Hmmm...I just snagged half a coconut hull out of the Huron River in southeast Michigan last week.

I've snagged several live clams, as well as a half-grown mallard, and a fully-grown beaver--the last two were very much alive as well. I landed and un-hooked the duck--the beaver busted my line.

I've also caught a lot of crankbaits, spinners, jigs, and livebait rigs that were lost by someone else. I've also recovered a few lures that I'd lost myself earlier that day, or even a few days before.

As a kid I hooked a soft shell turtle in the back foot that put up one whale of a fight.

I watched a buddy catch a rod holder while we were ice fishing.

OK I know this is sort of "cliche" but I caught a boot a few years ago. It even had a couple of crawfish inside. Also caught a 5 lb. pike in canada that had a decomposing muskrat lodged in it's throat. The rats tail was hanging out the side of it's mouth and it stunk to high heaven. Even with his mouth wedged open, he still nailed my red and white spoon.

i got a small muskie off a dock once with the whole left side of his face and bill gone. my old man got a muskie of about 25 pounds that must have been hit by a boat, it had about 25% of the top bill gone and dent of about five inches deep in its back. a buddy of mine got a dead mouse while fly fishing on trout run creek. when i was younger i got a little pink catfish on a worm, still not sure if its a kind of catfish or a baby one. had a leech grab onto a topwater muskie lure on lake of the woods, twice.

I snagged a big dead and bloated beaver in the root. So gross to see that thing bubble up to the surface.

Back in the early 80's my friend and I were ice fishing in my small permanent house. I got my line all tangled around another line, and had a real rat’s nest going. After 10 minutes of trying to get everything untangled, I reached for the line, and dropped my new jigging pole down the hole. Everything went down, line and all in about 20 feet of water.

The next weekend (We hadn’t moved the house) I had a bite, when I set the hook it felt very heavy. My friend went to the next house to get a gaff just in case, so a small crowd gathered to see what I had. As I reeled in a crappie came up through the hole tail first. When I grabbed it there was two jigs in its mouth, and still attached to the second jig was my pole from the week before. I swear…a true story, and I still have that pole today.

Was ice fishing with two of my buddies in the fish house....then bamm they both setted their poles. One reeled the fish up as the other looked, a crappie took both their minnow. First time I've seen something like that.

When I was a kid we were fishing the sucker run on Beaver Brook, an off shoot of the Littlefork River. My dad snagged a good sucker rig, you know, a hook swivel and a sinker. He just took it off and threw it in his tackle box. A couple minutes later some guy come crawling through the brush following his line right to my dads tackle box. Funny stuff right there.

I guess this is more about the bait than the catch... but seems to fit with the mood of the forum.

When I was about 5 and my brother was 7, we were both sitting at the end of the dock on a hot summer's day with our feet dangling above, or slightly in the water (it was only about two feet deep at the end of the dock).

I think you know where this story is going, and yes it ended in crying and a trip to the emergency room for my brother after a northern came out and hit his foot like a topwater lure!!! He still doesn't enjoy catching northerns, or handling them afterwards, but I have noticed a slight grin on many occassions when I slide that filet knife along some northern's backbone...

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
