question about sucker runs in the area

Recommended Posts

anyone have any information on any type of rough fish opportunities in the Duluth area? I've got to assume with all of the streams around there ought to be something. Suckers are an important part of a good trout stream from what I hear. I'm going to do more research, but I figured I'd ask the locals here first, then move to the rough fish forum. I'm just itching to get something on the other end of the line and I'm not big into trout fishing, caught a few small brooks a few years back, and one of them didn't survive. I'm no expert and i don't want to damage the resource so I'm looking for some ugly fish.

there is a good river that goes under the lavaque road between rice and fish lake. last year there were a ton of suckers in there.

I know that the suckers run pretty good the first week or two of May on Vermilion so they should run down here about a week or so earlier, depending on how warm the spring is.

Check all the creeks that flow into the St. Louis River. Some are very easily accessed by foot with some waders or hip boots.

The one up by 131st st in Fon Du Lac (the name slips me, my dome isnt working great lately )is great for suckers. Its just past the playground as you cross over the small bridge hook a left into the parking lot and walk the shoreline or park just above the bridge and walk down. That would probably be easier without trespassing on peoples land.

Tons of long-nose and white suckers run the Lester in the spring.

You really should try and catch a trout...... You will change you target species real quick! wink

I'd rather leave the trout fishing to the real trout fisherman.

I'm a bass/muskie angler just looking to get a line wet and catch anything that will bite. This time of year i feel like my best bet is suckers. thanks everyone for the info.

Remember, even though you are targeting rough fish, you will need to have a trout stamp if you are fishing in such designated streams.

I'm sorry but other than those that dump into Lake Superior, I don't know specifically which ones are designated. I'm sure someone here will provide that information.

The river between boulder lake and island lake(otter river) is were we go. We used regular landing nets with about three guys holding the nets and the chase them into the nets from upstream. We call it cowboy style. Works like a charm and its over quick. You gotta know when its time to pull the nets though youll get alot more than you want in a big hurry.

Miller Creek which runs right next to the WLSSD and under the freeway (i-35) has a good spring sucker run. I checked it this afternoon and they are not running yet. It also has a fairly good smet run.

I did see a few up river but not many. I still think its at least a week away but 76 degrees forecasted tomorrow may get things moving faster.

Heading up to LV a week from today with the kids. Any advice for us? Staying on the West side but open to traveling if the weather permits.   The way the last few weeks have gone, might stay for good!!!

Do have Wi-Fi in your house. Your going to need that to work with any of the cameras that send a signal and video to your phone.  Hardwire is the best but battery power workers well for about two months then you have to pull them and recharge them.  It is nice to sit on a beach in Key West and keep an eye on your house when gone! 👌

With all the craziness in the world I’m looking at getting an outdoor security camera setup for my home. Anyone have ideas on what works well without a huge cost  and easy to do . Or is it better to go with a company to set it up.  We have recently had copper thefts in the area at farmers fields and bin sites and I know it will only gat worse as these things always do. I probably want something that hooks up to my phone as well and wondering if there is a good one with either battery life or if wired is better. Any thoughts are welcome.

Aren't they the ones that ran into problems about illegal bait? Anyone know how that turned out?

You launch on Moose Lake to get to the motorized portage. It's called Prairie portage. To get to the portage you put in at Moose Lake. From Moose you go into Newfound Lake. From Newfound you go into Sucker Lake. On Sucker is where Prairie portage is. There is a dock on the American side and on the Canadian side there is big sign welcoming you to Canada. Latourell's Resort runs the portage and the cost for the portage is $40 for a round trip.

Will that blond haired kid have that cool little orange boat in the show this weekend? Saw him driving around by Muskego Point a few times this summer.

Nope, there are parts of Basswood that allow motors.   Entry is from Fall Lake, and there is (I think) a motorized portage.   It is really popular in the spring...
