We're finally making it up this weekend, any reports out there? Ice conditions good for trucks I'm guessing?

How much snow do you guys have up there?

Thanks in advance

i asked that at christopherson's bait on saturday, and the guy laughed. he's a real treat to deal with. i'll be buying my tackle in glenwood next time. all he would say is that it isn't safe, but people are driving on it. he told us if we knew the lake well it should be ok. snow is all gone.

Ya all the "all-pro" guys at christophersons usually dont have a clue what is going on. I never go in there. I was on Ida 2 weeks ago and we found good ice on the majority of the lake. There has been people driving kinda everywhere so just stay on the tracks.

I am guessing he laughed thinking you were trying to make a joke about the truck that went in near Betsy Ross recently. Remember, ice is never 100% safe.

Am thinking about making a trip to fish Little Ida in the bay by Betsy Ross. Did a truck go through on the main lake side or in the bay by Betsy Ross? Does anyone know if the coontail and cabbage weeds are still standing in Little Ida. Seems like years with a lot of snow and little light penetration the weeds lay down, and in years such as this, the weeds remain standing. It makes a big difference for panfish. If anyone knows please advise.

There is an access down past the farm but it's not plowed. Ease if access is determined by the amount of snow. It's bee several years since my dad passed and sold his cabin, so info is not in real time. Can be a great spot for panfish as the weather warms, just off the weed libe edge.

If you go in past the farm stop at the house, I would usually give Mary Alice $5 for the right to use their road. Her dad George Christopherson owned the farm and the cabins also the big point with at beautiful house on it . We started staying in the cabins in 1957. My dad built his cabin right next to the farm in 1960. We had a lot of great tines on that lake, it's a great body of water with multi species and good fishing. I now have a cabin on another lake in east central Mn but my mind wanders back frequently to those good times. Enjoy and good luck

Anyone having success walleye fishing on Ida? I know it tends to turn on a little later than other area lakes, but I've had trouble marking fish, let alone catching many so far this year.

Hey Hallsie,

I have been searching out there as well for some 'eyes and have had little to no luck. I am thinking they are deeper. I had something nice on when I was pulling a lindy in 30ft, but it broke off. I would fish on those shelves that go from 25'-30' or even 35'-40'.

Not yet, I was up last weekend and had a hard time with the eyes.  I was marking them at 4:45am already coming off the shallower areas and creeping out into the deep holes.

The evening I was marking them up to around 19' but no takers on leeches or shiners.

Found some nice crappie and gills last night with bass mixed in on the weed edges.  No walleye to be found.  From what I observed in other boats it looked like the panfish were going.

Didn't catch Much the days I'm up Sunday-Tuesday. Caught 2 30plus inch Northerns and a 16 in Large Mouth that was pretty much it disappointing fishing weekend.

Any updates for Ida?  Hoping the weather clears up for the weekend, it's looking like it might be a bit rough tomorrow afternoon.

^^ Didn't think so

I was really surprised at the lack of fishing pressure out there over the weekend.  Ended up hitting a few other lakes in the area and had better luck. Maybe I need to try the south end of the lake a bit more or maybe it's a 2am bite out there :)

The walleye population has got to have gone down quite a bit, people just aren't out fishing the lake like you would have seen a couple of years ago in those "popular" areas.

Fished Ida Sat morning and got a few smaller eyes in around 30 fow over humps (livebait) and 1 trolling cranks along a 16 fow weed edge. Tried again in the evening but no eyes, did find a weed edge with some activity on mid lake structure, 4 largemouth, 1 smallie, 3 pike and 2 - 12" crappies in about14-16 fow on jigs and minnows. Weather was fantastic!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
