We used to do well on Bowstring crappies by fishing at night and many walleye lakes in the area feature a sunset-into-dark bite.

Posted

Thanks! I guess I was looking at more of the lakes east of Grand Rapids. I'm in Hibbing, so I'd like to keep my drive under an hour.

I'm still a newbie to the area and don't know anyone around here, so it's tough finding a fishing spot with out A LOT of trial and error. (which I'm definitely not against at all, just narrowing it down as much as I can).

Anyone care to share any lakes around the Range that have night bite potential?

Just looking for a place to hit after work that potentially could lead to some action.

Thanks!

Walleyes will bite to/through dark on Trout in Coleraine. If you're from Hibbing, that's not too far. I'm sure swan has a good evening bite, too. I'm in the same boat as you - looking for an after-dark bite. I'm sure at least some of the crappie lakes will have a late bite, but it's no fun getting skunked over and over trying to find a night lake.

Thanks Deet! I tried Swan yesterday evening and it was a slimer-fest all evening into dark, then NA-DA! Everything shut off! I fished until 6'ish then got bored.

Try Diamond Lake

Brule ~ Where'd you fish on Swan?

Just west of the landing/bridge.

fished off the north end of swan today "monday" caught 3 nice walleye all in the slot few perch one 12" had to move deep to find fish on the vexi but a line in the water is always better than a remote in hand right.......

I'm wondering if anyone could help me with some info on ice/snow conditions north of GR in the Prairie Lake area? I'm heading up in a couple days bringing a snowmobile. Will I be able to get around on the lakes? Is there enough snow?

Any info from the area would be appreciated.

there wasnt much on saturday when i was there, but there was a little, like under an inch. ice varies, but most lakes have around 12", give or take

Thanks,Fishuhalik.

Fishuhalik's right - pretty much no snow to speak of. Certainly not enough for a snowmobile. If you've got a 4 wheeler - that's the way to go for now.

Been fishin pokie afew times and catchin alot of smallies- just wonderin if anybody else has had the same thing happenin?

Posted

i'm jealous hookset, i'd love to get into a bunch of smallies through the ice! just be careful with em, pokie has a good but fragile population of smallies. i've heard they bunch up in winter and are really vulnerable to overharvest.

I got my first chance at a lake trout on fri night! he engulfed my spoon on the free fall to the bottom, after fighting him for about 5 min and not gaining an inch, he had enough and shook the hook. Lots of fun tho! was also able to catch a could eyes for dinner and one throw back.

Fished pokie Saturday evening through Sunday. Sat at around 5 we pulled in one nice eater but that was it for prime time. My buddy and I ran into town to watch the hickey game while two of the guys stayed on the house. From 8-830 they lost two nice ones and missed two more. That was it till three thirty a.m. When my buddy pulled in a 18 on the rattle reel. Sunday only iced one small pike. How's everyone else's luck been ??

ANY info is greatly appreciated!

Fish have been tight lipped on area lakes don't know about Jack the horse the ice conditions 4 miles to the west Bowstring and the Jessie's have good ice conditions 20 inches, snow on lakes but can drive pretty much anywhere may have to watch for some driffs.Cold front in right now through saturday low last eve -5 teens during day.

thx for the info snow.. ill make sure to bring extra layers as it looks like it will be a bit colder this weekend- finally!! hopefully ill be able to get on some fish. Was thinking of hitting some smaller lakes in the area, possibly little bowstring or grave.

Haven't fished Jack for a few years but we used to get into some crappies in winter. They were not real big but had some action. Fished the area two weeks ago and it was slow but I was told they were getting some crappies on Jack. Don't know if it was true or not as we didn't have a wheeler along to check it out and it's a bit of a hike from the access to the crappie hole. I'm sure they would know at the resort, also check at Frontier bait for ant reports in the area. Good luck!!

Good pike lake! Not a ton of big fish but a good numbers/eater lake. Just set a tipup or two on the weededge just about anywhere on the lake.

Water temps have finally warmed up enough(53.4º)to get panfish moving up shallow. Blake Liend (pictured) and I did well on the crappies last night by fishing from shore. The hot bait for us was Northland Tackle's Impulse "May Fly". They were eating it up. No live bait was used and over 30 fish were caught. So nice to see it finally "happening."

Water's warming up very nice. Last trip out had it at 59º. I've been doing the majority of my fishing "North of Nashwauk" (hwy 65) and up the Scenic Highway 7. I think it's going to be a great opener for most all species!

Took the little boat out yesterday to a small "back-in-the-buch" lake and did well on the sunnies, hence the fish-basket. Things are warming up real good, with water temps in the high 50's to low 60's. You're going to have several options for Opening Day, as they should all bite well (walleye, pike, panfish, bass & trout).full-130-20258-img_0947.jpg

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.

Table is updated below.  Opening day is likely in jeopardy.  Lots of good dates available for those sitting on the sideline.

That's ok, got the Bear hunting out of my system years ago.  Still have some good spots on the GPS up in the Arrow head!  Did love me some good greasy bear roasts though!  😋
