Bringing the wife and Kids up to Miltona this wknd. Looking for some tips on the Walleyes & panfish, not specific spots, just depth and technique for late August. Thanks for any tips!

Here here...

sounds like deep weed-edge will be the ticket until tunrover?

MNMuskie -- Going to be on Miltona next week. Any guidance to help me locate some fish would be appreciated. Send me a PM if you prefer.

Thanks

was up on the week before the full moon in august, boated a 40 and had 2 explode on topwaters but miss the bait. anyone been out for muskie recently?

Posted

I was out there last Sat morning and saw one lazy fish on the first spot at sunrise and that was it. The wind picked up and then never saw a fish after that. Kinda disappointing but it was post frontal.

Hey Y'all - anyone notice the water temps on Miltona lately?

Thx

Went out and braved the cold in the portable today. Fish were extremely aggressive. Only had couple doz shiners and handfull of crappie minnows, perch were so thick I ran out of crappie minnows right away, then tried shiners and they were still inhaling them. Decided to stop feeding them shiners and tried just plain jig, no bait, and they were still just hammering it. Once it slowed down I put a shiner back on and next four times down couldn't even get it to the bottom before a walleye would come up and smack it. Ended up catching 9 walleyes, missed a lot, and lost a giant fish I suspect was either a big northern or muskie. All in 18 fow. Now I just need to go buy more minnow.

were you by weeds or a drop off? how big of perch? headin up fri to sun. dont know much about the lake, besides its deep and full of structure.

I had set up a few yards in shallower in about 14fow. Looked down the hole and saw weeds and was full of small perch. Decided to move out just past the weed edge, but before it really started to drop to 40+fow. The perch ranged in size from small to mediocre keepers. The larger ones came on the shiners. Walleyes ranged from 10-15" but all released.

Get more of those minnows....LOL! Nice job.

Can anyone tell me what the snowmobile trails are like since the last snowfall. Are they grooming? Is there enough to ride?

Thanks

Fish on

We just had a large group of snowmobile-rs from Iowa and they said the trails were in good condition. They were up here for 4 days and had a blast. We are forecasted to receive 2-4 more inches of snow this evening which will only help the trails. They should be grooming mid-week.

I am trying to be in the area as well this weekend. Is there quite a bit of snow on the lake? Can you still drive out with the truck? Would prefer not to have to bring the sleds with but if there is enough snow the kids might want to buzz around the lake.

There is deeper snow along the east shore but most of the snow on the lake is crusted over and vehicles of all kinds are traveling on the lake. The sportmans access & sandy beach are easily accessible. Just be aware of some drifts on the lake when you're on the move and you'll be in good shape. Warmer temps could make the snow soften a bit by this weekend.

Thanks for the update. Like the last trip up the weather sounded great in the beginning of the week and then the 50 MPH winds showed up. This time sounds like a snow storm. A guy cant win for losing? I hope the eater perch are still biting because the wife and daughter are coming along this time.

Posted

Yea it appears a winter storm came out of nowhere. They are forecasting 6-8 inches possible starting Saturday night with high winds coming with it through Sunday. The perch were biting good last week with larger fish moving through hitting hard and then moving on. I would expect that bite to continue but the weather seems to be the only obstacle at this point. That's Minnesota! Good Luck out there & be safe.

Was up on Miltona Friday night and most of the day Saturday. Caught a couple small walleyes and about 150 small perch. I didn't bring home any fish. I am pretty sure the weekend storm must have killed the bite. Supposedly the wife had a nice walleye to the hole but i was busy drilling and didn't hear her yell. God forbid her reach in the hole and touch a fish sick.

Thanks for sharing. Yea that storm really shook things up. We had some guests that still did pretty well Saturday evening but all that snow is going to make travel a little more difficult. We hope to get a road out soon so we can get back on the fish! Better get the wife a glove for next time. wink

Viking Bay..or anyone around Miltona.. How much snow did we get there? Heading up to the cabin next week looking to get one las eye trip and maybe find some perch. Oh, and does VikingBay sell gas during the summer?

Thanks

Floater- We received close to a foot of snow this past weekend and are getting another few inches today & tonight. We just got our Ice house back out on the lake today after clearing some snow. Yes, we do sell gas in the summer from 8am-5pm, 7 days a week. Good luck on the eyes!

The Walleye bite was great this weekend especially from 5:30-7pm. The eyes were being a bit finicky and stripping minnows, but if you were patient you were able to take home some fish. Perch continue to bite during the daytime hours in 15-20fow. Locate green weeds and you'll find the fish. Heavy snowfall has made travel more difficult, however many 4 wheel drive trucks were still moving around the lake. The high winds that came through Monday after noon has slowed the action down a bit but hopefully the bite will return for the last weekend of walleye fishing until spring. Good luck out there. They're out there you just have to find them!

VikingBayAngler,

Thanks for the report. This is MBRA Guy down the shoreline from you, how deep are you getting the eye's? Are they on the edge to deep water or on top of the flat spread out? Comming up this weekend for a last hurrah until opener. Good to hear you are getting the snow up there. That lake needs the moisture for sure...had trouble getting the boat off the lift last fall at the end of the season...need to get a couple feet back hopefully. Anyway, thanks for your reports I love your end of the lake my nephew and his family stayed there in august (Blackwell Clan), caught some nice eyes and smallies out front of your place that week....great time!!!

Walleye season is closed until opener in May. But you can fish panfish this weekend.

Posted

Nice to hear from you MBRA Guy. Yes, Unfortunately walleye season has come to a close but we were picking nice eyes up in 15-20 fow off of a large peninsula that extended into 30-35 fow. The bite this past weekend was slow but head to the weeds and look for panfish! And yes hopefully all this snow does the lake some good. Opener will be here before you know it.

I knew that.....just testing.....OK, how have the crappies been bitting on Irene this winter???.....I guess I'll be heading over there this weekend....

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
