Even though it'll only be 1 1/2 weeks since I was last up there, I'm counting the days until this weekend. The prediction is for cooler temps which will be nice but high winds along with it. Could be interesting

WaveWacker how did you do this weekend? Never made it to the lake. To many chores do get done around home.. Will start in the next couple weeks

I hear you with the chores that need to be done. My list never seems to get any shorter. Just starting now huh? I wish I was up there more in the fall as I'd love to try to figure that pattern out. Seems as if I always have the intention but it never really pans out.

As to last weekend...Tough is the only word that I can come up with. The dramatic cold front/wind didn't help to put the fish into a feeding state of mind nor enjoyable fishing conditions. Didn't even put the boat in the water for Fri with the wind. Sat. yielded 2 fish and Sunday 3 for about 5 hours of fishing each day. Didn't mark fish on deep structure like I did a couple weeks ago. When I did see a couple they either didn't bite or had to be extremely coaxed into biting. Ran back on some shoreline (typical early June) structure/shallower mid-lake structure and found a couple. Ran all over the place fishing 22' - 40' is the point and never could find any real aggressive fish. So, were they just shut down due to the weather or are they transitioning into the fall patterns? I'm not sure.

All fish caught on redtails but did try crawlers and had some nice leeches as well (came from a friend that was up in Brainerd). Hopefully I'll be able to make it up a couple times yet but I've prepared myself for that potentially being my last trip on the water. Good luck marbleye!!

Well I would have thought with the rain we had that I would of had to fight my way in Oct. through harvest and any thoughts of one more trip to Ida eliminated. Well fortunately enough the current weather allowed me to get through most of the field work so now I'm thinking of heading back up this weekend to pull docks and fish. Anyone been out? Any report on depeths? Marble, have you been up recently? I'm not a big night plug pulling guy but I just may have to give it a try.

Thanks,

WW

Haven't been there lately. My folks were up all last week. Fishing was pretty spotty. Heading there with a group of guys. Friday night-Monday night. We will be hitting it hard. The fish are going just north of Ida. We will probably give that a try also. If you would like give me your cell#. send it to [email protected] I will give you mine back. Should be a nice weekend!

Heading up this coming weekend any tulibes being caught? If so north end or south.

Posted

Have no idea, but I would like to know where they get tulibes on Ida. They are fun to catch.

Crappie, from what I remember bout "bees" you usually find them suspended in water 30 ft or deeper. Find a jiggin spoon, tie on a 4-6 in mono dropper with a teardrop and tip with a waxie.. Fun fishing if you get into them!

my dad had a cabin in Christopherson Bay for over 30 years. This time of year we would head toward Big Horn point and fish anywhere from 30-50 FOW. They would supsend in the deep water and what a hoot to catch at that depth. This was a lot of years ago, so can't give you any current info.

Posted

is it worth fishing for them during the day? or just low light and dark hours?

Posted

When I have fished them, during the day seems to be the best.

Sniffer

Posted

really? Ive always caught them after dark, early in the morning just before sunrise to be the best. But I've never fished Ida

Posted

The best time on Ida would be right before sunrise and a little after. This is not like Mille Lacs or Leech Lake where you can catch them all day.

Posted

This is a really random question, but is there any tournaments on Ida, ice or open water?

Posted

There are a few bass tournaments in the summer but no walleyes... I wish someone would put one out there it would be a great walleye tournament. As for the tullibees I have heard its been alittle slow but early mornings have been when they are getting a few.

Posted

Thanks hh guide. Do u know of any websites I could check out to get some info on these tourneys?

Posted

Bc. I'd say your best bet would be to check with Christophersons bait shop in Alex. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

Alright thanks guys

Was on the lake Saturday through Monday. Walleye fishing was ok. Needed to keep jumpimng from spot to spot. Mid lake structure seemed to be the best for my boat. 26'-36' of water. Used Red Tails and crawlers. As the water starts to cool down fishing should only get better. Most fish were in the 15"-16.5" range. Also caught a 18" smallie.

Sounds like a good day catch'n walleyes. Thanks for the information.

That's about the same story for me, although leeches were working good as well. Biggest was 16.5" and all caught on mid lake structure, 25 - 30'.

Hows the bite coming along? and the water temp.? heading up on friday, and fishing sat-sun.

Oct-7th & 8th

Well I will start off by saying the wind was definetly blowing last Friday. 35+ from the south. This made for some interesting fishing. We fished mostly the east side of the lake. Fishing was ok. Caught mostly small fish 12"-14.5" fish. With them all going back. Saturday was a little different story. Wind was very mild. Fishing was good with the biggest being 19". Caught lots of small fish again but had some nice one mixed in. Jig and minnow was are best presentation. 30'-40' of water.

Hope to get there one more time before freeze up.

Thanks for the report. I'm heading up next weekend to put the boat away and hopefully do some fishing as well. What was the water temp last weekend?

Posted

It has been up and down with the weather. Smaller lakes are 59-62 degrees.

Thanks for the report marbleye!

I would think with the wind and cold nights we've been having, the water must be getting around the mid 50's by now?

Maybe it's wishful thinking since we're headed up this weekend for one last try. wink

We had a fun weekend on Ida over the new year. We were there with our families, so we didn't spend all day on the ice chasing fish. Pretty much stuck to a couple hours in the morning and a couple hours in the evening during prime time. We didn't tear it up, but had some pretty good action. Ended up with about 24 walleyes ranging from a few small 10-12 inchers to a few bigger 23+ fish with most falling in between the two. During the flurries, jigging produced better, and on the front and tail end of the action our set lines seemed to produce better.

The ice is pretty good, but be careful out there. My friend's wheel house sunk in an inch or two, so we moved it and ended up pulling it off the lake at the end of the weekend. Most of the ice we found was 9-10 inches, but there were spots that were a bit less.

Here are a couple pics from our weekend, good luck out there!

Nice fish! I was only able to get out Saturday morning and then Saturday evening...stayed near our cabin and didn't do very well.

I headed out sunday morning and turned right around as soon as I got about 300yrds onto the ice, that wind vs a portable...I stood no chance!

I don't need no livescope to catch fish....🤔🤪  It's all in how ya wiggle the worm!😜 Just sayin  🤣

Obviously this is more of a hot topic due to forward facing sonar. With that being said, I know people who have pulled crappies out of basins 40+ deep since the fl-8 and zercom flashers came out. That's over 30 years ago. I do think there's a push to ban these in MN and I could see them doing it here. They'll have to pay my livescope from my cold dead hands 😆 on days I can't catch a walleye jigging or rigging it's nice to turn it on and throw corks at individual fish

It wasn't just you, I was fishing west of you about an hour on Monday. Fished 8am-4pm, no fish, two keeper walleye and one small one from 4pm-630pm. Marked a lot of fish, they would come up to a jig and swim away. They were skittish to the dead stick too

I wonder like divers, if we let them decompress every 10' for 1/2hr. If that would help?  🤔  It would slow the bite down a bit!  🤭

That was a better study compared to last winter when they setup the vertical tube nets and tried to release exhausted fish from being studied and expected them to be able to swim straight down a 3' hoop net.     That lake's crappie population from this latest video was pretty deep at 40-50', and no doubt from those depths that is barotrauma for most.  That is deeper than most crappie holes but certainly how some are. However from helping give fish a good release from the 35' and less range and tracking them with live sonar most of them swim at a shallow angle back to the depths and I watch them rejoin the school and be active.  Uncut Angling's video helped counter some of the initial narrow findings.

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.
