There were several fish boated of FL today at the tourney, I don't recall all the sizes, but I think a couple at 47 and 47.5. 3rd place was from FL with two low 40's fish, so it was a decent day!

I went out Sunday on Flake, moved close to 30 fish for the day, multiple blowups on topwaters, but no hooks in any. Lots of lookers, couple went upper 40's, most were low 40's/high 30's though.

If I found good weeds, orange really seemed to bring them out!

Good advice, don't be afraid to downsize to a small bait when you have fish following like that. My personal favorite is a 1/2 oz rattle rap in gold and green or shad. Cast it out and rip it back on the retrieve. Alot of times when there is a fish present that shows interest if you downsize and zip a smaller bait along within 10-15 minutes you'll get a hookup. Many of the fish I catch are on smaller plugs after 1 or 2 follows. You can zip it in hard and fast and work some slight pauses in as it comes back and get some hookups.

I'm thinking of trying a zara spook, maybe the skies would be more willing to hit.

I'd like to do some mid-week late afternoon/evening Muskie fishing on Flake since I am so close.

Which of the 3 lakes give the best shot at Muskies?

Thanks,

FFAL

Gotta agree with JRedig I have caught Ski's on all three lakes, for a long time I favored lake three then that changed to lake 2, last year i really started to dig lake 1...

On a side note, is it true that the Lake Assins used a chemical treatment for weed control out there? I hope not, I would hate to see Forest turn into an Owasso...

The lake association treated a small area of curly leaf pondweed with a herbicide out there this year. I spoke with one of the members the other day and they are going to get the weed harvester up and running probably in the next week and will cut certain areas of the lake throughout July and early August. The herbicide that was used was specifically for CLPW and shouldn't have an effect on the coontail, chara or cabbage areas.

Great thanks for the explanation.

Has anyone noticed any adverse affect on the fish due to the treatment? Bass Musky Walleye and others?

I haven't seen any effects. I'm hoping to get out tonight for a few hours and give it a go and see if I can raise anything. Probably have my littleguy with me so I may end up chasing bass which seems to be he passion.

the weed cutters have been out and running for the last few weeks. They were on the south end of first on monday. I have been struggling to find the muskies the last few times I have been out. any ideas where to find them when the water is pushing 80 degrees. I have always been one to go with shallow 3-10ft w/ spinners but have been experimenting with suicks and depth raiders lately...no luck thus far. Not seeing the follows a was the first 2 weeks of the season..

Went out tonight for a couple hours, traffic was relatively light for a weeknight. Caught alot of pike with the biggest running about 5 lbs. Didn't raise any fish or see any follows tonight. Worked the deepside of the weedlines. Switched to bassing and had a ball as they are on the munch right now.

Maybe next time, how did you do? I'd give myself a rating of "F" for my fishing excursions last weekend. Hardly saw a fish, let alone a muskie.

Nothing for musky, and one little bass for that attempt. I get an "E" for effort.

What's water temp and how's water clarity on forest? Is weeds dying yet? Haven't been out on flake almost 2 weeks. Might hit it this wknd or head over to lake z again.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
