Went and punched some holes on Mayhew tonight. Seen some on the vex and also seen some traffic out there a few houses and a few spear houses in the shallows. looks like people have been fishing it this year. My best luck on that lake is early morning or late evening. Not a bite tonite, but had a few lookers and pulls.

Jeremy, crappies are still biting pretty good on the Chain. Even as tough as it was yesterday we still had a pretty good outing for them.

Fish were very active today for me, enjoyed the last day of 2013 ice season. The northern pulled down my new St Croix rod and bit my dead stick and brought my pole back up to me. Best gift ever smile

Nice fish! Had a pretty good morning myself. 60+ crappies caught and released between my girlfriend's dad and myself. Brought out the house and never used it… They're on the move.

Went to Big Watab this evening and didn't find crappies but ran in to "7-8" gills instead in 15'.Pounding away with pink plastics and wax worms I was and the gills seemed to want aggressive fishing. Finally I decided to keep some for a meal for another night.Nice thing about fishing the last two nights is the lack of wind.full-45395-40935-imag0587.jpg

Got out for a little while today, got those first fish of the new year out of the way full-26589-40936-002.jpg

Numbers were easy to come by, size was an issue in the couple spots where we found fish. Some of the crappies were pretty aggressive full-26589-40938-003.jpg They were hitting just about everything we threw at them.

Around prime time decided to hit one final spot, a small shallow rock hump to see if any walleyes wanted to play, they were down there, just not willing to bite. full-26589-40939-001.jpg

Sorry about the poor quality pic, cheep cell phone, bad photographer, big thumbs smile wanted to get it back in the water b4 the gills froze.

Awesome Rick you are right the crappies were on fire out there today iced easily 100 plus fish. We found and scored on them in the back after you guys left but size was similar to what we were discussing. Tore the ice up in that area never did locate the big gills on that breakline. Funny coincidence I was telling you that I iced about a 8 lb pike today and whamo you go and catch a dsndy! Great bite today considering the conditions it was a little chilly out but the fish cooperated! grin Nice to run into you guys again!

I got a start on the new year at little rock or what I like to call it "tiny boulder" and picked off a few crappies for the pan. full-46894-40949-093.jpg

BigNick-Did you drive from the north access .Just wondering if a lone soul can make it to the deeper with a medium sized truck.

Went on at the NW access,105th or west lake road I'm pretty sure. There is a plowed road that goes out to the right and I fished in 15' FOW you shouldn't have any trouble getting to where ever you want. I know there is also a plowed road that runs from erdmanns point all the way across the whole east side of lake to benton beach. Nice gills you got at watab Did you hit the first Island off to the right or Public access? I plan to hit that on Saturday. Is there a plowed road running out to it?

There is a fresh plowed way going from the access to what seems to be on the edge of the island. There were some older plowed areas going north/south but I dont know how easy it is to drive on.I seen mostly spear houses to the right of the access. Two houses on the south west bar and a lone wolf hugging the island. cool Nice line of fish by the way! grin

You must have brought me Pike luck smile like I was telling you, I haven't gotten one in like two years while ice fishing crazy and then this, at least it was big. My only regret is letting Bubs take the pic smile he couldn't have messed it up more if he tried wink

Tom, I got that on walleye gear smile 4lb floro 1/8 buckshot. Thought it was a giant walleye or a big cat from the mark on the vex.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
