I have been in the wireless business for over a decade, and lease and zone cell sites, and was previously a zoning adminstrator for municipalities. I have at lot of experience designing cell sites in visually sensitive locations incluing forested areas. Usually, siting and design can be successfully accomplished in a fashion that is invisible, or nearly so, particularly in forested areas.

I reconfirmed the tower is an American Tower Corp owned. It was probably built with a wireless carrier commitment. It is highly probable that the other major carriers will follow and colocate on the structure.

In my opinion a 400 foot, guyed tower is inappropriate in this setting.

A tower company typically builds towers to accomodate as many wireless carriers as possible. That practice assures towers are huge and visually obtrusive. Local governments typically encourage this practice in zoning regulations based on the theory that colocation design avoids proliferation of towers. I vehemently disagree with this design strategy imposed by local zoning. Multiple small, properly designed facilities are almost allways a preferred design strategy.

The wireless carriers are not to blame for this disappointing outcome. The responsibility rests on the shoulders of the local zoning authority.

That would be St Louis county, unless the township does their own. Do any of the townships up there do their own planning and zoning?

Greenwood does handle its own Zoning but something got screwed up on this deal and the County had something to do with it. I will update as I learn more about just what happened. There should have been a Conditional use permit for it and that would have required a public hearing but that did not happen.

THIS TOWER IS IN AN AREA WITH A LOT OF PINES. PINE TREES ARE VERY EFFECTIVE IN DEGRADING RF SIGNALS. THE WAY TO GET COVERAGE IN THESE AREAS IS BY RAISING THE ANTENEAS AND INCREASING THEIR DOWN TILT TO GET MORE OF AND UMBRELLA COVERAGE.

AT&T WAS THE CARRIER THAT MADE THE INITIAL COMMITMENT WITH ATC.

THERE MAY BE OTHER PLANS FOR THIS TOWER BESIDE CELLULAR. I WOULD PUT MONEY ON IT THAT HOMELAND WILL BE ON THE TOWER ALSO. (THE COAST GUARD HAS TERRIBLE COVERAGE UP THEIR) wink

Duh!! Wonder how that could have happened in Greenwood Township?

Cliff

I'm still trying to figure out how we got anexed into Greenwood township without a vote sick

Sort of sounds like taxation without representation.

Stop in at the Township office and get the whole story.

The township border change (technical term rather than annexation) was brought about by a petition that was presented to the Township by year round residents, (living in that area) requesting that the area be brought into the Township.

so, they were living in an unincorporated area or something? I have never heard of a township annexing anything.

On the other hand, down here every place is already part of a township and the only annexation is from the township to a city or town.

Correct del, there are many areas up here that are unorganized. Meaning not a part of any political subdivision. Cities and Towns have the ability to annex.

Minnesota statues do not allow Townships to annex anything but they can do border changes which much be initiated by petition including something like 60% of the registered voters of the area to be brought into the township. (don't quote me on the 60% but it is some percentage of the elgible voters)

The area from just west of Timbuktu to just west of Ludlows is all unorganized.

You can call it border changes or a mini vermilion plan it really does not matter.

from the dictionary

Annex

to take over territory and incorporate it into another political entity

Isn't that what happened?

I was only trying to give the facts. Go to the Township office. I'm sure that the original petition is on file and you should be able to see who requested to become part of Greenwood. There is no way that one can say that this was a typical governmental, shoved down your throat, action. Well, I guess one can say anything that they want, but the facts are the facts.

I can see the tower wayyyyyyy out in Niles bay. So much for out in the wilderness. If I can get cell-pone coverage from new tower, it will be easier to accept. I don't think we can do anything to stop it or get rid of it.

Anybody know who approved the construction of the tower?

Out in the Wilderness? Surely you jest. A few miles from a 4 lane highway, lined with houses and resorts and a casino, is not wilderness.

It is a beautiful lake and I love it dearly but it isn't wilderness.

Del,

I couldn't have said it better. We love Lake Vermilion and wouldn't trade our place for any other lake. Beautiful it is, wilderness it is not. Having the new cell tower, and for us, cell phone service for the first time, is a plus. The tower is minor compared to what is already on the lake.

Del

Go to the back of Van Ripers bay tonight at 9:18, get out of your boat, walk 48 paces into the woods, spin in circles 7 1/2 times, now walk and tell yourself this is not wilderness. LOL X 10000

How about park your boat at fortune bay tonight, walk 50 paces into the parking lot, spin around three times and put 5 dollars on red. :-) :-)

Don't forget to tip the dock attendant. :-)

Just joshing you back.

Every time I catch that tower flashing out of the corner of my eye it looks like lightning and I look around for bad weather. Thats kind of a wilderness feeling. Plus, now my cell coverage is so good I'm getting rid of my land line. Getting more "wildernessy" all the time. I guess these days we have to take it where we can get it!!

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a place on a Anna Lake by Emily Mn and 10 years ago they put up a cell phone tower off hwy 6 and the front of my cabin faced the tower. I hated it so I sold the property and bought a place up the Echo Trail on Big Lake, no power, boat access only to get away from it. I figured it was only a matter of time before something happens up there and without going into detail about it I found out it was sooner not later. You really can't get away from it anymore.

Have to say I agree...things of man showing up in even the most remote places we love to hide in.

People lose the meaning of GETTING AWAY...amazingly boring to me but progress can not be stopped...shame.

Also love BIG lake up Echo trail.

Have friends on Burntside long long time, have always love it up the trail.

See any Moose latly?

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.

I'll bet she's better at it!!!!
