easy to do (live bait rig) get a weight swivel and a hook and you have a good start to a basic bait rig to start trolling with.....

Gull has been better for eyes lately for me. Have found them on mid-lake structure in 20 ft plus water well away from weedlines. This has been early a.m. stuff.

Has anyone been doing very well on the Gull chain? I have heard of some being caught on the weedlines but not a lot. I havent had the chance to get over there lately and was going to try this week.

Any new reports on the bite on Gull? Is it still the deep weedline and what seems to be working ?

We had success last week lindy rigging with red tails around the weed edges (12ft to 15ft). Clouds and wind were a major factor. Walleyes and Bass together with Rock Bass eek and Northerns. I fished early every day 5:30AM to 9:30AM. Check out Cobins bar and the Hayfield on the north end.cool

I built amd lived in the house just off of the Halfmoon landing. Fished that area a lot. Great small mouth this time of year. Also did ok for eyes on some of the bends. Talked to one guy a few years back caught a musky in Halfmoon.

When we went out there last night, we noticed there were alot of hard bottom and depth fluctuation. some spots would be 15 to 17 foot while others esepecially on the bends were 5 to 7 foot of water and seemed to have alot of current moving thru it. what would u use for the smallies and walleyes thrue there. My son caught a HUGE ring perch last night about 2 lbs. and we hit a few crappies and some big sunnies but that was about it.

Someone told me the walleyes are really deep, like 40+ on Pelican. Is this true? I would expect the fish would all die if you were catching them that deep with the water temps where they are. Thoughts or reports?

You might find them that deep, but 18-22 has been best for me, lots of numbers and nice fish with jigs and minnows. Generally always better fishing and better for the fish to fish as shallow as possiable.

slow day today on gull. marked lots of fish, but no biters. Blame it on the front that moved in last night.

fished Gull- monday and tuesday sept 20,21st. Monday had an bad east wind gusting to 35 mph- made fishin a little tough- did manage four 18" eyes - using live bait rigs with rainbows- couldnt find decent sized redtails- that may have worked better in my opinion- Tuesday landed 12 walleyes- some on the small 14" size but four over 20" as well- live bait rigs again- here is the kicker- I couldn't catch a fish in under 30 ft of water and the majority came out of 50+ feet of water- great to be out up north again- good luck!

I'm going to attempt Gull on Saturday unless it's pouring rain. Thanks for the update. Guess I'll start looking at the weeds and head deep till I find them.

Arrived in Brainerd 3ish Wed, fished Edward from 7 to 2:00Am and took 1 eye and kept 12 crappie from 10 - 13", minnows and mimic minnow, interestingly, we also cought 5 bullheads with one of them looking like his head was the size of a softball! Fished Round 2 days when the wind was blowing 7000mph smile and caught maybe 10 kept 6. tough to control the boat and rain made it miserable but what do you do when on vacation, fish! Friday night after the wind died I waded onto the flats and threw a #11 original rapala and caught one walleye about 1:00 am under the full moon, way cool! Finally got on Gull Sat about 9:30 after replacing the starting motor, grrr, marked fish on the big rock bar, threw a bouy out on the marked fish and withing 15 minutes there were 10 boats in the area. Didn't catch any so moved to Cinosam bar and got two. tried a couple of the sunken islands with no luck then moved to Holmans point and found some fish using the transition between two small ridges running off the weed line down to 25'. Caught 9 keepers there, largest just under 22" and one 27" northern, all eyes came from the 13'-18' range on both round and gull, some into the weeds. One more thing I'll say is that we used redtails, chubs, and rainbows and caught fish on all of them. Bought 3 doz rainbows Sat AM and only had 5 left that night and cleaned 9 eyes. At $4-5 a doz it was a good alternative to $9 redtails.

Good luck!

We just closed the camper down on Edward this weekend. This was one of the worst years we have ever had for Eye's on the lake. Also, did you say you kept 12 crappies from Edward? They are even harder to find on that lake then Walleye's are. Good Job! wink

Went out to Gull today. Awesome day to have off and to be fishing. Wow, the bite was on. Rigging with redtails in 20 to 16 fow on a very steep break to deep water. Right where they're supposed to be. The wind picked up at 1:30 and they started feeding. All fish between 16 and 23 inches. Water temp 55. West wind at 10 to 15 and a slowly falling barometer. We found alot of small fish in spots but kept searching til we struck gold. Good luck!

Been on Gull 3 times in the last 2 weeks. some of the best fishing I've had all year. some days they were right next to the weeds other days we found them in 25 - 28 feet. best has been lindy with red tail or large rainbow although I've caught them on jig and minnow some on raps and even used up some old crawlers and caught them on those too.

Traxx, how has the walleye been up in your neck of the woods lately? I'd like to get out on Gull at least one more time this fall. Its been a great year, from the ice in january, the hot summer months, early fall and now id like to hit em one more time this late fall.

Was out on Gull one week ago today. Took my Father in Law out for his last outing of the year. Caught 25 - 30 eyes, wanted to have a family fry so we kept 10 for the pan...nice size 15 - 17"

JW,

Haven't been out in a while, been busy chasing birds around. Sounds like they're still biting good on Gull from the reports I've been hearing. I'll be on stand all this week. Hopin to get a chance at a big buck and poke him with a sharp stick whistle Good luck if you head up. Not long til we're back on the ice cool

Picked up a couple of nice eyes on Gull saturday and marked a ton in 24ft but couldn't get anymore to bite. Had to put the boat away for the year. Can't wait till ice I guess.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
