2020 Detroit Lakes-Pelican Rapids Fishing Reports - Lake Conditions

Recommended Posts

Walleye fishing has been terrible for me the last couple weeks, only a few fish caught. Luck changed tonight just south of DL. 4 eyes caught and a few missed right at five. All came in 14 fow on the deadstick with fatheads and a red #4 hook. Very aggressive fish! Hope this bite lasts a couple more weeks!

Went to Lida yesterday. Fished an area I haven't been in before. 15fow, about 30 bluegills, 11 of which I kept between 8.5" and 10", one nice 13" crappie, a largemouth bass (released), two northerns (released), a few tiny perch (do I ned to say,... released), and one bite-off. The fish were pretty aggressive, chasing the bait up several feet and usually hitting.

It sounds like we are going to have a great stretch of weather comeing up here, so I'm planning on spending wed, thurs, and saturday up on tamarack chasing the big gills around again. I saw on the dnr site that theres some eyes in there, and I'm wondering if it would be worth trying for them? I spent quite a bit of time up there this year and never heard of anyone catching them, so a little reasurance from someone would be nice. If anyone else is up there stop by and say hi. I have a one man clam with a red boat seat on it, and probably the loudest jiffy on the ice(its pretty tough to miss).

So you are the guy with the loud Jiffy!! grin JK, they are all pretty loud. I was out there a couple of weekends ago and they guys I was fishing with caught 3 eyeballs.

yeah my jiffys a bit louder than normal. I tore the engine down and ported it to help with some running issues when it was given to me, and to make it run right after the engine was rebuilt I had to build a pipe for it. I could have just about bought a auger at this point but man dose it cut and cut fast especially for a 10 inch. Its turned into a fun little project now, alot of guys come ask what I did to the thing when it starts throwing ice 10 feet from the hole. But it sounds like I might have to chase a few eyes around this week. Thanks Leach

Sounds like a heckuva machine you have there basswhacker! I made it out yesterday and picked up a couple delicious eyes around three oclock. Tried moving three feet deeper and nothing. 14 to 15 fow seems to be the ticket for me, and golden shiners.

Well I made it out as planned today and the sunnies and crappies were eating plastics really good right away, but as soon as it started snowing the bite shut down big time and the only thing they would even look at was waxies. All the fish were caught suspended over 16 feet of water. Heres a couple of the nicer ones, both were right about 9 3/4".

Monster walleyes and northens are showing up on shallow flats on many area lakes pounding suckers. Northerns bite until the sun goes down then its eye time. Bigger the minnow the bigger the fish! Id tell you the name of the lakes but that would take away from the whole fun of fishing.

I fished a small lake, about 50 acres, over near osage today. I Found crappies right away but it was a very tough bite. they would justt sit there and stare at the minnow and then out of no were they would just about rip the rod out of your hand. The fish were in about 38 feet of water, suspended anywere from 15-22 feet down. They all wanted a minnow under a bobber, if you moved your bait at all the fish would bolt. The two biggest of the day were both a bit over 13" and I caught a few in the 10-12" range.

Little adventure today. On the lake at 1pm, driving off at 3pm with limit of Crappies. Few pics showing my setup and a couple of the "catch of the day" coming threw the holes. Most on waxies, 2 on minnows.

I hit 6 lakes between friday and saturday, and I caught alot of fish nothing huge but I did get a few gills right around 9" and and one crappie that went just over 13". Most fish came on a frostee spoon tipped with as many waxies as I could pack onto the hook.

Went to Many Point this morning chasing a crappie rumor. Only caught one crappie, although it was 13", a bunch of bluegills, two largemouth bass, and a northern. Tried 26 feet of water with both crappie minnows and wax worms. Quite a bit of snow, so a four-wheel drive in mandatory.

The lakes look pretty rough, any reports on the ice. Is there even a lake with in an hour that has fishable ice, walking of coarse. I was hopeing to wet a line on my day off tommorow.

Saw one guy had gone out on Lida this afternoon. Hope he came back. The only other lake I saw ice fishermen was on Little Pelican. I think they accessed through private property though.

Any reports from the weekend? I'm hopeing to spend next weekend with the wadders on looking for crappies. So I'm wondering if the fish will be moved up enough to be accessible on foot.

  • 2 weeks later...

I threw on the waders after school today and hit a lake just outside of town. I ended up finding a few crappies on a isolated clump of old reeds in about 6 feet of water. I also found some nice sunnies chaseing minnows in about a 2 feet of water. On the walk back I threw out to another clump of reeds and caught these 3 bonus bass. All the fish came on a white flu flu with a crappie minnow.

  • 3 weeks later...

Been taking the kids to the same lake since the fish are biting, catching small crappies every night and that's enough to keep them enjoying it. I am planning a trip to a lake with a little bit better sized crappies this weekend, depending on the weather.

Should be a good time. If anyone wants to get out anytime give me a hollar.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
