Marcum lx-5 problem?

I have a new Lx-5 and have been having some trouble getting it to find my lure especially in shallow water, it seems to flicker some and if I do find my lure on the screen it will disappear when you jig it. I have tried different settings and can't seem to get it to work well. Just got back from a few days of late ice fishing and my buddy has a fl-18 and he had no problem with his flasher and he tried my marcum and had the same problem. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong?

Shallow water being 2-4 feet under the ice as in most lakes in Murray county????

Using my LX-5 on Lime lake is impossible. It's just too shallow.

On other local lakes (Shetek, Sarah, Fox, Bloody) it worked fine but I had to turn up the gain higher than I would if I were in deeper water. If you're only in 6 feet of water the cone angle is not very wide.

Yes, check to make sure you don't have the narrow beam turned on.
