Any tips for a mid august trip to Big Sandy? Haven't fished the lake in almost 20 years. I've been studying my lake maps already, just wondering if there are any must visit area's of the lake.

I've been pickn up 4-6 walleyes each evening trolling raps and crawler spinner harness rigs on the edges of the weedline. After dark I havent been able to stay on the water, the skeeters have been nuts.

Been waiting all summer for this trip up to BSL, 5 more days and I will finally be on the water... pretty excited to see what the lake has to offer. After reading through some of the earlier posts, I just wanted to say to some of you that seem to be the "year round fishers of BSL" Thanks for all the tips and pics that are up, and that I will be as respectful to your lake as I would hope you would be on mine... C.P.R. the whole week.

I was across the highway all last week on Big Sandy. SPOONS! Thats all I have to say on that one... live bait wasn't working spinners weren't shiny enough.... Started throwing the five of Diamonds and the Northerns started jumping in the boat...(then right back off of course) Made the mistake of handing the Five of Diamonds over to my Dad who proceeded to bring in a Nice 12 pound 36" (pictures to come).

Was up this weekend and ended up getting a few eyes and a few crappies. They eyes all came in about 7-12 fow. We trolled lindy rigs for about 3-4 hours on sunday and got about 6 in the boat. Nothing huge, just had some fun. Crappies seemed to be very sporadic. Caught them on and off along with a LOT of rock bass.

The enterance near big sand bar is fine,as of Friday. Theres a ice ridge right next to it. It would be hard to pull a trailer out there, but my dually went around it just fine. Never went on any of the other launches.

Going to Aitken to attend a wedding this weekend and I was wondering if there are any lakes open up there to fish for panfish? blush

Not sure which lake your targeting, but by this weekend some small ponds should be open.

West of town the ice looks real dark and one or two more sunny days should do it. The larger lakes may take some more time.

I was down by Farm Island on Monday, and it was still ice covered. I'll drive past it tomorrow and post an update.

The last 3 days have been very sunny and warm up here. Cedar lake still has quite a bit of ice. I doubt that the bigger lakes will be open by this weekend, but next weekend they should all be open.

I was hoping to put the dock in this weekend (Gun Lake) and would be interested to hear if things are going to be on schedule for this weekend?

Korns, did yu do any ice fishing Gun this winter.? This is the 1st year in 21 years I didn't make it up there for ice fishing.

My journal shows April 25th to be about average ice out. except last year when it was out early April.

The lake level was up when I was there last in October. I wonder where its at this spring.

Todd,

I made it up there only once this year (I'm working fulltime and going to school fulltime, so don't have much available time).

Gun historically has ice out around April 15th, at least that is what I have seen over the past 30 years.

Farm Island still has a lot of ice. It has melted away from the shoreline, but still looks strong after about 20 feet from shore. The weather this weekend will not help melting much. A few of the small ponds west of town on HWY 210 have opened up.

Hi all, I was thinking of running up to the hunting shack this weekend and getting the boat out of storage. I'm near Lawler there by Mcgregor, any lakes open yet?

Just want to put the boat in and make sure it runs and all that, might as well wet a line and catch a sunny while i'm there.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
