Yep May 2 being a boarder water that water becomes federal waters and seasons are recognised by the state that has the earlier opener from my understanding.

It seems we go through this every year. It will always be the first saturday in May as that is when the Wisconsin opener is. We get a jump on you guys so they at least let you fish the river at the same time. And please don't start the can i fish on the other states side of the river [PoorWordUsage] either. J/K

I guess i'm a little irretable as i'm low on sleep due to my new little fishin' partner keeping me awake at night.

I primarily chase cats so I have a continuous St Croix season. I've been on the water every year right after ice out chasing catfish. The conditions are usually not the best for a lot of fish but it sure feels good to get on the water. I'm going to break the code on those early season cats this year - I know they are there it is just a matter of figuring out how to trigger them.

For those of you waiting and waiting for the regular season opener you may be missing some good action for white bass. As soon as that warm sun starts heating the water you can usually find a good silver bite. It is a great way to shake out the boat and all your gear that has been put away for the winter.

Normal St Croix ice out is about the second week of April or so. I've put in at Beanies some years around the 1st of April and fished the Hudson Narrows and the Swing Bridge. Some years you cannot wait any longer to get on the St Croix.

Boy, this year winter sure seems like forever.

The St. Louis has many special regulations. I believe it is considered "Trophy Water" or some such term.

I was thinking about hitting the croix in april for some silver bass action. I normally go the vermillion with great success, but the more silver bass waters the better! smile How is the stillwater area?

The white bass action can be pretty good around Stillwater and upstream depending on the weather. That early spring fishing can be tough sometimes especially if we have high water. What is nice about silvers is that you can still find them even when the water is high.

I've actually had my best luck during high water (in the spring)...they really flock to the flooded trees then. Pretty fun fishing in that stuff too.

2 1/2 months till soft water fishing. Sounds like the dog days of winter has set in. The Croix will now always open up the first Saturday in May. If MN or WI opened up the season on the Croix early, the other state technically could not fish it. Bureaucracy at its finest. WI and MN DNR didn't talk to each other for many years. Going to miss the April openers.

From 2 to 5 to 7?  What started as 2 fishermen Tylor and John last week. Wednesday Bill and Hays spent the night and walked out with not much luck. All though Bill is a photographer  and said he never wet a line as he snapped pic after pic of the sunset. I caught the tail end of it and should of snapped a picture myself, as it was spectacular to say the least.  Not even sure there's a name for the color,  maybe blood red? Thursday morning hays was not feeling very well so Bill went out on his own. Down at the lake working I saw 5 fishermen counting Bill. Yesterday it was up tp 7. I have had a dozen calls, how thick is the ice,  how's the fishing? Buddy Hillmen of Hillmens resort says around 5 inches, They are  allowing  walking traffic out to a mile where his road stakes stop.  I have heard of 5 fish caught and 1 lost at the hole so that's the fishing report.  Some one said it would be a zoo up here this weekend since the south end had that strong wind . I would have to disagree  as I have no one spending the night here until after thanksgiving? All the house are prepped down at the lake and ready to go other then a few little things. If anyone stays down there they will have to be cleaned again but that's fine with me.  Jonny boy did not get out as he was a little under the weather.  I did get a shot at a grouse with my recurve going out to my stand Thursday night. It was a shot through the brush and my arrow just missed. I 'll always give up being quiet when I have a chance at a grouse, either when I'm going, sitting or leaving my hunting area.  Years ago I took a grouse in the air with my recurve and flu flu arrow. I would love a repeat of that. Plus the hammer loves the way I make grouse as do I.  I was going to pull my deer stand but now have second thoughts . Some venison in the freezer would be nice. I like cutting up steak in super thin pieces then quick frying for a minute steak sandwich. Plus I'm still trying to harvest a deer with my recurve

There are people out ice fishing please use extreme caution!! Beaver runs can keep the ice thinner in a narrow area. Fish can cause thinner spots as well. I think I will check two early ice lakes today.

I know a lake around my area that has ice anglers on it and it normally has the first Spearers as well, but I did not see a shack on the ice yet

I was out in the west metro, found a nice solid 3.75 in a shallow backwater type area I checked, but the main lake was too thin still.  Got one small sunny in 5 ft of water, it counts!  Thats the earliest in the season I have ever pulled a fish out a hole. Few more days for the locked up lakes I think,

bump give ice reports if you can. just don't go on any ice to give a report, be safe.   I know my 300 acre lake in aitkin froze  over last weekend, but ice depth could vary greatly this time of year.
    • Fishing Frenzy
Anyone know of the lake is froze over? Or how much ice is on the lake if it is?

I’ll be out looking tomorrow... Have a spot in mind that I’m optimistic about. Which direction from downtown were you?

Got the hangers today and really like them. I did have to drill a slot so they would work but easy peasy. The metal can be bent a bit to get the angle wanted. Moved the turkey fans to a different room and centered the 3 euros. I like the way it ended up.     New Age Taxidermy Head Honcho European Mounts on Amazon Smile

The holidays are coming to the Governor’s Residence! Foresters from the Department of Natural Resources and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota harvested the official state Christmas tree Nov. 16 from the Nemadji State Forest. The tree, which is approximately 60 years old, will decorate the Governor’s Residence in St. Paul. “This year’s tree is absolutely gorgeous—tall, full, and almost perfectly shaped,” said Jean Mouelle, the DNR forester who selected this year’s tree. “It’s an impressive example of a balsam fir.” Each year, DNR staff chooses the Governor’s Christmas tree from one of Minnesota’s 59 state forests. Although the tree is always harvested on the Friday before Thanksgiving, the search for the perfect tree begins months beforehand. DNR foresters keep an eye out for a tall tree that’s nicely shaped and well filled out. The tree also needs to be in a location where it will not be damaged when dropped, and where foresters can easily remove it from the forest and load it onto a trailer. The tree will be set up at the Governor’s Residence, 1006 Summit Ave., St. Paul, at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, and lit Monday, Nov. 26. Information about viewing the tree can be found at www.mn.gov/admin/governors-residence/tours/schedule. Half a million Christmas trees are harvested from private tree farms in Minnesota each holiday season, contributing about $30 million to the state’s economy. For each tree harvested, one to three trees are planted. Real Christmas trees provide an environmentally friendly decorating option during the holidays because they store carbon during their lifespan and can be chipped for mulch when the season is over. Should get the hangers today and will post info. I see that mountain Mikes has them also. Built to fit in the hole in back. The ones I ordered are for the bone skull so hopefully, dont have to send them back. Just got Marks done.  16 inch inside. Mine is 15 1/4. Not monsters but pretty neat. Marks biggest so far.
