Do you know anywhere that has spot tail shiners in? I've called 4 bait stores so far. 2 have no shiners, 2 have golden shiners, no one has spot tail shiners.

Spot -tail shiners are the real deal on Gull for the first couple of weeks. Lindy's or jigging will produce fish. Start looking for fish along the first shoreline drop or weedline anywhere on the Northwest side of the lake. You may even find a few walleyes in the channels yet.

We have plenty of spot-tails in the tanks and we will getting more all weekend. No need to worry about shortages.

Go by Bar Harbor fish of the docks if you don't have a boat. By the docks if you do.

There are a number of spots on Gull that are producing crappies and big sunnies lately. If I was a first timer out there I would put in at the public access near Zorbaz and fish down through lake Margaret and upper Gull. It is full of fish right now and you'll always have somewhere to hide if the wind picks up. It can be a great place to pick up a few walleyes too.

Thanks for the info on the forums Jason.

Brother-In-Law and I will be up tomorrow from the cities for a friendly Walleye competition with some friends on Gull Chain/Round (we don't mind catchin' some slabs too) - we'll be sure to stop in for Spot-Tails and Rainbows and any advice :-) last year we got destroyed as the champs hit round which was very hot while we got wind-blown around gull... this year bigger boat and hopefully some bigger luck!

some losers dumped their cleaned fish and skins at the dam access on the south side of the lake. One walleye looked to be 25inches or so. Its just sad that there is a fish cleaning house 50yds away and they throw them off the docks. This was Sunday morning. We had spottail shiners but only got some perch.

We did well today in 13'-15',during the day. Weeds were key, in or next to the weeds produced fish. Lindys, fluorocarbon leaders and spottail shiners, from Sportland Bait, worked for us. Highlight was a scrappy 34" northern. Good Luck

The north end of Gull has been good. Yesterday we got some fish in 8 feet with jigs and fatheads, also got them with live bait rigs and shinners in 28-32 feet on the same spot, but totally different schools of fish. It was pretty cool! Fishing in the wind seems to help. Check out the Hayfield and Cobbins bar. There are also fish in Booming out bay, those fish seem to be in that 12-15 foot range. I would say be willing to change spots and technique often and you will get them. Good luck!

Traxxx is absolutely right. I have been fishing the same way and have done really well the past week or so. Nice walleye's every time out.

They are relating to the new weeD growth especially near deep water and if there are rocks present. I have been using a floater head instead of a plain hook. This will keep the shiner up a bit from the weeds. Has been working well!

If the weather/wind settles down a bit they should really turn on!

Thanks guys- the north end looks nice on the GPS- tons of structure- So do the weed lines usually start around 10-12 feet? How long do u guys run your snells- I've got mine set up long (7-9 feet) for Mille Lacs mud!

The weedline depends where you are on the lake. Some spots it starts shallow, some deep. Most spots I would say it doesn't go deeper than 14' As far as snells, 4-6' is what I typically run. The clarity on Gull isn't nearly what it is on Mille Lacs.

The eyes we really going last night...even with the East wind and cold front. Fished 4:30-8:30 and ended up with really happy people. 16-22 feet was the best. Livebiat rig and shinners we had shorter snells in the 4 foot range.

Looks like you have gotten some great advice. I know I couldn't have said things better myself. All three of the guys that replied are some of the best anglers on Gull. Take their advice and you should be able to pick a few off out there. Good luck this weekend and have some fun!

Mississippi. No question. Good smallie and northern action right now. Throw mepps aglias into the grass along the banks. Firetiger for pike or black and orange for smallmouth. Any small inline spinner will work.

I've put in at the Brainerd Cemetery and also at Crow Wing State park. Headed to the Cemetery today. Thats where I've had the most luck. Be with 2 other guys in a small alumicraft from about 1960. Hard to mistake us.

is the crappie spawn or good bite over on gull.

We are going to be near by at Breezy point with the kids and I have always been told to fish gull over Pelican. I was thinking more of crappies for the kids than trying to fish for walleye.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
