Was out for crappies on Hubert last night in 50 fow in that deep trough in the middle of the lake. In 3 hours I only saw 2 suspended marks on the vexilar. I was out in 45 fow, 15 yds away, a week and a half earlier and saw all kinds of big marks suspended halfway down. They would come and go. I caught a couple of walleyes in that spot, but no crappies. That lake is soo tough to fish. Too much deep water. One of these days I'll be right on top of them. That is the 2nd deepest part of the lake, I thought they would be there this time of year. I know guys that fish 65 ft holes and catch them halfway down this time of year. Just not the right time I guess

Gigidy

Can you tell me anymore about your fishing on Leech last weekend? I am heading up there on Friday for the day in search of some perch and walleye? I was thinking of the snake pit flats, and the areas about Goose Island. Email me if you want.

[email protected]

Hit some action again this weekend on the crappies and panfish. They still seem to be sitting suspended off of the bottom, at least the aggressive ones, but from what I have noticed is that by changing up your jigging presentations and lures you seem to get more bites out of agression more than anything else. Yesterday I had alot of luck letting the jig fall close to the bottom and then snapping it up 6-12" then just a quiver of the bait after that really seemed to get the gills to want to attack the lure and chase. 17' of water has been the location of late, and most fish have been coming on vertical jig presentations rather than horizontal.

Been going out on gull and doing ok getting lots of perch and even enough jumbos for a meal for both of us.(guppy and myself)Going to make the most of this last weekend of walleye fishing heading back out on gull today. The walleyes have not been fast and furious but have been getting some each time out.took home 15 perch between 10" and 12" and three keeper eyes 15" last night. found that pinching the minnow head off right behide the gills worked best. so you have just a round ball of minnow head hooked on a small jigging spoon with a little larva on the other two hooks with subtle jigging and pause

I was out last night on Round looking for crappies. I put the wheel house out and my wife, daughter, and two friends came out for a night of cards and pizza. I was mainly just going to keep an eye on the vexilar all night to see if any suspended crappies cruised through. To my surprise, the walleye bite was steady all night. From 5:00-9:00. Slowly, but surely we had a rattle reel sound every half hour and the walleyes were good size. They were hittin the glow jigs. We didn't get one fish on plain hooks. And we were using crappie minnows and fat heads. Good Luck

Hit Gull on Friday and only managed a few bigger perch. Found some crappies and sunnies on some smaller lakes though. Wasn't able to find any eyes to close off the season but maybe a LOW trip may have to happen!

Fished a tough weekend for crappies. Could see a few of them coming through, but very few biters and small ones at that. I gave up and went sunny fishing this afternoon instead.

Boy was it nice out there though. I love days like today.

Looking to get out this spring for crappies. I've always had luck on the Mississippi above the dam in Brainerd. Anybody going to be out fishing Rice Lake? I'd imagine the ice would go out first since the Mississip goes through there. I know the Mississippi River is overlooked a lot with all the other lakes in the area. Sounds like Zorbaz/Bar Harbor/Nisswa is nuts in the spring

Was at Breezy and was still cold. Don't have the temp as I was shorebound but it was Friday in that wind. No fish though.

Finally caught them pretty good this weekend. Had great morning today fish where in 7-8 fow with some weeds caught them on a Northland slurpies tube and a mimic minnow small fry (This has been working as good if not better than a puddle jumper) The small fry is like a tiny 1 1/2" fluke on 32 oz head.

Nice Fish Swampbuck. Glad you got into them.

I finally made it out this weekend for a few hours. Caught quite a few in 5-7 fow as well. Water temp was 57-58 degrees where I was fishing. Main lake temp was around 53 degrees.

Ditto for us last night. Not as many though. We got out late and it took us about 20 minutes to find them. Nice bite once we did. Fun!

I've been out the last two weekends, two weeks ago, got a few decent ones, this last weekend we did better, more females had moved in but still in the deep part of the bay, fishing over 8ft about a foot and a half under the bobber. Couldn't catch anything but bass if we tried shallower. Water temps right around 57/58, so I don't think there going full boar yet, once the get going, its gonna be good!

Was out again last night fishing for the fun of it. We boated well over 100. Kept our limits and the rest went back. Had some really nice ones mixed in. This weather has really helped speed things up.

Was only able to make it out once for walleyes this weekend with my dad and bro. We ended up pulling cranks on Gull Friday night. Managed to catch 6. Caught them in 6 fow. Didn't get out on the lake until 10:30 pm and fished till 1:30 am. All of them were in the 13-16 inch category. Even though we only caught a few, it was still a great night to be out. The DNR checked us and told us that he was seeing very low numbers that particular night, but of the fish that were caught, most were caught on cranks.

Managed to pull a few walleyes outta WFC each day of the long weekend... Nothing huge but solid Whitefish walleyes as usual.. big fish went 26 and hit at about 3 am! That wakes you up! Haha! I still think the bite will keep getting better even though there is a ton of forage! I cant believe the bait balls Im graphing or the jumping minnows on the surface in the evenings.. no wonder the 'eyes are never hungry! :-/

Yeah, every evening I can I try to put at least a few hours in after the sun goes down... I give the day bite a try as well depending on the weather... a high sun and no wind.. Either bassin time or cruising time! Haha!

The first two weeks of the walleye season was a little un-eventful. But this last week we have seen a few signs of life here in the Brainerd area. We actually had one great report from Gull yesterday. One group of anglers reported landing 32 walleyes. Plus a few of the guides that have been hitting the water are reporting catching a few. The fish are grouping up in a few spots. Shallow depths have been better than deep. Most reports claim the walleyes are anywhere from up in the weeds out to about 20 feet. Fishing the weedlines in 13-18 feet is a good starting point now. The best tactics have varied and they all work. Spinners and nightcrawlers, live bait rigs and redtails, creek chubs, or leeches, and jigs tipped with Berkley Gulp Alive have all boated some fish. Gull, North Long, and Whitefish are the top destinations right close. Mille Lacs has been tremendous especially on the rocks in the evenings. 10-14 foot depths. Slip bobbers and a medium to large leech are catching lots of 13-17 inchers. The mud flast are kicking out bigger fish on live bait rigs with a long snell and a jumbo leech.

Bass fishing has been pretty good everywhere. Senkos, jigs, or topwater baits are working well. Pike fishing has been steady on Gull, Edwards, and clark lake. Spinner rigs and medium sucker minnows or big shiners are catching lots of average size fish. Crappies are starting to bite out on the weedlines in the evenings. Northland Mimic Minnows are a great choice for trolling or casting the 10-14 foot depths while chasing crappies. Sunfish are in the shallows and are easy targets with hair jigs tipped with leeches, wax worms, or Berkley Gulp maggots.

Good luck this week!

Looking to try North Long, Round or Gull this week. Was leaning towards North Long, but sounds like Gull is finally picking up? Looking to do some jigging perhaps, haven't live bait rigged much, but could learn to!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
