Tom Powers: Minnesota Vikings one dynamic quarterback from glory; enter Brett Favre

Enjoy the Super Bowl? Wish the Vikings had been playing? Hang on. That might be closer than you think. Consider the following:

The New York Jets are about $13 million over the salary cap. Coincidentally, quarterback Brett Favre makes about $13 million a season.

Favre, 39, decided to skip the Pro Bowl because of the biceps injury to his throwing arm. If he were going to retire, wouldn't he go to Hawaii and take a few bows at the end of his career? Instead, he appears concerned about further injury. That makes it look as if he's not through yet.

If the Jets release Favre, the poison pill inserted by the Green Bay Packers disappears. That means he could sign anywhere he wants to with no compensation to any team.

Favre might have been the league's most valuable player if he hadn't suffered that arm problem during the final month. He took over an awful Jets team — 4-12 — and had it 8-3 before the injury. That was a remarkable accomplishment. The Jets still finished 9-7.

The best that can be said about Vikings quarterbacks in 2008 is that they were adequate. Sorry, that's not good enough. Meanwhile the team isn't getting any younger. A lot of players are at their peak. It's time to rock and roll.

Favre wants to play here. Or let's put it this way: He wanted to play here last season. The Vikings are a lot closer to a Super Bowl than the Jets. If he still wants to play, and he hasn't said for sure, it's fair to assume he'd still like to come here. The Jets need to rebuild.

The last time, a lot of people were sure the Vikings wound never sign Favre. But it turned out to be closer to reality than many thought. The Packers were scared to death of that, however, and took extraordinary measures to prevent it.

It's still a good idea. We'll call it, "Favre II: Return to the Tundra." Television blackouts are not likely come September.

Don't think of Favre as the guy throwing all those interceptions during the last month of the season. Instead, recall the miraculous job he did before the biceps injury, which caused him to lose arm strength.

So then the Vikings draft a lineman or two to further protect their new quarterback, which they needed to do anyway, and they're in business. Look out, Super Bowl!

Anybody really want to go through another season with "adequate" quarterbacks? Even if Favre isn't quite what he was, he's better than what's currently available on the Vikings' roster. A dynamic quarterback remains the missing piece. The main one, at least. A couple of holes are showing on the offensive line. There might be a crack or two appearing in the secondary, too. This further illustrates that time is growing short.

You saw what Donovan McNabb did to the Vikings in the playoff game. A top quarterback can make all the difference. Besides, it looks as if the Vikings are about ready to start over at that position. Tarvaris Jackson still hasn't done it. Gus Frerotte was benched for the playoff game.

Look, do you want to build for some future run at a title or do you want to win right now? The Vikings build every year. They've never won a title. Besides, the two aren't mutually exclusive. Signing Favre won't compromise their future. What would it hinder, more development time for Jackson? Geez, he's already had years.

The consensus appears to be that the Jets don't really want Favre back. They need to start over. Favre supposedly will meet with the team's executives this week. I'll bet he says he isn't sure what he's going to do in 2009, but still asks for his release.

This is Minnesota's chance. The Vikings have a good core, but they could have just one real shot at a title before they have to start replacing some of the pieces that are wearing out.

And if nothing else, think of how much fun it would be to have Favre at quarterback. Think of the entertainment value. The buzz would shake the Twin Cities.

It won't take $13 million to sign him. Not if he wants to win. The Vikings have money, anyway. This could be great fun. I hope they go for it.

LMAO! WOW, you packer haters are sure quick to glorify ole Bret as soon as you have a chance to put him on YOUR team. I loved the guy, he played the game the way every player should play it. But alas, he is done, his best years are certainly behind him and I am glad he was wearing the green and gold for them. Its time for him to retire....again. Hey, maybe you can get John Elway....heck, maybe Marino wants to play.

Any QB in the league right now is better then what the queens have. They should go for it!!!! There isnt one person out there that doesnt like watching Brett Favre.

I cant stand the Vikes, but if they had Brett I would actually watch a vikings game. And by the way, I would buy a number 4 MN jersey too!!!!

I would like to see him play here, but the Vikes are more than a quarterback away from glory. Not one receiver on the squad makes either of those late game TD catches that were made in the Superbowl. If they want to compete and possibly win a Super Bowl, they are going to need a Fitzgerald caliber receiver to go along with that QB.

Berrian gots game! He made a few big plays this year. We really need someone to compliment him on the other side though.

Berrian might suprise you dtro with the right QB chuckin' the rock to him. I would like to see a high caliber receiver her to be the number one guy and Barrian be the 2nd. I think that would be ideal. Need to shore up the O-line a little too. I just really don't wanna see Favre here. I'd still watch and cheer for the punk if he came cause I love the purple, but I don't wanna see him in it.

Berrian and Rice could make those plays IF they actually had someone to get them the ball. You hit Berrian in stride and he opens up a wider margin than Fitz had when he went in. Rice is a much bigger receiver than Holmes and he would have made that catch in the corner look alot easier than the smaller Holmes. Bottom line is we don't have anyone to make the throws that made these catches possible.

I think if the QB's throwing the ball were better, if would make the receivers look better.

Please no! The guy is done and a selfish arrogant so and so, IMO. Again got the NYJ with his contract and he is going to milk out the whole will I retire or won't I. The whole last 5 games and his record of 1-4 also is a crock. The one win he did everything to choke that away it was a dumbarse call on Buffalo or whoever to roll out their QB, who fumbled and the NYJ D won the game.

Berrian alone can't get the job done and just by adding Farve won't earn us a trip to the S-Bowl let alone play-offs.

They hinted around Sunday that Warner is seriously considering retirement otherwise he, IMO, would be a better choice than Farve. McNabb would be a better choice for the Vikes than Farve.

Farve at best gives the Vikes 1 year. 1 year that the Vikes will be set back and forced to rebuild.....AGAIN. It takes more than one year for a QB to gel with the rest of the offense. Warner, McNabb and dare I say...........Tom Brady would give the Vikes more than one year of service.

How will we be set back. We can give tjack another year to learn or draft a qb to learn behind favre for a year.

Warner will not come here. Just plain old foolish wishful thinking. McNabb won't get traded either. It's tjack, booty, and a draft pick battling it out. Outside possibility of Losman coming in to the mix as well. Forget about Warner and McNabb! It aint happenin!

How will we be set back.

Farve has 1 year at best and we're left with Jackson who Childress gave up on early in the season until he needed him the most. Let the guy take his hits throughout an entire season and he'll be playing to his potential. Jackson still doesn't have the big game experience yet and until Childress gives Jackson the full season committment, he'll continue to be a "good" backup QB.

Jackson will learn more with time on the field, which this year he didn't get enough of IMO. How much is Leinert learning sitting on the AZ sidelines? wink

No, No, NO!!!! You're all wrong Zamboni, I don't wanna see him around here or even get a wif of him in the city. I still can't get the stench off from the last time he was playing in town.

Get him here to help teach T-jack for a year? Are you kidding me? You could give that kid ten years with Favre, Marino, Elway and Montana and you still come out with Junk. Two good games a year maybe and that's if all the cards fall right.

Warner wants to stay in AZ or he'll retire. He said he has no interest in moving his family around.

There has to be some out there in FA that we can pick up this year. Brady would be a beast here, but I don't see him being let go.

McNabb would be great, but after getting to the NFC championship game, I doubt they'll get rid of him.

I heard from a media source that the Vikes may try to deal for Cassell. Chester Taylors name was brought up along with draft picks. They would have to get the deal done before he lands the franchise tag.

I could live with Cassell for Taylor.

Cassell had one good year. If he had at least one more under his belt, I'd be ok with the deal. But I'd be confident enough with Taylor's ability that he could command a pretty good price.

In the 1970's the Red Lakes went into a 4 year "boom/bust" cycle. Only 1 good year class at a time. That year class would get big enough to spawn then be caught out of the lake. The fry from that year class would be the only strong year class in the lake so they would grow rapidly then spawn and be caught out repeating the cycle. By the late 70's it was well known that there was a very good chance that the Red Lakes walleyes would collapse.  Then in the early 90's that year class was caught out before it spawned. The rest is history. Right now there are multiple year class's in the Red Lakes. 18% of the Red Lakes are State waters. For the 2019 harvest season 160,830 pounds of walleyes were harvested from those State waters. for the entire 2019 harvest years 299,377 pounds of walleyes were harvested from the State waters. We, anglers in the State waters are harvesting more then twice as many pounds of walleyes as we did in the 90's. 82% percent of the Red Lakes are Band waters. For the 2019 harvest season the Band harvested 443,148 pounds of walleyes. Less then 1/4 of what they were harvesting in the 90's. Yet you are pointing fingers at the Band?  Show us something then that is more then bar talk and rumors.

So to right a wrong that occured over 200 years ago, we just let them destroy a lake? Because if they take out fish at the rate they did in the early 90s, which as leech pointed out, it is getting close, the lake will get to the point it was at in the late 90s. Like people have said, there was blame to go around, but at the end of the day, in my eyes, having two sets of rules for two sets of people is just counterproductive.

The Ice55 pulls 250mA per its website/spec sheet..  A unit with a big screen like the Ice Helix 7 w/GPS rated at 900mA.

Forest lake #1 has this perfect clear ice. I didn't realize that the lake had actually opened up 80% at some point a week ago or so. It refroze perfect. 3 inches of ice. Didn't walk way out but, a guy that lives there told me it locked up in one day so I figured it must he even. Not fishing on 3". Next weekend we will be good!   Linwood lake was 4". However clear ice with no.snow on it way out there I'm guessing is maybe 3. Not even trying. Going to fish today on ice with snow on it. That's about it....can't wait for next weekend. Should be good everywhere.

Leech,   "In 1989, the tribe's commercial netters  registered a record 948,000 pounds of walleye."   And this years quota was just about back to that of 820,000.  So did they learn anything?   You posted this as if it makes a point but it has no bearing what so ever.  It seams that you're the one that can't seem to learn anything.  Stop using non related information to try to prove a point.  In 1989 the total lbs of fish in the lake may have been 1/100 of what it I this year.  So what if the Indians use it as a commercial fishery.  We took the whole country from the and use it for commercial everything all in the name of greed!  Pull your head out and realize that giving them a piece of water and letting them do with it what they want is a good thing and they are working with us to make it a well sustained fishery  But in order to do that you would have to be selfless for a second so let's not hold our breath waiting.

Did you see that you can buy cheeks too. That's way cheaper then most street corners in Mpls! Walleye Cheeks 3lb – Fresh Frozen $56.85

Fact checker says OK. 😋  You may or may not believe this but I was partially poking the bear too. 😉   Cheaper per pound than going up to fish and limits every time.

I love the FL -18 because you can zoom to the bottom 6' or 12' range (my cousin has one). And I do not remember which model you have multiple Mhz zones to choose from to get rid of interference. Meaning if another guy in the fish house has a FL-8 and the same transducer, you'll get interference. This is especially important when deep water fishing as the signal goes out in all directions, it the receiver (cone) the limits the reception to the cone angle of say 9, 12 or 15 degrees. Another thing some of the models have it so you have 2 (9 & 15 degrees) transducer degree to choose from. And do you want it to do double duty and be able to use it in the summer time too? That should weigh in also then. The FL22 has bottom lock and reportedly by others it is better to get through algae and air bubbles that you may encounter in the summer months. I'd suggest going to a good fishing shop and pick their brains on the differences, and of the brands before you choose a brand and model. Here is what I would do as I sense you are on a budget ($300). Buy a newer USED model of say the FL18 or the FL20. Check Graig's List near where you live. INSIST that you go out on a lake and test it before you buy a used one and that all the features work. Ask for the manual too. BTW, the FL20 has the flat screen, and some say it has more definition. (I have not used one though). Good luck.
