I'll second that question...

I have a nextel phone with sprint service and I loose signal somewhere around Northome and have not been able to get a signal on my phone any of the 3 times up there.

Please do share if there is a trick...i have mine set on "Automatic", with the other choices being sprint only and roaming only. I have a IC902 phone by motorola.

Being with out a phone is ok, but would be nice to have a safety in case of problems. I usually have to go to the gas station to use the pay phone to check messages.

I checked my phone and it was set to sprint only towers, I switched it to automatic. We will see if it works next time I am up.

I just spoke with a cust service rep from AT&T and he said that if Verizon has service that my phone should be able to pick up that tower and use it. I stated that my Razor would not and neither would my buddy who also has AT&T. His only response was "did you turn it on and off? Well, I don't know, it should work" mad Thanks for nothing.

I'm bringing my father and uncle up in two weeks and would like to be able to contact the outfitter and also for emergency uses. Hopefully I won't need either.

The ic902 is a hybrid handset, digital only. So it won't roam onto the analog towers in the area, I use an ic902 as my primary handset but also have a sanyo pro700 as a backup. My Pro700 works where the GF's AT&T handset won't.

Nextel doesn't have towers in the area and won't roam to anything other then Nextel.

Been fixing Nextels for years and sprint since the merger.

So any other questions I'll be happy to answer just post in the Equipment forum and I'll get back to you.

Not to be a sour lemon but what irks me the most is cell phone use on water. I see people using it frequently and hear it ringing, I mean yeah if its for emergency use sure by all means,I carry 1 too but for that use only. For me i dont turn it on due to the fact im on vacation and dont need the distration of work, friends etc. I realize its the 21st century and times are changing but sheesh lets keep in mind we are there to fish n hunt or whatever it may be , and I wont even get started on the internet thing lol. Now on a side note my provider is t-mobile and no it doesnt work well or atleast when i turned it on the time or 2 to ck,anywho... good luck

If someone gets hurt, or if your propane runs out in the middle of the night and its -30 below and your vehicle won't start. Tell me how important it would be to you to have cell phone coverage? I'm not asking because I want to keep in touch with the buddies, or find out what the wife is having for dinner back home, I just want to have it when I need it.

Off topic but if you ever have an emergency without a working cel phone turn your vehicle flashers on. Everyone working on Hillman's road watches for that.

Good to know. Thanks Kelly. Our last trip was -40 below a few weeks ago, and none of us had cell coverage, and none of our vehicles would start, but your house was nice and warm, and the fish didn't seem to care.

Wow that would be annoying. I don't know where you fish but where I go I haven't had that problem yet.

Verizon was the only one that worked for us. We had all the big ones (Sprint, TMobile, At&T and Verzion) and only the verizon phones had coverage.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
