There are plenty of tullibee in Miltona but haven't heard from anybody targeting them. The fishing pressure has really slowed since walleye season ended.

Maybe it's time to go out and search for some and get them in the smoker smile. How's the ice travel is there still a lot of snow on the lake for a truck to get around?

Posted

There is quite a bit of snow out there but trucks have been getting around on the lake still. Bring a shovel for sure! A snowmobile would be the best way. If you do go after some tulibees i'd love to hear how your trip went! Good luck.

Thanks for the update and definately post after next week. grin

Went out to Tamarack Bay and drilled several holes starting in 6-8 fow and working our way out to a breakline in 12-15 fow. We marked fish in every hole but only managed to pick up some smaller to medium sized perch. Any tips on locating some late ice Gills or Crappies? Ice measured 32 inches and seemed solid I'd like to get out one last time.

Any ice out guesses? I'd say May 2nd

Posted

I mentioned May 4th or 5th a couple of weeks ago. With no 50's forcasted in the next two weeks it should easily push into May on Miltona. There were still trucks on the ice early this week.

This weather is nuts. How much snow got dumped on you guys?

Posted

We got probably 6-8 in Alex

Posted

Picked up 8.5"in St. Cloud . 10 day forecast on my weather app says 51 deg a week from tomorrow. All this snow is going to hold air temps down yet for awhile. Long winter for sure, good for some hard water action late in the year though

With this weather and such I bet we will be lucky to have it off by opener maybe a day or two before... We took a tape to it and we still have 29 inches...

Anyone been out on the ice lately? How's the bite?

Posted

How is the ice looking on the big lakes like miltona, osakis, the chain, etc? I'm pretty confident that they will be out for opener, but does anyone have a report?

Posted

There isn't much separation at shore yet but the ice is definitely darkening and becoming more transparent. Cooler temps are forecasted for the next several days so i'm not sure how much melting will be going on. It will definitely be close to opener when it opens up.

Fishing has been great on Miltona lately. Large crappies & sunfish have been coming off the weeds using small jigs & plastics below a bobber. Good numbers of eyes have been caught on the weed edges in 12-18fow dragging leeches on spinners or vertical jigging. The larger walleyes have been caught in the evening while trolling crank baits. Don't be afraid to go up shallow at night. Bass fishing remains fairly well by pitching jigs or spinner baits along the weeds. Several larger bass have been caught in 15 fow along the weeds drifting with lindy rigs & a leech. Good luck!

Nice report. You caught any of those muskies yet?

Posted

Thank you. As a resort owner I don't get alot of time to get out and fish during the summer but come fall i'll be out chasing the muskies. For now I rely on reports from our guests and local guides.

Hi All,

What's it looking like on Miltona lately? Have a friend visiting the mighty state of Minnesota from Colorado for a few days and would like to show him some good fishin.

Thinking about coming out on L. Miltona this weekend but have never fished this late in the year on that lake and due to high fuel prices, I don't get out there more than once or twice a year (and haven't come out at all this year). If we do come out, we're thinking of fishing the late afternoon into the evening then get some sleep in town and fish again in the morning til about noon. I usually launch on the W. end of the lake by the campsite, but sometimes we'll launch from the public landing on the north end.

We would like to fish primarily for walleyes, but decent crappie and bass action would be next on the list as well. We don't target muskie because we'd much rather not try to handle one without proper gear.

Any tips, current conditions, depths, or ideas are much appreciated. Please PM me if you are kind enough to share some information, but would rather not post on the open forum.

Thanks!!

The walleye bite on Miltona has been excellent. Drifting or trolling spinners tipped with crawlers or leeches in 15-18fow has been the ticket. Try using silver or red spinners. Find the weed edges and you'll find fish. Bass can be caught easily by casting spinner baits or rattle traps in the bays in 8-10 fow. Sunnies & gills also have been picked up in these same areas using bobbers with small plastics or smaller leeches. Boating pressure has slowed some so it's a great time to be on the lake.

Have a family vacation coming up on Miltona and wondering if anyone can give me an updated fishing report? Any starting points would be great as well as I don't know the lake that well. Thanks

JP fishing still good, I am on the NE corner near the public access, that end of the lake has been good for panfish and walleye, smallies, LM, pike, Muskie.....VikingBay Guy's report still good....crawlers and leeches spinners, slip bobbers, stay on the edges, 12-22, walleye bite at 22-25 feet last hour of light, jig and a leeche or crawler, or lite pike minnow, also, trolling crankbaits at those depths will produce some nice fish......very good on the mid lake structures and shorline weedlines alike.....just a great time to be on the lake fishing wise, the sunsets are spectacular!!! Slip bobbering on the edge of the drop offs that last hour of light can't be beat, especially with a little chop and a leeche......enjoy your vacation on Miltona!!! Welcome!!!

Thank you for the starting point...I will take your advice and try the techniques that you described. Thanks for help...

Beautifully night on the lake tonight...didn't have much luck but a couple of smaller ones. Pulled worm harnesses over that 21ft-25ft area. Might need to try something different tomorrow. Any other suggestions for anyone as of late let me know.

It is nearing full moon so I would suggest going out after dark and pulling cranks in 6 to 10 ft adjacent to the deep water you are marking fish in during the day.

The walleye fishing has been pretty good as of late. My group has transitioned from leeches/crawlers to minnows. There appears to be plenty of natural bait in the lake - perch and lake shiners. Jig and minnow combinations have worked both early and late in the day. I've also found pulling cranks after dark to be productive.

It will be a few weeks before I make it back on the lake - Labor Day weekend will be spend on shore doing yard work.

Are seeing any muskies this year? I'm looking forward to some fall trolling, maybe see ya in october!

One day left of the family vacation and it has been fun. Miltona is a Great Lake to fish with lots of area and depths to choose from...I took the advice of the people on here and it has paid off. Was able to keep quite a few walleye and catch many other species along the way. Thank you for the fishing tips and advice...I am looking forward to returning to the lake next year with a better knowledge. Thanks again...

We've had a few guests pick up a couple muskies. Some were caught on accident while trolling for eyes in the weeds. With the heat wave we have going on right now I wouldn't expect to see many targeting muskies. I think mid September through October is going to be promising. I can't wait.

Heading up to Lake Irene with the family this weekend. Has anyone targeted walleyes (Miltona)in the past week? With the winds last weekend, I'm sure there was little fishing pressure on the big lakes.

Thanks in advance for your response...If I get on the water this weekend I'll be sure to post my results on Tuesday.

Have a safe Holiday!

Aaron

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.
