Been pretty hush hush around here lately.  I know guys are going out, but haven't heard much of any reports.

Seems like the weekends are windy as all get out and the calm days come in the middle of the week so a little hard to shore fish. The ice will be here soon and that will change things up.

I'm headed up to Koma/Malberg/Polly in the BWCA in a few weeks, anyone here familiar with those lakes and willing to share any walleye tips/spots for mid June fishing?

Happy to report back how we did and what worked when we get back.....

June 5 Lake Superior Report.    Time: 2 rigs parked at Rice's Point. :)

Morning started out with strong West winds and left over swells from high winds out of the NE.   It was a morning with an open window from a weeks worth of overcast and rains.   I had to be off the water by 11 AM for an engagement I couldn't miss.

We stayed between Duluth Entry and the Apartments. 50-80 FOW,  why there, it was windy.   Surface temps 47-52 and a cold layer of water 40' down.       Purple Metallic Bomber was best lure for us.  Orange over gold bomber and again in metallic caught fish both on top.   Increased the setback and releases started to pop.    It was hard to resist the layer so went  30" down on a dispy,  a green/blue Howie fly behind a flasher,  it took a laker.   The wind actually died down for a while and debri fielded showed.  Hate pulling up lines when your on the fish but as said I had to.    Turned out it saved us from getting poured on hard and some pretty good gusts.

The walleye bite on Devilfish lake is great. Some lakers and nice rainbows have been coming Trout lake. Kimball is giving up rainbows as well just not as big. Lake trout and salmon are starting to bite on Superior in the grand Marais area. If you like brook trout check out the small streams and rivers.

I can verify the trout bite out of Kimball Lake in about 14 hours  I talked to my dad yesterday (he's already up there), he caught a 4 pound lake trout from shore on Superior, right in front of our motel.

St. Louis River opening weekend - this was the first time in 7 years the Arrowhead flats did not produce for us.  We moved up river and found a few small eyes just above Spirit lake and only 2 keepers by noon.  Lots of boats around, but very few nets out.  jigging plastics caught the keepers (20" and 21").  Bottom bouncing with pink or chartreuse worm harnesses caught the little ones.   No hits on hammered gold harnesses...very surprised by that.

Sunday - Better morning for us, 10 eyes boated with 2 keepers early (jigging in 6-12 FOW).  caught small mouth, rock and white bass with an occasional perch while BB.  The evening bite was better, only one boat near us.  Jigging in 6 FOW with gold jigs and plastics got us 2 crappie and 3 keepers.  Overall, very slow opener and should have headed up to Boy Scout, heard better reports from others at the docks.  All males, still had sperm sacks intact or milting.  Water temp was 54-55.

Headed north to a little perch and walleye lake this morning. The day didn't start the greatest, go to take off from the landing and the boat porpoised like a mofo... Ah crap forgot the plug haha haven't done that one in a few years... The day got better from there, we found fish stacked up on the wind blown weed line... There were so many fish I assumed they were schools of big perch, but they were mostly smaller walleyes with some real nice keepers mixed in... Crawlers under a bobber were the ticket... They would hardly touch a leech.

I went back up north of Duluth again this morning and tried a different little walleye lake and it panned out very nicely... If I could have a cabin on a lake it would be this lake... The access is pretty rough, but if you got a roller trailer it's all good in the hood... I found them stacked up on the edge of a little weed bed. They didn't fire up until about 9 o'clock, but when they did it one after another... You know they are fired up when you catch 7 on 7 casts haha that was a 1st for me. Jig and plastic was the best with rigging leeches 2nd best...

Where were you and what did you catch them on? :D

Top secret lake ;)... I've only fished it a few times in the winter and I've never caught a gill out there, but the survey said they are in there. So I guess they are right ha... In the winter hands down my favorite fish to fish for. Big red mark slowly coming up to your jig and you just know it's a tank haha.

This lake pisses me off, I know them big tanks are in there, but I can never find them in the winter...Maybe I'll have to try the boat in there.

Lake trout are being caught at 60' and some coho at 50' using gold/orange jigging spoons.

Reports that the shoreline ice of Lake Superior near Duluth is 5.5" to 6".

Ice conditions can change at any moment on the big lake. It can be dangerous so keep safety top of mind.

I'm getting pumped to head back up the Gunflint this coming May. Here's a video I made from last June. Incredible smallmouth action on top water, jerk baits, and wacky worms!

I doubt it, but you can check the harbor cams during the day.  http://www.duluthharborcam.com/p/blog-page_13.html

As we drove into Duluth Friday afternoon there were 4 ships outside the lift bridge waiting. It was stuck down from ice after the big storm and I think it just got running again Thursday.

There is still a lot of moving water. This morning it’s -3 but that’s not nearly cold enough to get things rolling for the harbor. Be patient it’ll be ready within the next Few weeks probably.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
