All the fish are biting. Mornings and evenings are best. I have gone out 3 times in the past week since my first report and regardless of wind, rain, or shine, I have caught a good amount of White/Silver Bass (15+ Silver/White with 30+ fish being my best this year...and that is just me, not counting others fishing with me)and everything else the river has to offer. Again, Current trasitioning to deep holes and drop offs are key for Silver/White bass. You can find the Silver/White bass around these areas in 5 - 25 FOW. I mainly fish from the PowerPlant down to Prescott. I plan on going again today and hopefully the bite is still as good as it has been. The bite will only get better as the temps warm up.

Any general section of the croix? Signs to look for?

We were out on Sunday and randomly fished between Hudson and Stillwater targeting Crappie/Whitebass and did not get much action beside a few random sheephead/smallmouth. There were a lot of boats near the swing train bridge, but we did stayed away from there to avoid the crowd.

Whites are going pretty good by railroad bridge. Lots of crowds though especially in evening, tons of boats anchored on both sides of the channel. I see a lot of wally's being caught too frown

Skipped out on getting out early and instead was on the water from about 3:00-8:00,I drove around to the Somerset landing and headed south towards the high bridge area. The fish didnt exactly jump In my boat but did manage 2 17".had very little action on jigs besides sheepys, whiteys and 10" eyes.didnt troll but did pitch cranks towards shore the steady retrieve didint do much,I was getting a little irritated and started ripping and pausing a #5 suspending blue/chrome shad rap,Bingo! the whiteys that had been following started hitting and I caught my 2 keeper eyes this way along with a couple smaller smallmouth.never know what the fish want from one day to the next on the croix, never would have thought being that aggressive would out-do the ol standard early season tactics...

Good fish'n!!

Did Bayport yesterday jigged up 3 sheepies mostly suspended in the warm water discharge and 1 small waldo trolling for my buddy at dark. Today I did Osceola launch. Nothing bit trolling. I did locate pike in shallow backwaters and C&R 3. Nothing big, but fun!

Joined the droves on Sat.. Not much for droves, actually. Started at 4:30 in the morning pitching cranks towards the islands and the points. Nada. Trolled cranks hitting in the 13 ft range. Nada as well. Then we boated one short in the Hudson channel. Saw that the very few fish others boated were getting tossed back so we proceeded upstream towards Bayport in search of some keeper eyes. Tried the point directly across from the warm water discharge canal and landed a nice channel cat while rigging nightcrawlers. Made another pass and NoGo.

Fished the warm water discharge and all we got were sheepies and some other rough fish.

Went back down and rigged minnows and crawlers through the railroad bridge down to the I-94 bridge before we left around 1:30pm. Picked up one whitebass.

Got rained on about 60% of the time. My 1st outing in this area and my 1st opener on the St. Croix. Way better than work!

Did they move up opener this year? Everything I find online shows that opener is this Saturday (May 5). But, I see reports on here with people keeping walleye. Also, with the number of boats out on the Croix, I can't imagine they are fishing for panfish? What's the story?

Opener was not moved up, the Croix always opens the saturday closest to May 1st.

I went out this am and had to park due to the weather coming in. Pea sized hail and torrential downpours for a half hour. Managed a pike and a couple sauger before the storm and then finished out the day with a few nice walleye. Purple descent trolling was the ticket. Couldn't get anything to go on other colors today on the second line.

Great report! I got out at noon and stayed til 4, caught nothing and decided to go to my local lake. I've never had so much fun without paying for parking ect... I quit fishing the Croix! State of 10,000 lakes but this river is not for me. Everyone have a great summer and enjoy! Peace!

Thanks for the report. I will be going out Saturday morning for a bit, hopefully I find some fish. The river is always a fun place to fish, just don't try too hard.

From past experiences, if the actions slow, a few dozon crawlers will get you catching everything/species on the river for some rod bending action.

Fished out of the boomsite on Saturday. Started out with a lot of hits, but then the rain came, and the fishing slowed down big time after that. My 4 year old dropped her pole in the river, and she found a way to sink the landing net too. So of course my dad would hook into a 3 pound smallie and a 27 inch walleye! Luckily I was able to hand grab them. We ended up catching 7 different species.

Sounds like a action packed time jb. Nothing like landing nice fish with your bare hands..

Fished both Wednesday and Thursday - the fishing was not good.

Thursday we fished out of the St. Croix bluffs ramp and fished north to the Kinnie in various spots as well as north of the Kinnie in a couple of other spots. Although we were marking some walleyes (or what I think to be walleyes since they are single fish here and there on breaklines; could be cats or something, but not junk fish since they were single fish) we only hooked into one walleye and that was it all day.

Thursday, I took the boat and launched out of Taylors Falls and fished south...I could county on one hand how many fish we marked. After a few hours of no marks and no fish, I pulled out and put the boat back in the water above the dam in Taylors Falls and fished up there pulling cranks around the islands...that was just as bad....then just drowned my sorrows as The Border Bar...

The water was very high. I will definitely be waiting for it to recede a bit..

Was out today down by prescott, nothing was biting. Was hopping for some walleye but came home empty handed. frown On a side note bait shop down by newport and hasting are close down which suck. Next time I'll remember to buy bait at Gander before heading down.

Yep, a few White Bass, but no Walleye.

Like I said before (Oh sure, some pics show up with some Walleyes), there's A LOT less Walleyes in the St. Croix vs 5-20 years ago. Catch rate is WAY down & rarely see Walleyes caught anymore.

Sad, but true.

The county point located at the Prescott Wisconsin turn on hwy 61 sells huge night crawlers for a reasonable price, and the Freedom gas station in Prescott sells some decent minnows...see ya out there and good luck !

If you're fishing from shore, don't bother heading out to Prescott, this year spring started early so walleyes are long gone when the opener came.

If your shore fishing the Croix for eyes then fish above Hudson to Taylor Falls. Or Pool 4. Prescott has been slow and continue to be slow.

Went out yesterday evening and the white bass were going nuts. Non-stop action until dark. A ways north of the high bridge in a touristy spot. Got one keeper walleye as a bonus.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
