Hope the Zebes in the thread wear their winter gear tonight. A low of 22 tonight.

I heard this morning that the Ely High School football team was involved in a fatal accident yesterday on their way to a game.

Based on what I've heard, there were no injuries to the team. A passenger in the car later died and 2 other occupants are in critical condition.

From the Strib:

COLERAINE, Minn. - An 18-year-old died after the car she was riding in collided with a school bus carrying the Ely High School football team.

The State Patrol says the crash happened on Highway 169 in Coleraine about 3:30 p.m. Friday when the car pulled out in front of the bus while crossing the highway.

The Patrol says Emerald R. Foss of Bovey was airlifted to a Duluth hospital where she later died in the emergency room.

An 18-year-old driver and another 16-year-old passenger also were injured and airlifted to Duluth hospitals in critical condition.

The Patrol says the bus driver suffered a minor injury. None of the 23 players or three coaches on the bus was injured.

Officials canceled Friday night's homecoming game and dance at Onamia High School.

wow, that is out of control! Never good to hear news like that.

We had .25 inch snow on the field in benson by the time the game was over. We started the game in short sleeves, and ended up in coats HAHA!

It was Homecoming for LSH lastnight. Unfortunately, they couldn't finish the day with a win. Again, their (LSH) defense came out strong after allowing Mayer to score on their first drive.

Our offense struggled to get outside of their half of the field. Swanny had very little protection all night. The front line had more leaks in it than the Titanic. You could tell in the second half that Swanny was starting to feel the pounding that Mayer Luth. was handing him. He was sacked several times. I quit counting after #4. One of those, we lost 20 yards.

It was definitely an ugly game to watch for the LSH fans. If there's any positive to come from this, Swanny is gaining valuable experience. If there was anything I would have rather seen the coaches do, is to pull Swanny from the game for a couple series to allow him to gain his composure.

By the end of the night, the score was a mere 14-0. Not representative of how it actually went. IMO, Mayer Luth. was far more physical than what LSH expected.

One thing for certain, LSH needs a better committment out of the coaching staff to establish/enforce a weight training program. Sibley East, NYA, and Mayer Luth. have turned the corner and will be tough teams to face in the MRC within the next 2 years.

Lep, your right.

If you want to get better year after year, you have to take it to the next level, and do more then just play the game of football!

Lep, sorry to hear that your Giants homecoming didn't fare so well friday night, but thrilled to report that Belle Plaine pummeled Holy Family much to my surprise!

HF's defense was not as good as I thought it would be and they seemed to be lacking team speed. Thier best RB is listed at 225 lbs. Very physical and hard to bring down but not fast enough to break a big run. They are very 1 dimensional on offense, attempting only a handfull of passes all night even though they were way behind the whole game. Kicking game is shaky at best. Defenders were not fast enough to keep up with BP's recievers.

LSH played a much tougher game against BP for sure.

I agree Dave. Congrats to Belle Plaine. Glad to see they beat up on Holy Family. grin Looks like BP has pretty much secured conference this year.

COATS Bass?!?!?!?!!!!!! Did your husbands pack those for you to bring to the game?!?! We absolutely won't wear them in a game. Under armor, maybe a sweatshirt and then weather beater stripes is all you need. I wouldn't mind the black NFL pants though...

It is too early for this playoff weather though, makes working some of these games a real chore. With MEA this week I have quite the schedule, worked a JV game last night have a MN game tomorrow night and an IA game Friday. PLEASE WARM UP!!!

LEP, it is my understanding that there is no legal way to enforce an offseason weight program in MN. IA allows this and none of our area coaches want to play interstate games down there because they feel they can't match their programs given our restraints on this.

Enforce is the wrong word though lawdog, I didn't miss a day of lifting during the summer while I was playing highschool ball. It doesn't need to be a rule that you need to lift or you won't play because the guys in the weightroom (for the most part) are going to be ahead of the people who aren't and will get more playing time.

If teams and coaches want to compete they need players with a serious dedication to the weightroom, not just one or two either. The majority of the team and especially the starters need to be there 4-5 times a week. It makes a huge differnce, I played in the Southern MN confrence for 4 years and now scout it for my former team and it is very obvious which teams have guys that hit the weights. They are better conditioned and are just a level above teams that don't.

I agree totally RR its just that you can't make it a requirement in MN whereas some states allow it with formalized required programs. Thats all i was saying...

Wow, tough night for football last night with many games on Wed due to MEA. Worked a game in about 35 degree weather with a torrential rain the entire second half... 8-6 game without a lot of offense to keep things moving. Now that's cold (still no coats though).

The LSH game was 42-0 with 6 minutes left in the 3rd in favor of Holy Family. A performance like this should give Montgomery some hope for our last game against them.

I noticed that Glencoe was dominate again last night. They are undeafeated and I would guess will again win the state championship if injuries don't plaque them.

Man they are just plan awesome. A real dynasty.

I think GSL has enough conditioned players that even with some injuries they will still win state LSH boys just plain got wore out over the season from lack of it exspecially the last 2 games

Sorry, I don't see where I said "off-season" in my last post. smirk

Either way, lifting during the season does little except maintain, these kids bodys get enough of a work out just keeping up with the game of football that there is little left to build more muscle.

Like I said, for a team to be good and compete this day and age, they need a serious commitment to the weightroom for the entire year.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
