I'm going to hit some lakes on sat, do you think the Ice should be good???? also anyone have any suggestion???? I was going to Hit Auchman or pleasant or maybe some lakes by st. Johns for pannies and crappies. anything hitting out there???

7-8 below tonight, 15 below Fri night, I would think by sat you will be fine. I have heard that a mix of gills and crappies can be caught around the first point on Pleasant.

was out tonight on long, lost my dead stick setup, its cheap so who ever finds it hope it treats you well.

Anyway got a couple bites there maybe 6-8 inches of ice. the went over to the briggs chain. Elk had frozen slush over ice measuring almost a foot. Who knows how strong it is did a lot of cracking so I wouldn't be pushing my luck. Got one nice walleye love first ice !!!

Big Nick- Achmans last week was not real strong for myself and other Ice fishermen I talked to.A lot of little perch and very few and very small panfish.

Have the gills got any bigger out there? Used to fish that exact spot quite a bit but havent in years. a guy could get some nice crappies but the sunfish seemed to be stunted with nothing over about 6 inches

I've never been to the Briggs chain before. I was thinking about heading out there tomorrow. Is the ice thick enough for a atv? Is there anywhere local to get bait?

The hardware store in Palmer always has a ton of bait plus very cheap prices on one pounders of propane. 3.49 i believe. good place to support. as for wheeler traffic ive seen a few on elk but don't know about briggs lake itself.

Went out to a lake near Kimball today. Drilled 30+ holes from out infront of the access to where the normal shanty town is as it didn't look like anyone had been out since we got the snow.

Took a first timer out that lost one at the hole but other than that was skunked. Pretty slow, only marked a couple fish. 2 guys came out around 3:30 and couldn't get their auger started. Hopefully they found something in some of the holes I drilled.

6-9 inches of ice.

went out and hit little rock. the ice was good, marked a few, but nothing for the ice, pretty dead out there. I seen a few people out and no one got anything but a couple of perch. seen some ATVs and one or two small permanent houses out there.pulled them out with ATVs and seen one of the bigger cubs or whatever they are. Had a good time never-the-less. Maybe get out more on Sunday after church. You all have a blessed night... peace Big Nick Grbich

I was surprised to see a car on the ice last night but then I measured 12 inches of ice. It seems fish on this lake only bite during that twilight period. Well most activity is at that time. full-44005-40129-image.jpg

What is your buddy catching? Heading to Osakis tomorrow, chasing the walters. The crappies are pretty easy to find there this year.

He limited out on crappies. We also would love to chase down mr walter. I don't know the lake very well, so if you got any tips it will be nice. hope I see some nice photos posted after tomorrow.

Grand has 10-11 inches of ice. The fishing has been marginal a few walleys being caught not a lot of numbers but a gd average size of around 17 inches.

Has anyone been out on Pearl or Grand lake yet? Just curious on how thick the ice is around there.

Was on grand on Sunday. Only a few other anglers in portable houses. Probably 20 spear houses. 10 inches of ice. We only caught a couple perch. We drilled 50+ holes searching for pan fish.

The weekend of December 7 and 8 we had a decent walleye bite. Cold front last weekend all but shut the bite down for us. We caught 2 smallish eyes and we had some rather non-committed fish (pull the bobber down just under the ice and spit the minnow). I thinking this weekend should be better, I hope.

      If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

      Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

      I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

      On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

      Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣
