Hey Dan, the fall bite is on. the park rapids tennis assoc. fishing tourney on Fishhook lake was Saturday, and the bite was on. the winning team caught 3 northerns, 6 bass and 6 walleyes. 40 lbs of fish, lots of fish caught. Long is cranking out lots of big northerns too. Fall is the best time to fish, the fish get a little stupid. better get over here.

Hi everyone!

If anybody is still out fishing walleyes, I was hoping for a little info. I am heading up for the weekend to do some hunting with family, but I plan on bringing the boat along. I want to try for some eyes and was wondering what has been working and what has been the location of these fish during the daytime. The lake I fish is a clear lake and I would expect to fish the deep breaklines, but was wondering what others are doing?

Any tips would be great!

I'd like to get a thread going about chasing walleyes in Park Rapids. I myself don't fish the area currently but would like to start this winter. My experience with these deep cold lakes is that you typically have walleyes relating to classic mid-lake structure and you really have to focus on low/no light conditions. I'm wondering if you all have had a similar experience in the area. Do you find your walleyes on mid-lake humps during the ice season, or do you find more fish relating to shorline structure? Anyone fish weedlines for walleyes? Have you found these lakes to have a good winter night walleye bite on the same structures you're fishing morning and evening?

Thanks guys,

Lindy

WOW. Alot of views but nobody wants to discuss? Lindyman I don't fish the Park Rapids area but I'll try to help you out. I fish in the Grand Rapids area on deep clear lakes in the winter and yes, the fish do seem to relate to mid lake structure and the only productive times I have been able to find are basically that magic hour which consists of 30 minutes either side of sunrise or sunset. Personally I have not had much success at all later into the night (which suprises me) or during the day on these clear lakes as this seems to be a strict rule for me. Not much, but like I said I don't fish the PR area, hopefully that helps you out a little. It would be nice to hear other's opinions on spots and times, I'm sure it varies so much from lake to lake. Good luck!

Hey Lindyman-

I have a cabin up in PR and started chasin' the ol' marble eye in the area a couple years ago. Most of my experience is around Christmas Break as I'm still in college. However, I have had most of my luck fishing mid-lake structure such as humps, saddles, ect. That being said, there are a few pieces of shoreline structure I like key in on. #1 Anywhere there is deep water nearby and the fish come up to a 'reef' or a big flat. #2 Points...Enough said. #3 Inside turns. Fish love these, make sure you don't overlook them.

I really don't have much experience fishing weedlines but I've got to imagine these are good magnets for fish. Since the lakes are so clear these weedlines extend quite a ways out in the summer and if they don't die off they should hold fish.

Night bite...This is a different beast. Some spots I've caught fish an hour or two after dark. Others spots it seems that 1 magic hour they bite and then its donzo.

If you have any other questions or want some specifics send a PM.

I also have a cabin in PR and my experience has been similar to everyone else's. The night bite for me has been surprisingly non-existant on the lakes I have fished. Potato for example has been basically a "magic hour" lake for me the past few years.

As for weed lines, I have had some success early season, then late season the mid-lake humps are the place to be.

I went out Last night and caught some crappies, som e nice ones at that too. does anyone have some tips on where to find the walleyes?

Posted

Thanks for the feedback. I think we'll try out Potato for the first trip out. Anyone know if there's usualy a decent road out there?

Koepper08, tried sending a PM but having trouble for some reason. Could you send me a message, maybe it will let me reply. I get an error that says "you have reached your quota for maximum PM participants". Anyone know why that is?

Could anyone comment on lake conditions in the PR area currently. Doesn't sound like there's much for roads. Is slush a major problem? We're headed up this weekend and don't have a sled, hoping for a few plowed ice roads.

Still tough to get around this last weekend. We were on a lake up close to Lake George on Saturday and buried all atvs coming off at dark. We were on a froze up snowmobile track going on the lake and then it warmed up during the afternoon. 3 ATV's buried in about 3+ feet of snow. It has been and will be warm though Thursday so that might help settle some snow and make it easier to travel but no plowed roads except on Fishhook that I know of. Good Luck and be safe! We already had one death going through the ice this year...very sad!

How is the ice, or hopefully lack there of, looking up there? My gear is ready for the year, Im ready to drop the dock in, get the boat out and find some fishes!

Thanks guys!

Now we're talking. College hockey ended, it's time to think happy fishing thoughts. I'm wondering also and haven't been up to the area since late October. I see on the Ten Mile webcam the snow has at least melted within the last 2 days. Ice looks plenty thick still.

Don't get too excited, looks like the ice will be around for a little while yet. I've seen a few out on the ice fishing still. I'm expecting ice out around the 20th on lots of the lakes.

I agree, I was on Little Sand last weekend and the shores are pulling away but I give it a week or so til complete ice out.

Thanks guys! I will check back in in a couple weeks and see where we are at! I can see my bobber going down now, and I can feel my shiner and jig getting smacked! I just got a chill.

^^^^good luck with that. Maybe i should come out and bait your hook too.

By then they'll be moved out to 10-18 fow. I'd look around any cabbage or green weeds you can find. That strategy has worked out for me when I'm looking for crappies. I doubt anyone will give you any spots - especially on Potato. The crappie population has been hammered on that lake the last few years so people are more tight lipped than ever.

I am sure the ice is out by now, but can anyone give some water temps?

Posted

Mantrap surface temp was 48 last week, 39 sunday, and back up to 48 yesterday. I'd assume small lakes and shallows should be close to that since that was 3 fow reading on mantrap.

Thank You!

Just got home from the cabin, crappies were rockin, 4 walters mixed in (thrown back of course), and cant wait to get back up Monday! Good luck this weekend everyone!

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.
