Colter, thanks for the help. I live in Iowa and have been going to Pokegama for the family week vacation since I was one year old in 1961. Always have had decent luck with northerns. Have caught some walleye but never great luck. Doing the family thing(swimming, skiing, etc)during the day has kept me from fishing Pokie at night a whole lot. I have had some sucess the few times I went. Well this year we my wife, son, and I might be staying a little longer than a week so maybe I can get out at night a few more times. I am more of a musky fisherman so we usually pull the boat over to Moose or the river between the dams to try for them also. I envy you guys that live up there year round. I do go snowmobiling up your way also. We will be up there probably Aug. 20-29, not a good moon period for light, but we'll try anyway.

Sean:

How was the bite last night? I trolled around Wendigo until around 11. Nothing. Spent some time chasing panfish with the wife and daughter. Couple of crappies in my hole and some rockies. Couldn't do anything too serious. I hope to try again tonight on the other end.

Greg:

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

I have lived on the lake for almost 30 years, but have not taken to fishing it much at all until this year (bad timing as this is a really slow year).

I can't really tell you where to fish as I am just learning the lake myself. Give me a shout when you come up and maybe we could get lost out there together. I generally fish alone and have an empty seat in the barge. (I release the 4lbs, eat the little ones.)

You can email me at [email protected]

Was out last night, marked a ton of fish from 7-15 FOW from 9:45-11:00pm. No biters though! They vanished after 11. Varied speed, baits, nothing worked.

Yup. I was out on the West end until 1:30. Marked fish all over the place, cought one rockie. Lots more boats out though, so maybe someone did well...

What a beautiful night to be out. Fish would have been a bonus, but just being out there with my puppies was worth it. A little tired today, but what the heck.

Like Sean says, there will be plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead.

Still slow out there. I wish I knew what I am doing wrong. Out there on the West end until almost 2 this AM, graphing lots of fish. I drifted the humps around the islands and threw leeches and crawlers at them. Again busted.

It sure was a beautiful night though. Water temp is finally over 70. I'll keep at it and post if I catch anything.

If anyone is having better luck and is looking for a seat or has an empty seat, let me know. I can go out most any night.

the only way I wanna even deal with fishing walleyes is trolling some sort of crankbait after dark! And from what I read and hear pokie is tailor made for that but dont listen to me I never fish the lake. just putting in my 2 cents:-)

Anybody have any general info on bass and walleye? I will be up next week, and we have always caught pike, and a couple bass. Looking to find more bass, and maybe a walleye or two.

does anybody have any insight as to when the whitefish spawn is it temp related like other fish and if so any idea on what temp triggers them

My x's uncle was always standing on ice when he set his whitefish nets on Bass Lake, by Cohasset.

With the warm temps we're gonna have and Pokeg's tendency to ice over late, you might want to have a small boat or canoe ready to put your nets out.

I talked to a reliable source today and he's getting them on a lake over here by Deer River. Better get the nets out now if you want some!!!

Andy,

Pokegama is one of the last lakes to ice up around here. With this goofy fall weather we're having, who knows when that will be? I'd be leary of driving a vehicle out there.

I fished it a little for walleyes in the winter, so my experience is very limited. I'd start out around 20' of water and work my way out deeper (40'). The base of steep drop offs would be a good area to target. There is a HUGE population of smelt in Pokegama and that means big fish, granted they can be tough to catch because they eat well.

Keep a crappie rod rigged w/ a small spoon and some meat. You'll see suspended fish come through that are sometimes slab crappies.

When I used to spear it for northerns, at least 90% of the gators were speared had smelt in their stomachs.

Good Luck!

Brian

i fish Pokegama a lot in the winter for walleyes, the night bite is slow to non existant and i would spend most of the daylight hours chasing pike right at dark and daylight i would spend jigging for eyes

I fish Pokey all winter for the past bunch of years and i can tell you that the eye bite can be good but short. If you are thinking about a sleeper, you can plan on sleepin undisturbed all nite. Some folks do drive vehicles out but i'm not one of them. I M O the ice can change in short distances and since the new bridge i think the current has changed. There is a sheet of ice to the west from the bridge out about 1/2 mi. than it open water.

If you plan on drinking, a sleeper is a good idea. Drink as much as you can after 515 cause you won't be catching eyes. My advice. BE MOBILE! Every winter the bite is anywhere from 20 to 25 minutes long in the morning and evening, and on a night when the barometer is drastically changing you might get 30 minutes. Once vehicles are safely able to drive out, the bite for the most part is over.

Hang loose -it sounds like yuo have pokeg a few times. I've had good results after vehicles are movin around - just have to do things a little different. Mobility and B.P. are key.

Hang Loose has been on PoKegs once or twice... people say they are MOBILE but many times are not. Work and you'll get your fish.

Thanks for the advice on what to do after 5:15...

Hookset- Yes, fish can be caught once one can drive his truck on the ice (not the safest idea on Kegs), but eye action is no where near what it is from now till then. I am pumped to get out there and slam some hogs. TRUST ME ON THAT!

Scottie- YOU BETTER BE READY! NEXT WEEKEND GR!!!! SLABS and FOOTBALLS!!!!! Im taking friday off as well. ITS ON.

Yes, I have been on kegs once or twice in my days....

Two of my friends have a perminent house on Pokegama. They have been out there every night for a week now. They have been hammering the walleyes. Big fish also. Typical Pokegama walleye bite. It lasts 45 minutes and then shuts off. Well worth the 45 minutes though. I live in the cities and grew up in Grand Rapids. Im coming up for the holidays to land a few of those hog fish.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
