Got out to Big Cormorant last night. Nice afternoon and evening, other than the incident reported in another post. Caught eight walleyes, mostly small with bottom bouncers and spinners tipped with crawlers in deeper water. Had a few bluegills and one teeny, tiny perch mixed in. Nice to get a few walleyes. It hasn't been the greatest summer for them so far.

Hey Leechbait, ready to try that bass thing again? Might have a night this week to give it a try.

Don't be shy, like meeting other members.

Met Zelek (sp?) the other day. Unfortunately due to trolling motor problems. We have a guy that services MinnKota where I work.

Late report from Labor day weekend. Caught walleyes in the 15-20 foot range mainly around structure/edges. All walleyes caught on lindy with a crawler. Walleyes seemed to be 2-4 feet off the bottom. Nice fat walleyes with biggest at 25".

Tried Beers Lake just because the wind was supposed to come up. Had one muskie on, nothing huge, three northerns, and 13 or 14 largemouth bass. Most of the bass were small, but a couple were 18". If anyone is looking for a nice fillet size northern. I would give Beers a try. Two of the three were four pounds and the last one was a little over five pounds. The long fish came on white spinnerbaits and a small muskie lure. The bass all came on a floating frog in the slop.

The water temps are still high for this time of year in my area and the lakes really haven't turned yet. So we are still using late summer tactics. Fishing the edges of the weeds near the drop offs.

We fished this weekend, the first time in a while for me, but we managed a ton of crappies over an basin area trolling 1/8 oz jigs tipped with minnows. We just used the electic motor and went back and forth over an 18 foot hole next to a slow shoreline drop/weed edge. Some passes we would catch them up against the weeds and others they would be as far as 50 yards off the weeds. We even caught a couple walleyes and some smaller bass!

Soon the lakes will turn over and those panfish will be feeding on bugs coming off bottom in those mid range holes, 18-30 feet deep.

well...got the boat out for one last time with SJMeyers32. Fished Leif Lake on Sat. late afternoon in 35-40mph gusts for about 45 min. Drowned 2 minnows, no action...and that is the end of my soft water season.

The smaller shallow ponds and lakes were frozen all the way over this morning on the way to work!!

I know it's just the start of things and won't last but still, I got excited!

Actually yes I did, once in late spring. We caught a lot of northerns, some decent bass, and searched for pannies in the evening but only found a few gills and two nice crappies. I imagine a few more trips we could have pegged them down!

Just got back from pond N of DL; how fun is it to not have to wait till evening to catch crappies!! Started at Noon, walked off with limit of nice crappies and 3 gills over 9" at 2pm. What a treat, short walk, no heater needed today and only one other porty on the pond.

I stopped at a road side pothole just outside of DL for a couple hours just to see if there were any fish in the lake and found a nice surprise. Everywere you looked there was perch the size of the small one and everyonce in a while you would find a school like the bigger one. I think a person could have kept a couple limits of those big ones. They were caught on a 10 foot mud flat as best I could tell with the flasher.

Two days of fishing for me this weekend, one day spent on a lake that produced a ton of walleyes, unfortunately they were all tiny cigars. Felt like LOW fishing!!

Second day spent out on a lake near Naytahwaush, 14-25 FOW. Plenty of tip up ation to keep us busy, between the four of us we had caught probably 15 northerns and 5 walleyes and couple big bass in a couple hours.

I finally was able to get into some decent panfish last night! I fished this lake twice this year with out any luck besides perch and northerns, but last night I tried a different spot and it produced!

Didn't take me long to find an old inside turn I used to fish years ago with my dad and I only had to drill one hole thanks to my Marcum Ice troller. I dropped down a red lindy frostee tipped with a couple waxies and the first fish was a nice big fat bluegill close to 10". I caught about 10 gils and 6 crappies. I found the spot to put my perm on!

Leech, what kind of inside turn is it? Meaning 10-20, 5-15, emergent rushes in the summer, etc...I'm trying to kitchen table scout some lakes for crappies and sunfish for the next couple weekends hopefully.

Submerged cabbage and coontail in summer, the bar tops out at 9 to 10 feet and drops off to 15 feet immediately on both sides and there is deeper water in the mid 20s outside of that.

got out today and found the sunnies in anywere from 12 to about 24 feet of water. Biggest one was just shy of stretching across my 10 inch hole. I also caught a couple kicker perch and 12 largemouth.

Thanks Leech, the weather is awsome I love it when your holes don't freeze over when your hole hopeing, and not needing to sit in the shack to stay warm

Tuesday and Wednesday I didn't have much luck, I fished the same lake I did Monday night, on Tuesday but the fish went cold on me, I caught a few, marked quite a few but I could tell they went tight lipped.

Wednesday I fished with a friend who was already set up, a small little 20 acre lake and we caught 3 walters and one big crappie.

Tonight I'm going somewhere, depends on how windy it is and what direction the wind is coming from. From what I hear it may be pretty breezy

We just returned this afternoon from 6 days on Vermilion. We arrived Saturday and enjoyed 3 fantastic days of walleye fishing. My cousin, our friend Greg, and myself fished several of our spring spots and found fish on all of them. Water temperatures were pretty much 65-67 degrees everywhere we fished. The wind was variable and made boat control a challenge at times. Bait was not an issue and we had success on crawlers(Tim), leeches(Greg), and minnows(me). If I had to pick one of those as catching the most fish, it would be crawlers. Our best day totalled 48 walleyes, 4 smallmouth, and 2 big JUMBOS. We ended up with over a hundred walleyes, 12 jumbos 11"-13", and 10 smallmouth to 18". Our biggest walleye was 24.5" and the balance went from 13"-22". There are lots of 14"-16" walleyes this year which are perfect eaters. The mayfly hatch was in full bloom in some areas but we found very few mayflies in the water column over rock reefs. We caught our fish in depths ranging from 10' to 32'. I didn't fish in any area where I could see mayflies top to bottom in the water column. Slow trolling in the .3mph to .6mph worked and we caught nothing using slip bobbers. Terminal tackle was a 3'-4' 10# flurocarbon leader, 2 lime colored beads, and a plain #6 Gamakatsu walleye hook . Snags are always an issue when fishing in and around the rocks and when the fish are biting they are acceptable. NOW, for the bad news.......Tuesday was a day I won't soon forget. The area suffered devastating torrential rainfall. Lightning was non-stop for several hours and when things settled down, flood damage was everywhere. We checked our rain guage on the side of the cabin and we got 7 3/4 " in a little over 4 hours! Breezy Point road washed out, Mud Creek road washed out as did several others in the area. Cooke business area was completely covered with flood water. I would consider it a disaster area and should be declared as such. We couldn't find a dock anywhere that wasn't covered with water. People were stranded behind flood covered and washed out roads. Dock decking, limbs and such were floating everywhere in the big water. My group sends our prayers to the people of that beautiful country that lost their businesses, homes, and suffered damage to their lake properties. The people of that north country are resilient and we have confidence that they will recover. We stayed our final 3 days but didn't fish at all Tuesday. Our last 2 days showed the effects of the storm. Water temps dropped to 64 degrees and our premo fishing became 10 walleye days. We did manage to catch a dozen really nice jumbos. We plan on returning in September and we pray the area will have returned to normal by then. I haven't figured out how to transfer photos from my phone to my computer yet so no pictures at this time. Good Fishing and God be with you. MarkB

Word is that the river has peaked and therefore the town can start the process of recovering sooner.
    • smurfy
Heard that too. Also heard 38 was closed for a but north of rapids due to flooding.    I know the water really came up when I was up last week compared to when I was there in April.
    • Kettle
Someone said 4 inches in the past week, more expected this weekend. A few roads, including county roads that are asphalt ended up with sink holes. Lakes are the highest I've ever seen in the 30+ years coming to the area and now living here. Several people lost trees Tues night
    • smurfy
Dang Kettle  that bites. Great to hear fishing was good though.   How much rain you get up that way?
    • Dash 1
50 in 6 hours is great. Boat issues really put a damper on a great day though. Hope you get it fixed quickly.
