We stayed on a friend's island and fished a spread of around 10 miles of the lake. Your best bet is to get out with the electronics and search for the schools along with talking to the locals to see what the current patterns are. Look for wind blown reefs and rock points as a start. For us live bait rigging leeches and fatheads worked best. Trolling cranks can be the ticket if you find them suspended.
