St Cloud Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Made it out with eyeguy today. Or destination was a lake a bit out side of the St.Cloud area.

Fishing was tough, with moments of greatness smile we really had to work for the fish we got. full-26589-44134-20140402_134846.jpg

Here is a nice fatty caught by a dude who does not have grey hair...... although, guess he really does not have any hair left to turn grey. Would show you pics of what I caught, but the jealousy over a lot of gorgeous rock bass would be overwhelming to many....

Nice pics Rick.Might be t-shirts and jeans the rest of the way.

I'm already jealous of the Rock Bass PB. Stick in mud kinda fits that hair description but I don't know. smile

The river has some selective areas where the carp are swimming.Went out to a couple of rivers today from millstream park to Sartell Mississippi.Found a few in the same area that I caught them yesterday.

This time I was out later in Sartell and had more bites.Same #4 offset hook and crawler. Here is a pic taken around 5pm today.Sorry about the carp blood. He wasn't letting me bring him in that easy.

Good one JC. You must of got there after I left. Your right it is a brushy spot, sure needs some trimming. Plenty of action though.

Feeling under the weather the last week or so and haven't even felt like going out, but today I had time for a drive to check lake accesses south of town. Grand looked to be in the best shape, Pleasant Lk you would need a plank or hip boots and Pearl lake would be best with a small flat bottom boat.

Bottom line, I'm ready for some carp lessons Jeremy, that was a good report you put up.

Slow today for carping. No hook in mouth contact.Stick in mud and I had a couple of fin snags. Here's a carp that made it all the way up.

You did better than I did.... Tried to fish a couple spots on the Elk, water was very very high. It was almost unfishable.

Second spot we hit was the Clearwater mill stream close to the Mississippi. We fished up and down the river without so much as a nibble. I think the watet might be a little too cold yet for any numbers of rough fish. It did feel good to get the summer rod back in hand, it's been a long winter smile

It was nice fishing with you today, Jeremy....I'm not sure why we could only hook them in the tail fin, but at least we got to feel some openwater fish tugging on the line. Oh, and the weather wasn't too bad either. smile

I think Pb was right about them running in warmer water.May just have to settle for small pickins for a bit longer.

Walleye-Bummer about your 4 wheel in the ice like that.By the looks of the other photo ,you guys slammed the fish.Enjoy your Meal/Mealzz. cool

I think it's a little early for them to start running up the creeks. Shouldn't be long now, though.

Love the buried wheeler pic. Looks like you were headed out and not in and got rewarded for some hard work....nice job! But, yeah, it is coming to a close......weather this weekend do not look good for the roughish critters and now flipping a coin as wether to give the ice one last go or head south for some trout.

After getting the wheeler off I was going to head home but my son had other plans and convinced me to walk out. Had a fun afternoon.

Lots of bites today. Completely landed two carp and a walleye.Released all back in the river. The area I'm in is down to a one man spot because of the rise of the water level.I lost alot of hooks and slipshots in all the sticks and brush in the river this time. This is normal for this spot when the water rises.Had a lot of fun smile

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
