Was out on the north end last night with a good friend of mine, we took sleds and fish traps out so there was no problem getting around. Caught 9 walleyes and about 25 9" plus perch all in about 3 hours. Pretty fun day with the warm weather!

Went to Gull today and the fish were biting. Checked out a few humps and they were all loaded with schools of active perch, on top. The perch were super aggressive and ended up catching a half dozen jumbos. Caught a bunch of small eyes throughout the afternoon and a couple keeper size towards dark. Here is a pic of the 30 incher grin That's my little fishing/hunting buddy wondering "what is that thing?" then she decided to give it a kiss before I let it go. Pout001.jpgPout002.jpg

Most of them were 16 to 18", and caught the usual couple cigars! good sign tho, means there is more fish for the future!

Definately gets the blood flowing when you get a big fish like that on. I was hoping it was a walleye but still fun to pull in. Never tried eating pout but I here they are pretty good. By the look of her belly, I'd say there is going to be a bunch more pretty soon.

The pup was more curious than anything. When I first started taking her fishing, I tried not to get excited when I caught fish. Now she could care less but she loves to eat the minnow tails. Kinda funny when we get home and she gives the GF a kiss laugh

Guessing around 10 pounds maybe. There was a pretty good die off a few summers ago. Pout and tullibee don't seem to do well when the water gets too warm.

I'm heading up to Gull to fish for the first time in the early morning tomorrow. could someone tell me how to access the lake? ill be coming up 371 and staying in Nisswa. And any other advice on a place to get started fishing would be nice too but not necessary. Thanks 2c

i've said this before

but i think pout run in cycles

few yrs back i had my house in about the middle of the contest was going to be held

and was catching nice 4-6 lb pout every night

thought i might finally catch something during the tornement but na..na..na kept

my shunk going lol

any though around those yrs back then it was a pout wining the contest

but i thinks it been awhile since one won

mostly walleyes till this yr

i'm not sure bout that die off traxx gull is awful deep for it to warm enough to

kill fish off..usally the last lake froze (including mille lacs) and the last to open unless you get some of those big winds in the spring

There is a public access by Hole in the Day Bay off of 371 on Gull Lake Drive. Its just north of Round Lake or about two miles south of the Holiday station by county road #77

A few summers ago when I was working at Grand View, there was a pretty strong south wind for a few days. I remember it was pretty hot that summer. There was a ton of them were washing up on the beach every day for a while. I know some wash up every summer when it gets real hot but that summer it seemed like it was way more than normal. They were pretty big ones so it might just have been a big year class dieing off.

I remember the die off. It was in '07. I stopped by the 371 access and the shoreline was lined with dead tullibee, and yes they were all big ones. Some of them could have topped 3 pounds shocked Leech (among others) had a big die off at about the same time as well.

I'll be at mille lacs this weekend, and LOW next month, I can only hope to catch a sumo 'pout like that!

I live on the west side of Gull and we have had several die offs over the past few years in late July early August. Lots of Whitefish and some Pout.

Checked out some of the deeper humps today in 30-39 fow. Most had active schools of perch on top, with a few smaller walleyes mixed in here and there during the day. Some of the spots had better size to the perch with a couple jumbos in the bunch. Moving spots til you find the bigger size perch and hole hopping is key. Towards primetime, moved up to a weedline in 12' with some green weeds and caught a couple nice 20" walleyes. Jigging with small spoons tipped with a minnowhead is the ticket right now, for both perch and walleye. 1/16th ounce Northland Glo chub Forage Minnow or a Lindy Rattlin Flyer in perch pattern is what I have tied on. wink

The reports were good for big eyes this past weekend. Here is a pic of Steve a lucky client with a beauty 26" from the full moon weekend. Steve002.jpg

Nice fish! I'll heading up this weekend for one more shot at the marble eyes. My permanent is on a sharp drop off in 24 fow with weeds all around me but not directly underneath my shack. From the most recent reports it sounds as if the walleyes have moved in shallower water during the low light hours?

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.

Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.
    • PSU
Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
    • SkunkedAgain
I hope to see it and believe it next week! Nice looking crappie
