I'm back to work in the field and not in the office until Thanksgiving, so my computer time is way down. I posted some pictures in the Lets see some turkey pictures. I have had two good hunts last week. I called in 2 Toms for my cousin on his last day of his season. We went out about 5:30 pm and had the two tom come the decoys we had out about 15 yards. I had those birds pretty much figured out. I have been watching them for over a week. I wasn't so sure if I should of brought him there seeing my season started the next morning. He went out a day early with his wife and she shot her first turkey. So I helped him out so he could get his first turkey, 10 in beard 3/4 in spurs and 20 pds.

The next day I went to a different spot that I knew had some turkeys in the area. I set out some decoys and about 7 am a jake and a hen came in . After a about 5 mins I noticed that the jake kept looking back from which they came from. I kept looking over there and finally a tom appeared. I gave him some soft clucks and he started to make his way over. At about 20 yards I let him have it. 9 1/2 in beard, 22 pds and only 1/2 in spurs. I have been very fortunate this year 3 birds & 3 different states. I can't wait until next spring, though I will try this fall too. The other one that was with the one my cousin shot, should be a real nice tom next year, if he makes it. I think its time to try the string and stick next year.

Sounds like you've had a great season! Just to keep my frustration levels high I spooked two toms again this morning. Gonna be at the cabin the next couple days then I've got till Thursday to fill my MN tag.

Heard several this morning so I'm optomistic. Wish this darn pesky work didn't keep getting in the way. frown

I heard a few gobbles from above my listening position so I snuck up and spotted a bird in a pasture 100 yards away. I set up against the closest tree and made one series of yelps. I could tell there was more than one bird but not what they were or how many. I could barely see through a brushy fenceline but could tell at least one bird was coming my way. Another soft yelp and a full fan came into view. The first bird was a jake so I waited. The tom soon showed himself at about 25 yards and the trusty 870 did her job. After the shot I jumped up and spotted at least 6 hens running for distant cover. I just called two toms away from their harem. Spend enough time in the woods and all kinds of good things are bound to happen.

Almost a match of my WS bird. 18 lbs. 10 1/2" beard. 3/4" spurs.

Didn't mind sleeping in yesterday. Hunted at least parts of 13 of 16 days of my seasons since May 6th. Filled 2 of 3 tags so yes, it was a successfull season, but one of the toughest is recent memory. Decoys did nothing for me, calling rarely worked and I spooked darn near every bird I saw. Sometimes things just go like that.

If only eyehead would get his bird registered we'd have a shot at winning this thing. What do you suppose happened to him?

Yeh they made you work for them thats for sure. Its amazing that sometimes they come right in & sometimes you can try everything and they just don't respond. You had alot of days in the field the past few weeks. Did you learn anything you would like to share?

My brother & his buddy went back to Nebraska today at the last minute for the last days of the season there. I was disappointed I couldn't join them, that would of been fun.

Hopefully Eyehead is holding out for the last minute to keep it interesting, when is the dead line?

Oh yeah, learned many things, mostly what NOT to do. Am planning a post as soon as I have some time.

Eyehead put his registration form on the submission thread and said the rest of his photos were here. Don't see them yet. Hopefully soon. I believe tomorrow (Sunday) is the deadline.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
