1st Walleye Sets Bar High

My 7 year old grandson, Benjamin caught his first walleye yesterday. It was caught off the dock at his parents cabin on a "un-named" Brainerd Lakes area lake early in the morning, while still wearing his PJ's. The monster walleye measured 29" long with a 17-1/2" girth weighing in at 11 pounds! The fish took the Gulp-Alive minnow and bobber combination hook-line-and sinker, the battle ensued until Benjamin's mom got the net and landed this beautiful fish. The fish is being mounted as it did not survive after all the excitement.

Wish I could post the picturs of this beautiful fish and bigger smile!

Sweet story! He will always be able to counter others catches now later in life. "Oh yeah? I caught bigger fish while I was 7 in my PJ's"

Great catch, Benjamin! It's going to be tough to beat that one. I know.

In 1985, my girlfriend (now wife for 20+ years) caught a 29 1/2 inch Walleye near Park Rapids, which we had mounted. She wasn't much for fishing and told me that she wouldn't go with me again until I caught a bigger walleye. So...I've been fishing (with the guys) for 24 years. My biggest in that time has been 27 1/2" inches.

Here is the photo of Benjamin's 1st eye. That smile tells the whole story. That will be a tough eye to top in his years to come fishing.

Congrats Benjamin.
