performed 3 times. First two stalks ended with buck standing up and walking straight away.

Gross non typical score - 259 1/8

Gross typical frame - 211 7/8

Net typical frame - 207

Total net non typical - 254 4/8

Here are a couple more pics. The story and pics I recvd are too long to paste everything into this post.

WOW... now that is a buck!!! Congrats to the hunter.

How much did that thing weigh after it was dressed out?! It looks like it has a horse's body!

I guess its from the Last Mountain Lake Area. Saskatchewan kicks out some mule deer like that every year. Its resident only for Mules there so you dont hear about them as often. Lots of 200+ inch typs as well.

Thats what happens when bucks get old! They get huge!

I would consider it a successful hunt just for having the opportunity to see something like that while out hunting. Really impressive. I would have to put an addition on the house just to hang him on the wall..
