I checked with a firefighter, it was someone on lake #2 trying to plow a rink for hockey. Broke through in about 2 feet of water neer shore.

Sounds like a lot of the lakes are really slow right now. There's fish out there but they're really making me work for them. Maybe with this storm blowing in the bite will pick up.

Was out yesterday in the lake2-3 channel. Had the porty set up on 11+ inches and less than 50 ft away had the tip up on 5.5". A little unnerving. Lots of perms out there and plenty of ATV and sled traffic. We had 3 flags and one 24" pike. Too many to count; bluegills and perch went back down the hole.

Fuzz,

Saw the shack yesterday, NICE JOB! We caught a few pike and threw many pannies back down the hole. Not much to show for 4 hours of fishing. Good luck!

There are pockets of slush underneath the snow and travel by wheeler is pretty difficult. Saw alot of sleds running around on the lake and the slush didn't appear to affect them as much. Walking is probably the next best mode of transportaion next to a sled. Ice is in the 7-10" range in most places.

Tunrevir I am planning to take a few kids that have never been ice fishing before to Forest Lake this afternoon. Are there any general locations particularly on the #3 that you would recommend for some consistent action from small bluegills to keep them interested?

Thanks

The second lake side of the narrows off willow in 11-14' can give you some decent action for small panfish. If you venture to the deep hole on second just west of willow point you can get into some crappies in the 30' range. Just look for the permanent shacks over that hole. The other deep hole on second going off the Ideal access is a bit farther walk but you can catch crappies there all day long with an occassional larger one thrown in for some fun. Poke around from 25' out into 35'. Often they are suspended up 4-5 feet off the bottom and easy to spot with electronics. Small spoons with minnow heads, waxies, plastics, euro's and crappie minnow bobber rigs can all produce. Good luck!

53orbigger,

How did it go yesterday? Did you get out? I'm hoping this little cold snap will firm things up today. Hoping to get out tonight!

We did get out for a few hours yesterday on the 3rd lake. We caught a couple of dozen small pumpkinseeds and 1 crappie in about 8 feet of water. Tried some deeper water, but couldn't get anything going.

I was surprised that the lake had firmed up as much as it had as it hasn't really been that cold. Of course anywhere that was packed down by snowmobiles or 4-wheelers was frozen, but even getting off of the packed snow we only found 1 small area that had any slush. And for those that are interested I measured a hair over 12" of solid ice under the frozen slush in the 2 spots that I checked.

Good luck tonight.

Went for a quick outing on the sled. Didnt find any slush, it was all frozen that i could tell. VERY bumpy though, and i would imagine slippery. Lots of people on willow point, parking lot full, and parked on the lake. One car was half way out-will be just a day or two before they are driving. Personally i shall not, but that is just me. Third lake didnt seem as busy.

I fired up the four wheeler for the first time in months and brought the dog down to the lake. Found some slushy areas but it is getting a bit more solid out there. Hoping to get out tomorrow.

Me and a friend went out yesterday for a few hours and put out some tipups. I forgot my GPS and my vexilar and it was to cold to ride back to the house and get it. We were setup on the southwest side of lake three in about 6ft of water. Had 2 flags in 2 hours and we decided to call it a day. Didn't get either fish but it was fun just being out.

What type of ice thicknesses are you guys seeing out on the main lake areas? I haven't been out for the past week and was thinking it might be time to move the permanent out onto the lake finally. Thanks!

Tunrevir, honestly I saw 8 inches on new years eve on the south west side of lake 3. A guy driving a white dodge ram drove out and I had to do a double take and think to myself NO WAY LOL!

I think with the cold we have had it is probably safe to say driving might be an option now, but I would still be leary.

Thanks for the reply ECC! I'll probably go out and scout with the porty and check the ice thickness tonight then and if it is decent put the perm out this weekend.

I might venture out with the portable as well maybe Friday and Saturday. Hopefully I can find some Walleyes and Crappies away from everyone else.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
