Minnesota River Fishing Report

Agreed. The bite has been so incredibly slow lately after we got all that rain. Water temp is just too low.

Has anyone had any luck by carver?

The trestle is impassible, so I haven't been launching out of there. Only a couple spots that are fishable between the ramp and the trestle bridge, and really nothing downstream that isn't accessible via other ramps.

Nobody has the money right now, it sounds like. The railroad abandoned it and they aren't willing to pay to clean it out. They offered to sell it to Carver, but the city has no money for the corridor even if it didn't need to have the bridge removed. Every city council meeting somebody brings it up and then someone else will say "doesn't look that bad to me". Who knows if/when something will be done.

Just wait until it causes a flood...then someone will do something about it.

And yes I have heard of Cats being pulled from Carver near the bridge.

Last night could've been a good night. We had quite a few runs with a couple swing n misses, 2 come un-buttoned, and some short lived runs that got dropped. Ended up with a couple smaller flats. One of them that came undone felt pretty good too. mad

Will be back at it 2morrow and Saturday...

Slow up this way tonight. Had one tiny flathead in the boat, a swing and miss or two, a couple of hours of Darren fishing without bait, and a couple of big wins for John and I at poker (playing for wire/cable zip-ties).

Same here it's been really slow until 10 or 11 for me and then after midnight it gets slow again.

I did get a nice flat on cutbait Wednesday around 7. It was the same type of spots that I had been fishing in other stretches.

  • 2 weeks later...

Launched from Shock-town on Fri. night around 7:15 and got the last spot in the lot. When I arrived I saw the CO's truck and trailer also in the lot. We arrived back at the launch at around 12:15 just as the CO was getting in for the evening. I was a bit surprised to see him out so late as I haven't seen a CO out that late before on this body of water. After I left it got me thinking, how many miles does a CO cover in an evening on the river? To be out on the water for that amount of time I would think they really cover some water in an evening. Was anyone downstream from 101 greeted by the CO on Friday? It's been good to see them much more frequently lately on the river. Much respect for those guys laying down the law on hoodlums and poachers. As for a report, one dink flat that night for my buddy and a few other runs....all around the 10:30 mark. Stay safe guys.

Thor pulled up and chatted with us for awhile on saturday too. I've seen him on the 'sota and the 'sippi recently.

I wasn't on the river that night but have chatted with Thor a number of times from the MN River to Lake of the Isles. He's got a little catfishin' experience up his sleeve as well. wink

Last year they were on the water before the Belle Plaine contest all night and they patrolled the entire night of the contest I believe. I forgot how many miles he covered, it was a lot!!

They're out there, into the weeee hours of the night as well.

I definitely tip my hat to this guy!! Keep up the good work!

He went down as far as the end of barge traffic in Savage. I had a chat with him around 8:30pm and he checked on another boat fisherman then checked on some shore fisherman. Finally headed back upstream around 10:00

So did he check your bullies smile

Hopefully he will be out in full force stopping the idiots from messing up our rivers

Slow but steady out there. Fish are still showing up in most of the likely spots, but at a slower rate. 2 flats and 2 channels last night. All were 24-34". Lost one nice one on a bullie, and the rest were on cut mooneye. My buddy kept one 24" channel and it still had not spawned yet.

We had a slow night on the Carver side of the Jordan boat launch Tuesday night using sucker minnows. No hits between 8 and 11. There also seemed to be a sunken tree there our lines kept gettin snagged on.

I went fishing for the final time this season yesterday.  It was not very good.  Its the latest I've fished in a season for many years though because its been so warm out.   I decided not to duck hunt again this season based on the lack of success I've had in recent years.  By the reports I've heard locally, I made the right decision.   Between a full time job, yard work, going to the gym, and being a responsible Father/Husband, I don't get as much time to do what I want to anymore.  That's just the reality of it.  Sometimes I regret the decisions I've made on that, but now I'm stuck with it and its a necessary evil.  Retirement is still 20+ years away.  But I did go fishing 31 times this past season and I'm taking the whole week off to deer hunt.  After deer hunting I'll be pheasant hunting until the end of the year.   I'm grateful for my health and my mental ability that allow me to continue to do the things I enjoy, albeit not as much as I used to.   I try to post on here when I have successful days of fishing or hunting.  Sometimes it seems like the only fishing updates for weeks on end come from Vermilion.

My in-laws used to live just down from morning star. They weren't on the lake but they supposedly had access to the lake near morning star, some lake easement for residents living on the opposite side of the lake.

One last morning on the water this past Saturday before we took the docks and lifts out in the afternoon. Trolled the Morning Star bay for crappies. It was slow with just 2 or 3 crappies, although they were big ones. We could have kept them but chose to release. Also got a couple of northerns. I got skunked but my girlfriend got a good size northern. Biggest fish that any of the four of us caught on Saturday.

Well, actually going on family life expectancy.  Not many man on my dad's side made it past their late 60's.  On the other hand my wife's side most lived to late 80's into 90's.  So again, I really don't want to leave me wife in an area she is unfamiliar with or know anyone.  If she should pass away before me for some unknown reason.  Yes, they will find me dead in a cabin in the woods.

Well I had to go north this weekend with the predicted weather and boy did it not disappoint!   What a great weekend of perfect weather!!  Hit up Gull Lake Saturday afternoon equipped with a dozen lite pike minnows and a plan to move until we graphed fish and move if they don't bite.  First stop we searched and found one spot with bait balls and a few fish but nothing was biting so we went searching.  Searched alot of ground over the next hour and half and didn't mark a fish, so we went back to the spot with fish marked and as we pulled up there was one boat right on the spot...catching a fish!!  We trolled around with this boat exchanging information and catching fish for the next 2 hours.  We ended up catching 9 throwing back a 25" and keeping 8 from 13" up to 23" that was gut hooked.  Fished in 20-32' of water using lindy rigs with lite pike minnows.  Some fish we would give a lot of line to and they would have the bait swallowed and other times we would give line and find the hook just barely in the lip!  Missed a lot of hook sets but could not beat what was possibly the last fishing trip of the year for me...GOOD LUCK

I have been gearing up getting ready to walk again after 10 weeks!  I have been lucky enough to get out fishing a few times and can't wait to get out in the deer stand...bad thing is I have a basketball tournament for my 4th grade son on opening weekend of deer season and I am the coach!  Oh well I have used enough patience getting this far, what are another few days!  Otherwise not much for me to do...
