i have to ask what u do with the carp after u catch them. do u throw them back or just throw them in the weeds being that they are rough fish? or do u take them home and smoke them?

Any fish that is caugth and will not be utilized be immediately returned alive back into the water. A person cannot wantonly waste a fish that is caught by leaving it or any usable portion on the ice, thrown up on the bank, or intentionally killing it and returning it back into the water unless authorized.

Would anyone be interested in getting together to fish carp?

You and a whole bunch of others waiting for late August '09! See you on Volney.

Look for details regarding this particular FM/HSO Get-Together early July.

I'll be down there on wednesday, any updates on water temp or the silver run? And just to be sure, there is a playground at the park, correct? My wife and daughter will be with and that was my clincher to get them to come along, so I defintely don't want to be wrong about it.

Good. Gonna be a nice day too, hopefully the silvers cooperate. Definitely bringing oatmeal for insurance though wink

The Cannon river is down. At this time the small Largemouth Bass and Some small Walleyes are in the area. Crappie minnows on a #6 Aberdeen hook will catch just about any fish there. 1/8oz jigs with twister tails will work also.

You were right about the river being way down. I was down there yesterday. The silvers weren't running yet. We caught about 2 dozen little largemouth bass, 1 walleye, and 2 tiny pike. Looking into the river from the bridge there was a huge school of perch (some appeared to be nice jumbos) and small walleye. Couldn't get the perch to bite. Downstream at the king mill dam we caught about 2 dozen small white bass though. Even though they were small, was fun to catch on ultra light tackle. rainbow trout colored mepps spinner tipped with gulp waxie was the key, my wife outfished me and my dad bigtime with that rig. I had silver mepps, my dad had chartreuse (both tipped with gulp), but they liked hers the best. Everyone using bobber and minnows weren't catching anything.

Thanks JB - this is my first spring in the area and I drove by on the way to Ahlman's earlier this week and was surprised by the # of folks there. If the weather is at all decent you can count on me being up there on Monday morning!!!

Went back to king mill dam on friday. Bought a rod/reel for my wife at cabela's so we stopped there to let her test it out. She caught about 30 little silvers, a few tiny largemouths, 1 hammerhandle pike, and a tiny perch. Once again, people with bobbers weren't catching anything. So I definitely had a blast watching my wife outfish everyone. No size once again.

I've never caught any silvers over 8 inches below the king mill dam. I don't think they do get much bigger in that stretch. They don't have much water to roam with the woolen mills dam only about 1 mile downstream. At least at morristown dam (when they run), they're swimming up from cannon lake so you should be able to find some 12 to 15 inchers.

I've never seen white bass in that area before until this year. I'm wondering if the DNR must of stocked it this year, correct me if i'm wrong.

Im not sure about them being naturally in the Cannon river system but they have been in there as long as I know. I would say naturally.

They don't stock them, but there was some planning being done about stocking them in some metro lakes.

I don't know why they wouldn't be native to the cannon, it flows into the mississippi.

I've only fished the cannon in this area for a few years, but have always caught white bass below that dam.

My guess is they are all just that small. There's gotta be a couple bigger ones in there though, someone needs to lay the eggs after all.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
