Little Ida has been making ice since Sunday when it was skinned over. Haven't been out on it yet and haven't seen anyone out on it yet. I'm going to walk out later this week and drill some holes. I'm guessing were getting an inch a day right now with this weather. I'll check back later.

Just wandered out and drilled a couple of holes. I'm off the northeast side, Gehrkes point area. Only went out about 50 feet. Only 2" of good ice with an inch of snow/slush on the top. I'll check Friday or Saturday again.

Main lake is locked up. There are a couple of houses out on Little Ida as of today. I'll go out tomorrow and drill some more holes to check ice conditions.

just returned from Ida. Entered from north landing and found between 3.5 to 4 inches of ice everywhere we went. A Lot of the snow is gone, although I'm not sure what it started with. I was looking for some gills or crappie and found neither in the area we were. But it was nice to get out and try my new otter box and seat for my pull over.

Good fishing,

Hallsie -

how's it looking for this upcoming weekend? Looks like temps are going to stay well below freezing.

Have you seen any wheelers or sleds out yet?

Thanks

It's looking good. Ice today is 5" or so. There are several small houses out on Little Ida and the main lake. I've seen a couple of ATV's out on the ice also. I'm going out tomorrow in my portable using my ATV.

Hey Hansen, won't even ask about your spots, but I'll be on Ida this weekend and I'm just wondering if you would be willing to share the depths you are finding them in? I tried to PM you, but you are over your limit apparently. smile

I'm interested as well, I'll be out all day Friday and throughout the weekend.

Josher - where are you at on Ida? We're up near the NW corner before little Ida.

We will most likely be on the west side across from the sand bar or a bit North of there somewhere. Still figuring out the plan, but we are usually over there somewhere. Good luck! Let me know how you are doing, I'll do the same.

How much ice is out there? Whole lake froze over or are there trouble spots? Anybody taking wheelers out very far? Going to be up there this weekend for christmas.

Dozer, I'm sitting on a good 9 inches right now. We brought the wheel house out last night and found a consistent 8-9 inches of good ice. Good luck!

I did OK out there, good solid 9" of ice Friday and just over 10" Sunday morning...Only area I didn't go was the southern section after pilgrim's.

Found most of the fish a little deeper 25-30 and around 20 after dark.

Yep. At least 7" in most areas. Just be careful between the reef and Gehrkes Pt. where there may be a little current.

We put the wheel house out north of pilgram point yesterday 8.5" of ice. Caught some small ones and a 15" Walleye. 11" of ice today, watched a 3/4 ton Chevy come on the pilgram point access and drive all the way to the west side of the lake! Ive never heard ice crack like that!

Otto or whoever...I have had a cabin in Ida my entire life and I have never heard of Gehrkes Point before. Which point is it? I have a cabin just north of old Camp Omaha on the south west side.

Had a good time late this afternoon. Sat in about 19' off of Gehrkes point. One 24" that went back and 3 nice eaters. Ice was about 12".

Good to know. I've had success right in front of my cabin with some decent size (southwest side). I might have to venture up to the north end this weekend. How is the ice from the sportsman public access to Gehrkes?

Hi Hallsie,

We had the blue portable out the 26th and caught a few, then we brought the big one out the 27th and did ok as well. (out front of Gehrkes). It slowed way down over the weekend. The pick-ups were about 200 yards from me. Is it still slow for you? or did it pick up a bit?

thx

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
