Some of the main landings along the north side aren't looking good but the entry points from the south shores should hold up till the cooler weather this weekend. I haven't run around to see if the 3rd lake landing off north shore is okay but I'd use a bit of caution around anything getting full sun and runoff. I figure thigs should shore up once the cold weather comes back this weekend. Poke around and use caution but a few nights in the teens and low twenties should improve things considerably.

Servo, you should be able to drive anywhere you want out there right now. Wear some creepers on your boots though as it is pretty slick and when your drilling holes the auger wants to spin you around for a change grin I was out On Tuesday and Friday this week and found the sunfish and crappies active in 13' and a few pike as well. The pike are really hammering right now putting on the feedbags to help those eggs develope. I had a three pound fish the other night that had a belly full of eggs, a couple bluegills and perch in its belly and still whacked a shiner for dessert.

Just got in from being blown off the lake. Looked like somebody dropped a car through about halfway across the lake out from the first lake landing. Police and firetrucks were all out assessing the situation. A bit of an eye opener. Even two plus feet of ice isn't enough sometimes. Be careful out there!

I heard a car possibly went through from a friend on the fire department. Hopefully they got out okay. Anyone have an update?

I saw video on one of the local news channels of a small car from Wisconsin that went partially through the ice. According to the report two passengers escaped without harm.

I caught it on the news tonight, It was a small honda civic and the right side went in. The fire department said that there was 24 inches of ice right next to the car.

I need to pull a shack off of lake one this Friday but the main landing at the park is in bad shape with deep snow and even some open water. Are there any other access points on lake one that are ok for a truck to pull a shack off through?

How's the ice for travel from lake one through the channel to lake two? Any soft spots through there this year?

Fuzzbient, there is an access just west of the opening of the bay that you can drive on and off comfortably. I can't remember the street name right off the top of my head but the point is prominent right before you get to the bay on the south side. I have pulled my house off there a couple times when the landing in town was sketchy.

Thanks for the advice Tunrevir, I'll check that landing out. Hopefully things will be good out there for driving by Friday. Be nice if it melts down a bit and then freezes hard.

Not a great landing but with the sunshine and such it tends to be firm alot longer then the beach access or others along the north shore of first. It can also be a great jumping off point at first ice.

Took a drive over to the south access on Woodland Dr. and it does look much better than the beach landing. The beach landing looks a little better Today too with the open water freezing up and the snow settling a bit. Wonder if they'll do any plowing for the big event out there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Was out today fishing the first lake in about 12 FOW. Caught 2 9 inch perch and a 12 inch crappie. Perch were active 10-12 am and crappies came in around 3pm. Caught a lot of smaller crappies and perch in the first lake.

Fished Flake 2x this week and there are a ton of small crappies and sunfish starting to stage on the old growth weedlines in 12-14'. Caught sunfish and crappies as fast as I could get my jig down but nothing worth keeping. My next foray will be to the shallow weedlines to try and see if I can find some active sunfish and crappies. I haven't fished shallower then 10' so far but have run into a ton of small fish. I am going to start poking around the staging areas just outside of where the fish spawn and see if I can't connect on some larger fish.

I haven't decided just where to start poking around but I have some spots where the early spring fishing is pretty decent that I am going to poke around a bit. Probably won't get out again till saturday afternoon.

Haha...I'm only kidding. I'm still on my quest to find your hotspots! I have also been only able to find smaller fish, but good numbers in the 16-20ft range. Im gonna try some other spots tonights. only a few weeks left. Any dates planned for the big clean up?

I haven't heard but I'd assume soon. I'll get with the lake association and find out when they are thinking. Spoke with one of the members and they are looking at next weekend as a possibility for a lakewide cleanup effort. I'll post more when I get a firm answer.

Was out today and caught a ton of crappies and perch. I was fishing 12-14 FOW. Kept my limit of crappies with 2 perch. Biggest crappie was 13 inch with a 10.5 and a 9 inch perch.

23-25"s should be fine depending on where you travel. This week things may start to get dicey for driving but with the cold this past weekend you should be fine. I'm switching to wheeler this week foe my travel but I did see some cars out today.

Was out there yesterday seeing a few bigger trucks come by and they didn't fall through so I think traveling is fine. Ice is still plenty thick but like mentioned above it may be skeptical after this warm week.

Was there today and I think were the only people out there. All I can say is WOW!!! Got there from 3-7pm and must of caught atleast or over 100 crappies hole hopping the old holes from last week. Biggest crappie was 10.5 and most were 6-8 inches. A few decent perch here and there with bass, sunnies, dink walleyes, and a fish that never made it up the hole. Fun day to be out and great day to end the season. Oh yeah ice is anywhere from 10-15 depending on holes so be careful if you're going out. Have fun and be safe

I've done my part to lower the lake level by pressure washing my dock all the way up to my upper deck. I figure that lowered Vermilion by at least 1/4" lake-wide....

On the south end...   This week was a great week of walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods.  In addition, saugers, jumbo perch, some monster pike and an occasional crappie in the mix!     There are three fishing techniques being used to score Lake of the Woods gold (walleyes).  First, drifting or slow trolling crawler harnesses.  In a nutshell, using about a 2 ounce weight and a 3-4 foot harness with a spinner, two hooks and a crawler.     A tip for crawler harnesses, hook the dark part or head of the crawler on the front hook.  Try to keep the crawler straight between the two hooks.  Try to leave a few inches of crawler off of your last hook and pinch off the rest.  The walleyes and saugers will still hit it, but you will create more hookups.   The second presentation is a jig and minnow or frozen emerald shiner.  Basically locate fish out on the mud or on structure, anchor up and jig.  If you are amongst fish, they will find you.     The third way walleyes are being caught, and some may be surprised about, is trolling crankbaits.  Some have put on the trolling gear when the walleyes weren't as cooperative or when the fish are spread out.  Lots of success catching good numbers of walleyes and good sized fish.     Lots of fish out over deep mud or deep structure.  The deep mud is holding a lot of walleyes in 21' - 27'.  Electronics will help you mark fish.     There is another shallow water bite still taking place anywhere from 5 - 17'.  Much of the shallow bite has to do with feeding opportunities on various minnow spawns, crawfish and hatches.  Not every walleye is targeting the same prey.  Lots of opportunities.  .   Gold, orange, chartreuse, glow and pink, or a combo of these colors, are a great place to start.   Anglers can keep a combined limit of 6 walleyes and saugers.  Up to 4 can be walleyes.  All walleyes 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28 inches may be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one day's possession.  If you catch a limit, eat some fish and freeze a couple, make sure to count your remaining fish left over for your possession.   On the Rainy River...  With some rain in the area, the river was flowing with a strong current and some debris this past week.  Debris has slowed considerably and water clarity is starting to improve.     Water clarity is important for walleyes, saugers, pike and smallmouth bass.  Sturgeon are much more dialed into scent to find their next meal, consequently, when the sturgeon season opens again on July 1st for the keep season, things should be good.   The fishing happening on the river is focused in areas just out of the current.  Most fish will hang just off, able to grab a passing meal but not having to expend too much energy.  Current can be good as it focuses fish in areas.   Jigging with a minnow is effective when you are on fish.  Otherwise, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits along shoreline breaks against the current in 6 - 12' of water is producing a mixed bag of walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass and an occasional crappie.  Up at the NW Angle...  Fishing for a variety of species has been excellent and is in full summer swing up at the Angle.   For those fishing out of the NW Angle, both the Minnesota and Ontario waters of Lake of the Woods are producing a number of nice walleyes.  Many fish have slid off onto deeper structure.  With that said, there are so many areas of forage on LOW, walleyes will be in numerous spots, some shallow and some deeper, taking advantage of opportunities.  Lots of fish to be had, just go fishing.   Jigging structure has been effective.  When fish are a bit spread out, pulling spinners with crawlers or trolling crankbaits is catching a lot of fish.     In this part of the lake, expect to catch walleyes, saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, pike and smallmouth bass.   Muskie anglers are after it and reporting good numbers, and in true LOW style, some big fish over the 50 inch mark.  Summer patterns are starting to take hold, but fish are holding in a variety of areas still.

We got .5” last night. Hasn’t affected the lake level yet. It’s been steady the past three days here (Frazer Bay). RLG

Water Levels I believe are now at a record high with all the rain last week, and more fell last night.  I hope it stops raining soon for all the people who have businesses and live in the area.  Water can do so much damage.

MarkB, Where did you find the perch?  I would love to get into some of those.  MarkB are you fishing more on the east or west end?

Where are the water temps now with all the rain?  Coming up for a week on Friday and want to see what I can find out.  I have had a very poor fishing so far this year.  New to the area and just can't figure it out.  Home is on the west end of big bay.
