Even with my 25 pound line I had to let it take drag, and regrettably allowed it to snag me under some rocks. No idea what it was, the guy next to me was watching and suggested it was probably either a sturgeon or a very large laker.

Possible Chinook?

Went out over the weekend for the last time this year. Caught one tiny laker...nothing else.

Now it's fishing the St Louis and then my Rainy River trip then the boat goes into storage

Decided to switch it up and try for panfish today and got a nice mix bag of slabs, big gills, perch and a few walleyes... The only spot I found fish was right on a breakline going from 6-10ft out from

Got out and found some nice wallys and a pile of jumbos.

1st piggy of the year already, going to be a good year.

Nice day out on the river.

Launched out of Boyscout and headed for the bridge and Spirit Lake.

Walleyes caught in 20 feet with jigs and suckers and chubs. From th bridge to Spirit Lake.

I saw a few guys trolling these big balls out the back of there boat. I thought they were planer boards but they looked liked big bobbers. What would they be fishing for?

Were you up river or lower? Live bait or artificials? I saw a few boats head up river towards the bridge. We stayed by the Oliver bridge to Spirit Lake

12 fish 22-26.5" wow Id say that's a good day. Pics? We C&Red caught fish pretty much all afternoon but mostly small with one being 21" did find a pod of rock bass mixed in with crappies that was fun to catch on our ice rods using vexilars..

Yeah i would say its a great day fishing never done that good on big fish all in 1 day on the river tried again this morning only caught 3 a 23 inch a 21.5 and a 18 inch it prolly would have been better if you could keep your bait in the water there's a lot of floating weeds right now you go 20 feet and your lures are already hung up with weeds I catch and release all my fish also unless my dad wants some for dinner then I just fill the live well with some little 15 inchers

How's the river been lately? I haven't been out since I last posted as I'm heading up to the Rainy River today and wanted my boat to be invasive species free before heading up there?

Has anybody pulled spinners in the river this late? Minnows or crawlers?

Fished from Boyscout to Spirit Lake on Monday. Definitely didn't have the luck as the previous posts mentioned. Very few small Walleyes w/ only one being a legal keeper and 2 Croppies. Bonus was a 30" Northern caught by my wife (her personal best). Tried jigging fatheads and Suckers. All caught preferred Fatties over Suckers.

Crappies are going good on the St.Louis River as well as Island Lake. Jig n minnow. Nice size too. On the river fish that 17-25' of water and on Island the 22' to 30'. Dont use crappie minnows get fatheads and you have a shot at some eyes as well.

Fished a local lake yesterday (Sunday) with 4-5" of good clear ice. I was surprised when I arrived to see so few portables and fishermen. The day before I did recon drive up there to find 17 portables on the ice and a few bucket fishers. Anywho, I began to realize WHY there might have been so little traffic. After hole hopping all day marking very few tight lipped somethings, decided to set up shop in an area that in seasons past was good for early season action and wait it out. Took some time, but when they decided it was time to eat, it was time to eat. 1st came a few Perch with a few slimers mixed in, then the 'eyes came. Jigging produced the numbers but the dead stick caught the larger sizes. I was amazed how light all the fish were biting. No hawgs were caught but all the fish caught were "plump".

Over all it was a good day for fishing.

Can anyone give me reports on ice conditions and vehicle traffic on boulder, pike, or fish lake?

Lots of traffic! But be smart and stay away from any area's with potential for flowing water. With these warm temps it does not take but a few hours for flowing water to eat away at the ice from underneath.

My uncle has been catching some cohos trolling near Grand Marais. He has been getting most of his fish between 25-35 feet down. For Lake Trout he has been jigging them around the rocks out from Cut Face Creek.

For rainbow trout they have been catching a good number at Mink lake. For bigger sized Rainbows look to Trout lake and Talus Lake.

Walleyes have been biting on Tom Lake in the 10-14 foot depths on leeches.

Berries are going good if you can find a patch that has not been picked over. I know my uncle took a drive over by Greenwood Lake and found a gallon and half of blueberries and 2 gallons of raspberries. When picking berries watch for bears and bring bug spray.

I have a feeling it is due to most all busy with family things and the fact that Lake Superior is so cold at our end that the fishing is not worth reporting. Like this morning the lake is fogged in and the fishing stinks in the fog for what ever reason. that and you get to dodge boats you can't see and only hear. It will pick up once the fall season starts ramping up.

There are fish near the Duluth/Superior entries but they're on the small sized. The water temp went from the upper 60's to mid 40's and yesterday back in the low 50's. Did pick up a nice king between the two entries last week trolling over 70 some feet of water.  I drove down Sat am and that fog over the lake was thick so I didn't get a chance to fish Sat.

Spoons behind dipseys and boards. Still nothing on the downriggers.

Anybody been fishing Island or Fish?

Fish lake has been doing good but has slowed down a bit.  Weeds are showing up more now also but the weed edges have been good as of last week.  Island Lake has slowed down and the eye'e are deeper but smallmouth are hungry all over the place.  Rice Lake is getting the weeds back as usual this time of the year. My brother has caught a few in the open pockets and edges trolling with a single blade and leech or minnow.  Few pike and crappies as well.  Boulder Lake is still a couple of feet lower than normal but you can get your boat out now.  Fishing in general is slow, but it's August.  Things should pick up in September and October. good luck.

Lake Superior just outside Duluth has been picking up nicely. Downriggers are the ticket but deep diving dipseys have also been producing for us. Spoons. Green in particular. Around 80 feet close to the bottom. I don't know what effect this rain today will have but in the last few days that was the pattern

Thanks for the report TJ.   My brother was out of McQuades and they got some lakers around the 70 80 foot depth as well on downriggers.  Nothing huge but some decent meals on the way.  Won't be long and the salmon will be closer to shore and the lakers will be closer into Duluth.  We did well last September early in the mornings trolling the reef right outside the Duluth entry on the left.  Just used deep diving cranks trolling around that reef.  good luck.

Ice is making it's way now! Thanks to last nights 9 degrees. The lake has officially froze over evenly. Will give another report Friday! Should be walking out and fishing in 10 days!

We have lost one of the good ones. Had a long conversation with him on Gull lake in a Bass tournament we both were fishing couldn't of met a better person very down to earth classy  comical person . He and his brother AL have been my idols since I was a kid. Rip Ron may the fishing gods shine upon you.

Well Today was my maiden voyage on the ice and boy was I stoked to hit the Hardwater again! Felt great to get back on the Hard pack for another season. Plus side was I even managed to put some nice fish topside. 😀   I fished the NW corner of the state and found a good 4-5 inches on the lakes and areas I fished. This wasn't the norm though most of the lakes either just capped over or were 1-3 inches. Need some serious cold stable weather to firm things up. Cant stress ice safety and common sense in these early ice periods. Ill continue to post the current ice conditions I come across in my adventures throughout the season and hope others will also.

On the south end...  It's a waiting game.  Hoping for cold temps and calm winds.  This past week saw some strong winds blow ice around the basin, eating up some of the thinner ice that had formed.  Forecast looks promising to lock things up in the very near future.  Resorts are monitoring ice conditions on Four Mile Bay, Zippel Bay and various areas of the shoreline.  It's important to wait until they say it's good to go and stay on their marked trails when it is time.  Resorts and outfitters monitor ice conditions now and throughout the season daily.  Some spearing and angling for pike in back bays.
On the Rainy River...   The river is covered in most places with a layer of ice.  Most ice fishing is done on the main lake during the ice season where there isn't current.  There can be some good ice fishing on the Rainy, but with current in the river, work through a resort for safety.
Up at the NW Angle...  With the border closure, NW Angle Resorts and Community have pulled together and will have an ice road up to the Angle so anglers can access resorts.  The NW Angle Guest Ice Road ice access on the south end will be at Springsteel Resort.  More info on Facebook @nwaiceroad.
The Angle is iced over and resorts are monitoring ice thickness.  Some resorts have been checking for walleyes in a few spots having good success.  It's not ready yet, but the ice is coming along nicely.

While on my way home from work this morning, I seen that Peltier Lake was frozen over. Clear Lake was probably 99% froze over...looked like a couple random little open spots from geese. To my surprise, Forest Lake was completely iced over. Someone was still busting through ice and duck hunting though. This is very encouraging, as I was hoping to hit the ice this weekend, somewhere north of Hinckley. Tonight’s low is supposed to be in upper teens. Anyone else see other lakes?

Has anyone been out to check ice on any lakes in area. Heard there was 2-3 inches on strand.

Yup, I started it. Seeing people post about water temps in the low 40s, and knowing that there will be a lot of cold temps this week....we may see the small bays freeze. I have a vested interest as I'd like to make it up next weekend, but have strong doubts that our small bay will be ice-free. Let's hear those reports as the lake begins to change.

Looks like NOAA national weather has modified their colder than normal winter with December being quite a bit warmer. May be a struggle to get good ice by Christmas especially Southern two thirds of the state. Getting above average snow (as forecasted) will also hamper ice build. Hope they are wrong.

Oh so many, but I will keep it to my worst 3 on Vermilion (associated photos follow).  Hope I don't win (or lose?).   1979 - duck hunting in Stuntz Bay with my friend in a 17 foot square-stern canoe, a decoy cord got caught in the 6hp Johnson prop.  Rather than going to shore to untangle, I attempted to free it on the water by tipping the motor up and reaching back.  When I started losing my balance in this awkward position, I decide to slide into the water rather than tip the entire canoe and my friend.  Finished setting up for hunting and left my friend in the blind while I went back home for dry clothes.   1981 - water-skipped my dad's 1973 Arctic Cat Cheetah 340 snowmobile over 70 feet in the Stuntz Bay little narrows.   1998 - in late March I went to fish lakers on Trout Lake on an extremely foggy morning.  I was dragging my portable fish house loaded with gear (close to 100 pounds total) on the rear bumper of my 1993 Polaris Indy 440.  I left McKinley Park two hours before sunrise and headed for Canfield Portage.  When I reached a shore I followed the shoreline but didn't find the portage.  This was before I had a GPS and visibility was very limited due to darkness and fog, so I spent the next 1½ hours looking for the portage.  During this search I crossed open stretches of water 5 times going around points while following shorelines.  When it finally started getting lighter I realized that I was on the east end of Pine Island.  I then went around the back side of Pine and made it to Trout Lake well after daylight.  Only caught 5 eelpout that day.

Good call. I have no idea. Probably will not work?

Hi Bob, did you see my picture taken out in front of my place? The son of the guy that lives on Partridge Rd was out fishing out there-in the middle of the channel. Went out from Ron's access. Also, snowmobile tracks out along our shoreline. Ron didn't know how they did fishing. Did you get a deer? I might be up this weekend, if my layoff starts Friday.

Thanks, I looked at what band I have and all I can see is Band 2, not the 12/13-17. So I don't know if I should order it or not. I have att, a android phone, if anyone knows if that will work????
    • BWpineisland
The box it came in is at the cabin and until the ice is good I wouldn’t be back. If you don’t get one before Christmas let me know and I’ll look at the numbers but the ad is identical.
    • BWpineisland
It’s the same one I bought in June. I see the $30 off coupon also. Good deal!   I temporarily mounted it on my deck and pointed the antenna towards Cook and it worked so good I haven’t bothered to mount it on the roof. I was amazed with the coverage. It worked with one of my buddies ATT phone also. Good luck.

Does anybody know what the ice conditions are on the west end of the lake. I am hoping to get out this weekend hoping to find some of those monster crappies.

Thanks for the info. Can you double check the make and model number? I found the one for 189.00, plus it has a 30.00 off coupon. The reviews aren't super good, but I trust your review more than amazon reviews. They have several, just want to make sure it's the same one. Thanks
