Rice Creek, New Brighton

Recommended Posts

I've been going for jogs along Rice Creek the last couple of weeks to scout it out for open water fishing. Has anyone fished it before and what can I expect? I'm assuming suckers, carp, bullheads, and depending on timing, crappies and pike. I'm specifically interested in fishing immediately upstream and downstream of Long Lake.

Has anyone gotten a canoe or small boat upstream of Long Lake? I'm thinking of taking my small duckboat upstream to chase crappies after ice-out. Is this a do-able?

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, you won't find many crappies or pike immediately upstream from Long Lake, even in the spring. As a kid we tried many times, but only got a few bullheads. Just north of the railroad bridge is a silt collection pond that doesnt have much current in it.

The place where you will see carp anglers is near hwy 10 near the Mermaid. People are there by the dozens fishing for carp.

As far as downstream from Long Lake, you can try along the parks, but remember, no fish can run up from the Mississippi because of the dam on Locke Lake in Fridley.

Good Luck

I canoed it last year, saw nothing but carp in there. An awful lot of 2-6 pounders though!

We'll be there. Sounds like it will cool off up there this week so that will slow it down. I was worried about a fast wash out this year.
